Character description

Preston Smith Brooks (1819-1857): South Carolina congressman from 1853 until his death in 1857. As a legislator, he was not notable, but in 1856, he attacked Senator Charles Sumner with his cane for Sumner's anti-Slavery speeches and Sumner's personal attack on Brooks's uncle A. P. Butler. This earned him the nickname "Bully" Brooks in the North but made him a hero in the South.
