Character description

Reginald Pole (1500–1558), son of Margaret, Countess of Salisbury and her husband Sir Richard Pole, was made a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church in 1536 and later served as the last Roman Catholic Archbishop of Canterbury. He broke with King Henry VIII over his desire for a divorce from Catherine of Aragon, and went into self-imposed exile in France and Italy until the accession of Queen Mary I.
