Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester (c. 1532/1533–1588) was a childhood friend of Queen Elizabeth I, and her constant companion and favorite after she came to the throne. He offended the queen by his marriage in about 1576 to Lettice Knollys, but they were later reconciled.
