Character description

Robert Emmett Rodes (1829-1864). A graduate of the Virginia Military Institute, he later taught there and worked as a civil engineer. He commanded the 5th Alabama regiment at 1st Bull Run. He became a brigadier that fall. Serving well at that post, he commanded a division at Chancellorsville (and, briefly, even commanded Jackson's corps). Made Major General thereafter, his performance at Gettysburg was considered less effective. He continued in division command until killed at Winchester in 1864.
