35th United States Secretary of War and later U.S. Ambassador to the UK. As the eldest son of Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd Lincoln, he was summoned to his father's deathbed, and later was present when both Presidents Garfield and McKinley were assassinated (as an eyewitness to Garfield's murder, in fact). (Allegedly he later refused an invitation to a presidential function because he himself noticed the coincidences.)
