Character description

Silver Jack: Character in the ballad of the same name, perhaps about one John "Silver Jack" Driscoll, who died in 1895. In the ballad, Silver Jack engages in "evangelism" by beating an atheist black and blue. The ballad never explains how this differs from religious terrorism, except perhaps for the fact that it is purported to work. It does not seem to have worked as well in real life; Driscoll was once imprisoned for assault.
