Character description

Simon Maccabee: The second of the five Maccabean brothers. The brothers and their father were responsible for starting the "Maccabean Revolt" that eventually removed Judah from Seleucid rule. After Simon's younger brothers Judas and Jonathan led the revolt in turn, Simon took over after the death of Jonathan in 142, becoming both High Priest and secular ruler of Judah. He was murdered in 134, but his son John Hyrcanus managed to succeed his father and become the true founder of the Maccabean dynasty.
