Character description

Tam Lin: Legendary character in the ballad "Tam Lin," which is #39 in Francis James Child's The English and Scottish Popular Ballads. Tam has been taken by the Queen of Elfland as a member of her company, and in time will be offered as an offering to Hell. In the meantime, he guards Carterhaugh, and can take a forfeit of those who come there. Janet comes to Carterhaugh, and Tam takes her virginity and makes her pregnant. On Hallow's Eve, at his advice, she offers to rescue him as the Elven queen prepares the sacrifice. Janet manages to hold fast to him even as the Queen passes Tam through bodily transformations. He is saved, and marries her.
