Collins dictionary of Scottish history by Ian Donnachie

Character description

1.) Thomas Johnston was the step-nephew of Abraham Lincoln, being the grandson of his step-mother, Sarah Bush Johnston Lincoln through the son of her first marriage, John Johnston. Thomas stole a rifle and a watch in separate incidents. Lincoln was able to resolve the matter with the plaintiffs, and
Thomas evaded punishment, other than the time he was held awaiting trial. Lincoln told him that he washed his hands of him if there were any more thefts. In The Case of Abraham Lincoln Fenster spells his surname as Johnson.
