Character description

William Bainbridge (1774-1833): American naval officer. One of the first officers in the reconstituted American navy of 1798, he was the first officer to surrender an American ship (to the French). In the war with the Barbary Pirates, he ran his ship Philadelphia aground. But, somehow, he was given command of the U. S. S. Constitution and succeeded in defeating the British Java before returning to shore duties.
