Character description

Secretary of State under Abraham Lincoln. Seward was the target of a murder attempt by Lewis Powell, a co-conspirator of Booth's, on the night of Lincoln's assassination; Seward, who was recovering from a carriage accident in which he had been badly hurt, was wounded by Powell but survived.  His son Frederick William Steward was an Assistant Secretary of State.  His son William Henry Jr. was a Civil War Brigadier General

Seward is perhaps best known for 'Seward's Folly', the purchase of Alaska by the USA.
