Character description

William David Porter (10 March 1809 - 1 May 1864), the son of Commodore David Porter, brother of Admiral David Dixon Porter, and foster brother of Admiral David Glasgow Farragut, entered the U.S. Navy on 1 January 1823. He remained in the Union navy, and in 1861 commanded the gunboat Essex (named in honor of his father's frigate of the same name).
