Character description

William Hull (1753-1825): American soldier and politician. He fought well in the Revolutionary War. Thomas Jefferson made him governor of Michigan Territory in 1805; he made many enemies among the Indians by his methods of gaining land. Made a brigadier general in the War of 1812, he was bluffed into surrendering Detroit by Isaac Brock. A court gave him a death sentence for this act, but stayed the sentence because of his past service.
