After Rooter saves her from a pair of dangerous thugs, Sophie begins to see the man behind the visage. Regardless of the past he brings with him, and the dangerous secrets she can tell he is hiding, Sophie believes Rooter is a good man—one who will protect her with his very life.

Swept into a passionate love affair, Sophie realizes that while Rooter isn’t as evil as everyone believes him to be, being with him isn’t as easy and perfect as she envisioned. When his ex “friend with benefits” refuses to stay out of their lives, she demands he take action. Rooter refuses to cut his ex-lover completely out of his life, and Sophie isn’t sure she can accept the status quo.

When the same ex makes the accusation of a brutal crime, Sophie and Rooter’s relationship is left reeling. Will they be able to come back from the edge of the precipice they find themselves on… or will their love end before they ever even have the chance to savor it?

Revenge-aroni by Eirik Gumeny (Jersey Devil Press)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by egumeny (author): The newest book in the EXPONENTIAL APOCALYPSE series is desperately in need of reviews. Please help if you can! I guarantee you probably won't regret it!

Description: Six months ago, Thor, the former Norse God of Thunder - along with the motley crew of political clones and cyborgs and psychic squirrels he calls his friends - saved the world. And, in a wholly unprecedented move, this time the world stayed saved.

The frozen head of Walt Sidney is not happy about that. Like, at all.

The bodiless businessman has pit his two top men against each other and sent them after the group, in a contest to see who can out-murder who. Because vengeance is a dish best served lukewarm and out of a can, heated over the smoldering remains of your enemies. Also, vengeance should be eaten with an officially licensed Lindsey Louse Spearin' Spork for maximum vengeance-ing.

The fourth book in the EXPONENTIAL APOCALYPSE series, REVENGE-ARONI is smart, vulgar, and quite simply and with absolutely zero hyperbole, the single best post-apocalyptic book about borderline inept, mercenary heroes you will ever read. Filled with gallows humor and inventive swearing and run-on sentences, as well as sex, drugs, violence, and blatant attacks on artisanal coffee, REVENGE-ARONI will surely be looked back on as the piece of literature that saved humanity from both itself and the inevitable uprising of homicidal crab-people.

High Voltage by Eirik Gumeny (Jersey Devil Press)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by egumeny (author): The newest book in the EXPONENTIAL APOCALYPSE series (REVENGE-ARONI) is now available, so I'm giving them all away! HIGH VOLTAGE is book 3.

Description: The world has ended twenty-six-and-a-half times to date... but that’s not about to stop it from trying again.

The sun, after a particularly debaucherous evening, has stumbled across the horizon and flipped a giant, geomagnetic middle finger at the Earth, detonating nearly every transformer and power line on the planet and crippling the single electrical grid that powers North America. The world has been plunged back into the Boring Ages overnight. Although this means very little to anyone, as no one is able to Google when the Boring Ages were or how society got out of them the first time.

With darkness looming, the economy crashing, and nobody’s DVRs working, everything seems lost — humanity is one more unmicrowaved Hot Pocket away from eating itself alive. So now it’s up to Thor, the former Norse God of Thunder, and the ragtag group of mercenary “heroes” he calls friends to set things right and hotwire the North American continent.

HIGH VOLTAGE, the third novel in the EXPONENTIAL APOCALYPSE series, is the perfect jumping on point for new readers. All of the fast-paced humor and snark of the first two critically-acclaimed, best-selling books and none of the having to read them first.

Witty and wired, HIGH VOLTAGE is the post-apocalyptic dark comedy for anyone who wishes THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY had more dick jokes or CLERKS had more homicidal old lady ghosts. And, you know, was a book.

Also please like me on Facebook or follow me on Twitter or Goodreads for updates and information about new material and promotions. Many thanks. Starbuck

Description: Named a 2012 Indie Reader Discovery Awards finalist (parenting) and a 2011 Foreword Reviews Book of the Year finalist (both humor and essay categories), How to Raise a Good Kid is not a conventional "how-to" but rather a collection of 23 humorous and heartfelt stories about the challenges and joys of growing up for both parents and children. By way of background, Good Kid is the first in a series of two books with its sequel, High School Dance, having just been released. The origin of the two books is as follows:

How to Raise a Good Kid and High School Dance are the culmination of a project that began shortly after my wife and I welcomed our son to the world. Like most first-time fathers, I felt a new and profound sense of responsibility and immediately became determined to pass along every lesson I believed was important. So even though my pride and joy was only drooling, pooping and sleeping at this point, and was years away from absorbing his dad’s hard-earned wisdom, I refused to let any of those pesky details get in my way.

First, I made a list of the events of my childhood that taught me the most, the ones that made the biggest impressions, both good and bad. This exercise forced me to revisit many harrowing experiences such as batting zero in little league baseball, my chronic addiction to a blanket, my disastrously unsuccessful try-out for the role of Winthrop in The Music Man, and the time I mooned the entire sixth grade. I wanted to let my son know whatever hardship he might face; his father had already been there, learned something of value and survived. I also wanted to let him know about all the fun and joy I experienced as a child and the love my parents showed me.

After compiling my list, however, I realized it wasn’t going to be enough. What if, God forbid, I wasn’t around to tell him the full story behind each enumerated item? I couldn’t bear the thought so I decided to turn the list into a book of stories about my childhood. Over time, the project evolved into two books: one about my grade school years, How to Raise a Good Kid, and one about my junior and senior high school years, High School Dance.

Few times in life are more memorable than our school years. Humiliation, heartbreak and failure are abundant, and that’s on a good day. No matter who you are, coming of age is exciting, confusing and sometimes downright dangerous, and I’ve tried to capture both the agony and the ecstasy. My wife and I were fortunate enough to add a daughter to our family in the intervening years and my great hope is that she and her brother will someday read these stories, learn a few lessons, come to know their father even better, and above all, remember how much I love them.

Offered by VelvetMorningPress (author): Enter to win a free ecopy of Perfect Mishap! I hope you enjoy the book, and would appreciate if you could leave a review on Amazon after reading. Good luck, and happy reading! (Available formats: epub, mobi, and pdf)

Description: A hilarious and honest British mom’s madcap adventures in suburbia, from Amazon UK bestselling author Aimee Horton!
Dottie Harris has a knack for stumbling into chaotic situations, gin & tonic in hand. When Dottie and Henry Harris move to their new house, Dottie’s only desire is to make friends in the neighbourhood. But Dottie, just home from delivering her third child, is struggling to adjust to village life. Recently promoted Henry travels a lot, and the neighbours aren’t very welcoming (although that could be because when Dottie first met them, she had dyed her children green).

So when Dottie accidentally hears her neighbours’ conversations over her baby monitor, she can’t help but use the sneaky information in her quest to build new friendships.
Of course, eavesdropping never ends well, and when Dottie discovers that two of her neighbours are having an affair, she’s horrified. Worse still, the locals are convinced she’s the one who’s doing the cheating. It’s up to Dottie to clear her name and uncover (and expose) the real cheat—in her signature haphazard way!
A humorous blend between chick lit and cozy mystery, this funny novel will have you laughing along with gin-drinking amateur sleuth Dottie!

Description: Two women are about to expose a terrible secret that will turn their world upside down.

For centuries the great river known as the Water Road separated the Altrerians in the north from the Neldathi in the south. For more than a hundred years after, the Triumvirate kept the Neldathi barbarians at bay, fighting amongst themselves across the Water Road.

Antrey is a woman without a country, the daughter of a Neldathi mother and an Altrerian father. She’s found a role for herself in Tolenor, the headquarters of the Triumvirate, that's given her access to a secret the alliance has kept for generations. When she finds it, she explodes with rage and embarks on a quest to find justice for the Neldathi people.

Strefer is a reporter without a story, desperately working the streets of Tolenor for any kind of lead. Ned by Linie Sherrod and Daniel Kelley

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by LeaDeLinkley (author): Enjoy!

Description: Imagine… a friend and neighbor, affable but mysterious, easygoing yet also strangely intense when it comes to a personal life kept as close to the vest as possible. Who doesn’t know someone like this? Mike and Janie Howell, residents of the bucolic town of Fielding, certainly do. Ned is their friend, dropped into their lives with a bit of lucky timing, swiftly becoming a fixture at their house, along with his excitable Daschund, Rocky.

But who is Ned? And why are so many of his characteristics eerily familiar to the Howells?

These are the questions posed and answered – to the extent that questions like these CAN be satisfactorily answered – in “Ned”, a 7,700-word short story that explores the impossible. From the creative minds of both Linie Sherrod and Daniel Kelley, “Ned” takes a brief stroll into a magical world where things are most definitely not as simple as they appear. Enter this world, and savor a tale of what could happen to anyone. Anyone, that is, who chooses to believe in beauty, in fate, in the delicious illogicality that defies the rational mind, but enchants those willing to open their eyes to the alluring power of possibility.

Revenge by P.G. Thomas (P.G. Thomas)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by p.g.thomas (author): Any and all reviews would be greatly appreciated.
Subsequent books will be available upon request.

Description: Your children kidnapped—a parent’s worst horror!
Unless you saw them disappear into the portal—then it becomes a nightmare!
You can’t tell the police—as they will never believe you, nobody will.
So what do you do? You pray! And that is what Lauren did after her arrest.

With insufficient evidence and released from jail, those who would believe her gather to provide support: her husband Ryan, her brother Logan, and friends Eric and John, who had all returned from the magical lands of Calicon four years earlier. The place she desperately needed to get back to—because that was where her triplets were presently located.

Just as the abduction had been unanticipated, so was their exit from this world, which also caught Steve, the arresting detective, by surprise. Once in the enchanted lands, greeted by Mirtza, a new plague of mysteries waits for them, but so do magic, friends, and allies. Then, in a land filled with surprises so amazing, it will yield the greatest one yet, and the promise of hope.

Can they formulate a plan to push back the shadows: to find the triplets, to win the day? What happens when the evil unleashed is great, and it has a plan—a better plan? What happens when chaos threatens to birth horrors unimaginable? This fast-paced, suspenseful epic is filled with twists and turns that will both surprise and entertain you like no book before.

Selective comments from my beta readers:
• “This volume is much improved (your good writing is becoming great). I feel the characters evolved from the earlier volumes in a logical progression.”
• “The new characters were great additions and provided a good contrast and at times a foil to the heroes. Challenging, questioning and driving the plot forward. ”
• “Book was well paced - I liked the build up at the end. ”
• “Great sequel - I think your writing is developing well. Your POV is better and the characters are able to have complex discussion without the reader losing the plot line. ”
• “The plot is unique and draws the reader in. ”
• “Overall great book - thanks for letting me read it. ”
• “This book was a "Wow!" for most of it. Thank you. ”
• “Yes. All the characters stayed true to what I knew and what I expected. ”
• “…I laughed and was saddened several times…”
• “Yes, you made the end chapters intense. So much so that I forgot this was a beta book and went to Amazon to see if there was a second book. During the end chapters my husband had to get up in the middle of the night to ask if I planned to go to bed. I told him that I'd wait to finish the book. ”

My Psychic War with Uncle Sam by E. Alexander Scianna (Harmonious Circle Press)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by alecazandre (publisher): E-book edition (.epub or .mobi) of our timely underground literary fiction novel My Psychic War with Uncle Sam.

We’d appreciate your sincere LT book-review, and if possible on Barnes & Noble (http://goo.gl/x1CnT) or Amazon (http://goo.gl/Z2rKw).

Regards,
Harmonious Circle Press
http://theharmoniouscirclepress.net

Description: An intellectual coming of age, My Psychic War with Uncle Sam swings from life on the military base with G.I. Joes in starched fatigues to the streets of Seattle where Dennis and Marcel encounter the hippie culture seeking nirvana on hallucinogenic drugs. The reader is taken on an exhilarating romp through western thought and history as the ideological struggles that permeated the 60’s generation are juxtaposed with the uncertainties of modern day life. With heavy doses of mysticism, drama, and humor—just to keep things interesting—the authors ask, “Who is Uncle Sam?”

Dennis DeLuccio invites the reader into his underground garden to rethink politics, war, sex, drugs, philosophy, religion, the occult, the origin of the hippie movement, and the meaning of a psychic war. Dennis drifts back to 1968 and his first assignment at Fort Lewis, Washington. He remembers Marcel Dreyfus, a young soldier who has just returned from a tour of duty in Vietnam. The many GI’s who say they don’t believe in the war, yet stand at attention, fall silent and follow orders even as they are shipped out to Nam, mystified Dennis. Marcel however cuts through the illusions of the so-called patriots with wit and rhetoric.

Packed with documented facts of U.S. foreign policy, paraphrased from the works of Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, Bertrand Russell and others, as well as broadcast news reports of the period, My Psychic War with Uncle Sam infuses social comment with lived experience. Like Joseph Heller’s Catch-22, it fashions the account of a young army recruit living stateside through the Vietnam era into an eloquent and deeply funny plea against butchery in the service of authority. My Psychic War with Uncle Sam weaves historical fact and dramatic fiction into an essential storybook of our times that is both entertaining and enlightening.

“What a surprise! This is an exuberant romp through history, politics, and philosophy, through the eyes of a modern Alice in Wonderland. Escaping down a hole in his living room floor, Dennis seeks refuge from the horrors of 9-11 in his secret garden only to confront madness and paranoia, as he tends his garden and searches for an understanding of his experiences in the army during the Viet Nam era. The novel will keep you wondering what supposed masters of truth can be trusted to guide Dennis home in his psychic war with Uncle Sam?”
—Cynthia McKinney, U.S. Congresswoman and 2008 Green Party U.S. Presidential Nominee

“A dramatic account of one man’s psychic and political struggle against the cant and crimes of establishment institutions. Written with engaging candor and much human spirit.”
—Michael Parenti, author of Contrary Notions and God and His Demons

My Psychic War with Uncle Sam is earning mostly 4- and 5-star reviews on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, LibraryThing, and Goodreads. Here are some links relevant to the novel and its authors:

Doctor Gillespie's Discovery by J. R. Duke (Smashwords)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by JRDuke (author): I'm giving away copies of my book Doctor Gillespie's Discovery and in return would appreciate honest reviews if you win one. Winners will receive a copy in the file of their choice (available files: mobi, epub, and PDF). Please leave reviews on Amazon (preferred), Barnes & Nobel, Goodreads, or LibraryThing. I can only hope that you enjoy reading my book as much as I enjoyed writing it. I call it tongue-in-cheek science fiction (a genre I may have invented!), but it has a serious timely message. It was my attempt at sending the pendulum of conventional 'wisdom' in the opposite direction which I felt was long overdue. I welcome any and all comments or feedback. Thank you for your interest! J. R.

Description: Research scientist Doctor Gillespie has made one of the most momentous discoveries about our existence: that there is a biological basis for sexual orientation, a longtime controversial theory proven by the doctor to be factual, which means we actually are born to be the way we are.

Doctor Gillespie's discovery triggers predictable outrage from skeptics, some of whom privately intend to have it discredited and suppressed at any cost including silencing the doctor through assassination.

The unacknowledged leader of this criminal opposition to the discovered truth is perhaps the biggest homophobe in the world, a prominent conservative religious-political activist holding the public's ear captive with a round-the-clock televangelism talk show who uses his media empire to manipulate his massive audience into sharing his beliefs.

Is he powerful enough to undermine the truth about who we really are?

Description: Synopsis:
Asher Hearst is a college student, and the closest thing he’s got to a superpower is his ability to take a punch. Basically all he has going for him is an edgy sense of humor— and, of course, that he can't die.

As a small-time fixer, he's about to field a job request best left to the pros, because once he gets involved with witches and the supernatural, there's no turning back.

While Asher becomes immersed in the secret world of the supernatural, he makes few allies and some very powerful enemies. At least traveling across space and time will bring him some unexpected romance, right?

Immortal: Curse of the Deathless is a humorous, action-filled story with gritty, sometimes horror-inspiring elements. Over its three parts, the book spans multiple worlds: a modern, urban city of the 21st Century, as well as Tír na nÓg, a land that's home to the Fae (Sídthe) from classic Celtic Mythology.

Description: We stand there, screaming into each other’s faces.
How I hate him.
How I’ve loved him.
How I want him destroyed.

After a year of preparation, eighteen year old Raven Smith has planned out every detail of her summer vacation in Europe. Yet, while still en-route to Italy, Raven finds a letter in her carry-on suitcase that tells her not to go to Europe, that an “evil agent of Hell” is looking for her and he will find her if she disregards the letter’s message.

Deciding that it was a product of insanity, Raven chooses to disregard the letter's message.

In her cross-Europe trip, Raven only wants to feed her love of art history and spend time with her older sister. She’s unprepared for Andras and his strange fascination with her, not to mention the all-consuming attraction she has for him. She’s definitely unprepared for Nicholas and his brothers Stephen, Albert and Tobias, diverting all of her plans and sweeping her off to a Swedish Castle.

The Lie Spinners (The Deception Dance, Book 2) by Rita Stradling (Rita Stradling)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by Ritastradling (author): Giving away 100 review copies. New cover version.

Description: Andras is coming back for me. That is pretty much the only certainty I have in this life. Andras will always come back for me...

Last summer, with the help of demon-killer Stephen Tapper, Raven Smith faced Hell on Earth to stop the demon-apocalypse (or more like, put it on hold). Raven made a deal with the Grand Marquis of Hell: he would not open the gates of hell if she promised not to fall in love with anyone until he returned for her.

Almost a year has passed and summer has come again…

Raven is safe. Relatively. She’s protected. Doggedly. She’s away from the demons, the hell, the madness. Until she falls asleep.

When the earth-witch Madeline shows up in Raven’s hometown (aka her prison), calling in Raven’s life-debt, Raven shouldn’t even listen to Madeline’s proposal. But she does.

Madeline tells her that months ago, Stephen travelled to Thailand to track down a magician called The Spider; but within days of arriving, Stephen vanished. Every person (be they witch or demon-killer) Madeline sent to find Stephen was hunted down, overwhelmed and murdered by demons. The message Madeline received after all attempts failed was clear: send in Raven Smith or Stephen dies.

Going to Thailand might possibly be the stupidest decision Raven could ever make… there are a thousand reasons why Raven should stay guarded, protected, safe; only one reason why she shouldn’t.

Stephen.

Days of Darkness by C. D. Verhoff (Misty Moon Media)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Offered by CDVerhoff (author): Available in MOBI, EPUB or PDF. Please leave a review on Amazon and/or your favorite book review place in return.

Description: Apocalyptic Christian Fiction

The Illumination of Conscience and the Three Days of Darkness have been spoken of by the prophets and alluded to in the bible, but the average Christian has never heard of them. Those that have often dismiss them as too strange or too Catholic to take seriously. If you would like to know more about these mysterious events, and how they might play out in the near future, this fictional account was written especially for you. Told through the eyes of a worldly 21-year-old college student, Days of Darkness brings you to the edge of the Apocalypse.

Gina Applegate is a business major with a small band of internet followers. She creates video documentaries about what it’s like to come of age at a time of political upheaval, natural disasters and escalating violence. God doesn’t play much of a role in her life. Nonetheless, Gina thinks she’s a pretty good person—that is, until the Illumination of Conscience shows her the state of her soul. What she believed about herself, and the God of Creation, doesn’t line up with the frightening experience, shaking her faith. As the line between Good and Evil sharpens, Gina must choose a side before there’s no middle ground left to stand on. Recommended for ages 16 and up.

A Compendium For The broken Hearted by Meredith Miller

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by Meredith.Miller (author): This Giveaway is aimed towards getting reviews and attention. Please feel free to post reviews here, because every one helps, even if it isn't a perfect 5/5:

https://www.librarything.com/work/1736...

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/28...

https://www.amazon.com/Compendium-Brok...

Description: Twenty stories are meant to make you, in turn, very sad and very happy. There are about ten themes which are discussed in the book in both Breaks, which try to capture the instant a person's heart breaks, as well as Hearts, which are much sweeter in nature and evoke positive feelings. The final result, of course, is meant to be a bittersweet feeling.

These stories, both Breaks (sad) and Hearts (happy), talk about a number of themes including parenthood, brotherhood, friendship, betrayal, addiction as well as few more. There are about ten in total, discussed in twenty stories. Of course, the main audience is meant to be anyone who feels broken hearted, but it came to my attention that anybody could read this book, provided that they are mature and are willing to read some quite sad things. This is where the idea of Breaks and Hearts arose, out of a deeper need to create a relatable book to as many people as possible.

Besides, I cannot claim to be able to heal depression through short stories, no matter how much I wish to do it.

This is why I shifted the book's attention to emotion, even a roller coaster of them. Still, deep inside, I want to help.

First Contract: A JJ Stoner short story by Frank Westworth (The Cosmic Bike Company Ltd)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by FrankWestworth (author): First Contract has been a big hit with fans of Lee Child and Stephen Leather, and has attracted a stack of 4* and 5* reviews on Amazon UK. It would be great to reach new readers and introduce them to JJ Stoner - and this is, in effect, his 'secret origin' story so it's an ideal place to start.
Hopefully you'll enjoy and it and help to spread the word - and feedback is always welcome.

Description: An action-packed ebook featuring covert operative JJ Stoner, who uses sharp blades and blunt instruments to discreetly solve problems for the UK government.

A decade ago, JJ Stoner was a soldier. He killed people for a living and made no bones about it. On a scorching day in the Iraqi desert, when British blood stained the sand, he over-stepped the mark. Men died in compromising circumstances; too many men for an easy explanation. Faced with a dishonourable discharge and accusations of murder, Stoner accepted an offer from a stranger who represented an intelligence agency. Suddenly, Stoner found himself half a world away and about to execute his first private contract…

FIRST CONTRACT, a quick thriller, introduces the central character from the JJ Stoner / Killing Sisters series. You don’t need to have read any of the other stories in the series: you can start right here if you like.

As well as a complete, stand-alone story, First Contract includes an excerpt from ‘A Last Act of Charity’ and a sneak preview of the sequel, ‘The Corruption of Chastity.’

Please note that FIRST CONTRACT is intended for an adult audience and contains explicit scenes of a sexual and/or violent nature.

Feedback from reviewers for the Killing Sisters / Stoner stories:

‘Gritty story-telling at its best, with graphic (but well-written) sex and a plot that fires from the hip.’

‘It launches you straight into the mayhem and, like its protagonist, JJ Stoner, takes no prisoners.’

‘A fast-paced, high-powered thriller… Terse and stiletto streamlined and sharp as the blade of a knife.’

‘Sharp. Staccato. Smart. Lovers of long, luxurious, lyrical prose should read this to see how the other half writes.’

‘The tightly-written prose has more than a touch of the Elmore Leonard about it – sparse, sharp and often witty as well.’

‘There is hardly time to draw breath in this fast-moving adventure introducing a frighteningly capable executioner.’

‘A punchy and compelling tale of an ice-cold assassin, more nuanced than your average hired killer. The writing is sparse and crisp, the dialogue frequently laced with sardonic British edge.’

‘Clever dialogue and plenty of descriptive narrative providing context for the violence, depth to the characters and shape to the story.’

‘Our first meeting with JJ Stoner does nothing for the man’s chances of being nominated for any awards for unbridled compassion or for turning the other cheek.’

‘A brilliant read, along the lines of Jack Reacher.’

‘The dialogue is snappy, the characters are sharply developed, and the plot moves effortlessly forward.’

‘Intelligently written, with excellent characterisation, sharp wit and punchy back-n-forth dialogue.’

‘The author makes no apologies for Stoner's pragmatic attitude towards the elimination of his targets, and the result is a solid, well thought through action thriller, intelligently handled.’

‘Sophisticated story-telling, written in a mature style, and targeted at a mature audience.’

‘The novelette has a terse, spare style and winds the reader in – definitely a page-turner. Move over Ian Fleming, JJ Stoner could replace James Bond…’

‘There are some sequences which are as satisfyingly testosterone-soaked as any Jack Reacher adventure, and then some which are as bleakly subtle as über-nuanced Japanese noir. For every alpha male with a gun and a hard-on, there’s an equal, often opposing feminine force: frequently just as effective and half as smart again.’

Description: This is the seventh book in the illustrated historical series, The Wurtherington Diary. This is a stand-a-lone story and is part two of the real-life adventures Tammy had with Buffalo Bill Cody. Of course she is in good company with Alfred the mouse, Zeke the orphaned opossum, Cedric, the mischievous mongoose, and Polly, the goodhearted bird. This part of Tammy's diary takes place about nine years later when Wild Bill Hickok and Buffalo Bill were friends.
As with all the Wurtherington Diary books, this one abounds in developing worthwhile feelings for its young readers. Things like honesty, compassion, and respect for others abound on very page. For example, Tammy sees that the extinction of the Indians in an alternate space-time continuum has little effect on her life in Ohio; however quickly decides to set things straight. Of course, she never gives it a second thought.
Tammy discovers that her new mission to nudge the space-time continuum is to bring Ned Buntline, a down-on-his-luck writer, and Buffalo Bill together. It is hoped that Ned Buntline will write his famous dime novel, Buffalo Bill, the King of the Border Men, which was instrumental in romanticizing the West and eventually saving  the American Indians from extinction.
At Fort McPherson Tammy brings Hickok, Cody, and Ned Buntline together for the first time.
Then, she takes the reader off in a new direction in her quest to save the Indians. She soon finds herself and her delightful companions in Washington D.C. talking to slave rights leaders and eventually President Grant. She explains that the Indians had been overlooked during the civil war and that it is time to set the West in a new direction. Up until Tammy appeared, the nation had set upon a course of "Indian removal" in order to solve the "Indian problem".
For her most difficult task, she must find a way to bring the Apache nation and Cochise to the peace table. She and her little critter friends find that they must save Buffalo Bill Cody and Wild Bill Hickok from certain death as they attempt to deliver mail across Apache lands. She meets postmaster Tom Jeffords of Tombstone who seems to need a nudge to become a hero and then sets up the historical peace treaty that became legend.
In the final chapter Tammy sets out with Aunt May, Lord Wixby and Mark to see Buffalo Bill's Wild West. This is the show that toured the world for decades and changed the way the world felt about the American Indians. Buffalo Bill, Ned Buntline, and Tammy loved the Indians, and you will too by the time you turn to the last page.

The Lynchman's Owl by B.Y. Yan

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by BYYan (author): The Lynchman’s Owl is a series of stand-alone short stories concerning the adventures of the titular masked hero in the twilight of his career. The serial is updated monthly with a collections compendium every 5 issues, with each episode contributing to the overarching story, the firsts of which has been presented here for your enjoyment. A review posted to Amazon when you are finished would not go unappreciated. Mobi or PDF will be provided for those who sign up.

Description: “To hear a hoot in the hour before dawn is to mean enduring ill-fortunes and worse woes still for the listener, especially if you’ve got something to hide. Here in these parts we call him the Lynchman’s Owl, and this is his call.”

20 years ago the Lynchman’s Owl disappeared. Hero, villain, monster, fiend—it is undeniable the lingering effects the mysterious creature has left on the beleaguered nation, long since at odds with its own downtrodden, oppressed people.

20 years later, someone has come looking, and his identity will be at last revealed…

Includes Issues 1-5 - the Complete Origins of the Lynchman's Owl

Issue #1: A Lynchman’s Owl

Bailey of the Golden Brocade wants one thing and one thing only: the Lynchman’s Owl of 20 years ago revealed, or undeniable proof of his existence. And whether diving headlong into battles with hardened criminal societies, uncovering the secrets of well-meaning revolutionaries, or butting heads with masked vigilantes, he will stop at nothing to get the answer he needs.

But there is nothing which guarantees that the success so desired by the royal detective will be the same one he receives, or wants; and when you are obsessed with chasing down legends, there is equal chance that the legend of yesterday will come looking for you…

Issue #2: Legend of the Hour

Never say never…

The investigation continues for Bailey, and there are enough promising leads to make a game of it. In the least likely of places there are answers to be found about the Lynchman’s Owl, but it is in the long history of the legend that its true face might at last be glimpsed.

Issue #3: Death of the Owl

The legend has fallen.

In the last moments the monster has come out of hiding, and a madman’s quest has brought about the wrath of the Lynchman’s Owl—the harbinger of grief and tragedy for all involved.

Issue #4: Ibbu Harold Bailey

Who is Ibbu Harold Bailey?

The dust has settled. The Owl is dead. But the man behind his destruction harbors secrets of his own close to his heart, and the answers, when they are revealed by those with an active interest in preserving the legend, will shake the nation to its very roots.

Issue #5: The Owl Returns

War!

It is in the twilight of the nation itself that it will find its very survival and the livelihoods of its citizens in the hands of the legend of decades past, and an odd couple who might engineer the return of the Lynchman’s Owl in order to ensure the legacy of their bloodline might endure, and their people prevail.

This is a collection of stories where impressionable boys and lovers, fathers and mothers, priests, con-men and angels come alive; stories of people and moments to care for and recognise. Told with compassion and care, these are tales of living and dying from an author who hopes you will bring them to life by knowing the people within. Description: Trailer: http://youtu.be/2VfYxsHNlhc

This is the story of a lonely kid who develops a computer game, using what little of quantum physics that he has read, that renders game levels from maps of any format; the result is just a little too realistic. When he tries to combine this "World of Shawn" with a favorite game of his childhood, "World of One," he soon finds Worlds colliding, to the detriment of his friends. Shawn must step up and rectify things, rescue the princess and save the World.

The interaction and constant dialogue between the characters in this story, as well as the humor and action intertwined, have drawn comparison to that in such works as "The Lord of the Rings," "Harry Potter," and "Narnia," so if a reader has an interest in any of those, as well as an interest in computer programming or video games, either in the past or the present, it would be a safe bet that they would enjoy getting to know Shawn and his World!

Seven Days till Sundown by Jaret Martens (Jaret Martens)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by Jaret_Martens (author): My name is Jaret Martens, and I am the author of this book. I am giving away my book Seven Days till Sundown in hopes of giving back to a community that has been nothing but supportive.

This book took three years to write while battling with crippling anxiety and depression. I wrote this as a representation of how encompassing mental illness can be, though it is by no means autobiographical.

Description: The world is dying.

Days stretch on, nights never end, and any glimpse of the sun is likely to be your last. As the world ends, Anya and her family travel toward the coast in an attempt to stay within the sunset’s glow, for if they fall behind, the elements are likely to kill them . . . if they don’t get themselves killed first.

Caught between cities, their struggle becomes more dire as a crooked-grinned wanderer named Cecil robs them blind. But they're both travelling the same road, and Anya's got a gun just itching to be used, provided her father doesn't give her a reason to use it first.

After all, what's a little death among friends?

Description: Fathers is an inspiring and highly emotive collection of poems spanning 40 years. Fatherhood is the inspiration for much of this book – its mysteries, triumphs, magic, humor, pain, and loss. In it the poet – an acute observer and lyrical writer – explores fatherhood from the perspective of a grandson, son, father, husband, and grandfather. His poems illustrate that being a dad is perhaps the most rewarding aspect of living, and at times, one of the most frustrating. The pages of this remarkable volume will engage all that is human in the reader.

The Scottish Movie by Paul Collis (Paul Collis)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by paulcollis (author): If you're into Shakespeare and Hollywood, this Giveaway is for you. Like the vast majority of Indie authors, I don't expect to make a penny by writing. Instead, I'll count readers' reviews as reward enough, especially if they're as encouraging as they have been so far. Good luck.

Description: Harry Greenville, a young actor and part-time writer struggling to make a living in modern Los Angeles, writes a novel about Shakespeare. ‘It’s 1606 and the Bard needs a new play for King James, who is notoriously hard to please. As history tells us, he comes up with 'Macbeth'. But the rehearsals are dogged by illnesses and accidents, the royal premiere gets the royal thumbs down, and the actors consider the play to be more than unlucky; they believe it’s cursed. The question is: Why?’

Harry’s novel offers an intriguing answer: Shakespeare stole it, and the real author sabotaged the production.

He posts the first draft on a website in the hope that a Hollywood agent will discover it. Eventually, when someone in the movie business does discover it, life mirrors art; they steal it.

With the help of his girlfriend and a few under-employed pals, Harry sets out to find the culprit. The trail leads him to the core of the mighty Galactic Studios, where his decision to act like the vengeful playwright in his purloined novel evolves into a truly Shakespearean tale of theft, revenge and just desserts.

Description: A quiet little mountain town is hiding a big problem. When the townsfolk of Raven's Peak start acting crazy, Abigail Dressler is called upon to find out what is happening. She uncovers a demonic threat unlike any she's ever faced and finds herself in a fight just to stay alive.

She rescues Haatim Arison from a terrifying fate and discovers that he has a family legacy in the supernatural that he knows nothing about. Now she's forced to protect him, which is easy, and also trust him if she wants to save the townsfolk of Raven's Peak. Trust, however, is considerably more difficult for someone who grew up living on the knife's edge of danger.

Can they discover the cause of the town's insanity and put a stop to it before it is too late?

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by leonardflama (author): To write about anything is to write about what is happening around one, and that is reflected in the people one has encountered in life.

Description: To write about anything is to write about what is happening around one, and that is reflected in the people one has encountered in life. Some are good, some bad, and any of them could claim the status of a celebrity - whether that status is deserved or not. The author has drawn on the experiences of friends and acquaintances and his interaction with them to reveal human nature. These 'others' do not claim celebrity status but their lives are real, and the observer is left to draw his own conclusion as to the merits of those lives. The central character, Aesop Fitzgerald, is a young lawyer on his own voyage of discovery as he tries to link those characters in resonance with the morals of Aesop's Fables. He possesses a mentor who influences the soul, and never gives up in his efforts to achieve a justifiable existence in society.

Managing Bubbie by Russel Lazega (CreateSpace)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by rlazega (author): Enter for your chance to win Managing Bubbie -- the award winning memoir on its way to becoming a movie. Look for the upcoming star-studded audiobook (June 2016) starring Tony Award Winner Linda Lavin ("Alice"), Lainie Kazan ("My Big Fat Greek Wedding"), Grammy-nominated comic Judy Tenuta, Jj Crowne ("Graceland") and more.

Description: Your chance to win Managing Bubbie — the award winning memoir on its way to becoming a movie. Upcoming audiobook will star Tony Award Winner Linda Lavin, Lainie Kazan & Judy Tenuta.

Description: Her devoted family only wants the best for their Bubbie. Mostly they want to ensure that their matriarch’s twilight years are spent in comfort, safety, and serenity. But how do you manage an aging, immutably stubborn Holocaust survivor who has risen above the squalor of Poland’s ghettos; fled across the war-torn German wilderness; and survived the winter-ravaged Pyrenees alone on foot with three children? You probably don't.

Managing Bubbie is the heartrending, hilarious family memoir by Russel Lazega that recounts the frequently hectic, ever-exhausting trials of one Jewish family in Miami Beach as they try to oversee the care of the elderly, unmanageable Lea Lazega. As they scramble for an acceptable assisted living facility and struggle to get her medication in line, they discover the difficulties of controlling a woman who time and again eluded catastrophe by refusing to be told what to do.

A tapestry of an American family in the 1980s, Managing Bubbie also revisits the Holocaust period to mine the love, hope, and humor that emerged from the deepest despair. Anyone who savors a soft heart with a sharp funny bone will laugh, cry, and commiserate with the confounded family who must manage their beloved Bubbie.

Dangerous Dreams by Mike Rhynard (CreateSpace)

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by mikerhy (author): Giveaway by author

Description:
DANGEROUS DREAMS

" . . . if I'd known what lay ahead, I would never have slept again."

Four hundred twenty-five years ago, the "Lost Colony of Roanoke" became the most vexing and enduring mystery in American history-a mystery that lives on today. Dangerous Dreams is the story of what might have happened to the Colony; told in the personal, exciting, terrifying manner in which it surely occurred.

On July 23, 1587, England established its first permanent North American settlement on Roanoke Island in present day North Carolina. Barely a month later, the colony's deteriorating circumstances forced Governor John White to return to England for additional supplies and colonists. However, war with Spain preempted his return until 1590, when upon his arrival, he discovered the colony had vanished.

The Lost Colony's saga mysteriously unfolds through the lifelike dreams of a young twenty-first century woman, Allie O'Shay, who after her dreams continue like a TV mini-series, night after night, deduces she's dreaming the gripping drama of the Lost Colony. But Allie's dreams do far more than witness history—-they entwine her with a young colonist named Emily Colman with whom she develops a strange, compelling emotional intimacy.

Emily and the colonists begin their struggle for survival against mounting adversity—-internal dissent erupts; multiple suitors seek Emily's favor, the powerful Powhatan chiefdom plans the colony's demise, and four warriors from a tribe to the distant north arrive to trade with tribes near the colony. The subplots converge amidst the excruciating drama of the colony's waning fortunes, and Emily faces terrifying perils that ultimately force her to make an agonizing, fateful decision.

Increasingly distraught, Allie follows the Lost Colony and Emily as they march inexorably toward their destinies. Desperate to understand the genesis and verity of her dreams, she probes the depths of modern dream science to fashion a theoretical explanation. But as the colony's prospects dim, she discovers there may be far more to her bond with the Lost Colony and Emily Colman than she could ever have imagined; and as her emotional fusion with Emily surges, she faces a dire challenge that threatens her own survival.

Dangerous Dreams is for readers who savor gut-wrenching suspense; intense, fast paced action; layered mystery; compelling love and hate; a deep plot; and emotional immersion in their characters. Mike Rhynard inexorably draws readers into a tempest of gripping suspense, underpinned by a masterful blend of historical accounts, old and new theories, and creative story telling about the Lost Colony-all through the lens of mind-bending dream science hypotheses that, at once, entice and dare readers to venture into Allie O'Shay's Dangerous Dreams. A must read for historical fiction and Romance readers.

Limping Through Life by Jerry Apps (Wisconsin Historical Society Press)

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by whspress (publisher): Jerry Apps has been a rural historian and environmental writer for more than forty years. He has published fiction and nonfiction books on many rural topics, including "Ringlingville USA," , "Horse-Drawn Days," Old Farm, and "Garden Wisdom" for the Wisconsin Historical Society Press. He is a former county extension agent and professor at the University of Wisconsin College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Jerry and his wife, Ruth, divide their time between their home in Madison and their farm, Roshara, west of Wild Rose.

Description: Polio was epidemic in the United States in 1916. By the 1930s, quarantines and school closings were becoming common, as isolation was one of the only ways to fight the disease. The Salk vaccine was not available until 1955; in that year, Wisconsin's Fox River valley had more polio cases per capita than anywhere in the United States. In his most personal book, Jerry Apps, who contracted polio at age 12, reveals how the disease affected him physically and emotionally, profoundly influencing his education, military service, and family life and setting him on the path to becoming a professional writer.

A hardworking farm kid who loved to play softball, young Jerry Apps would have to make many adjustments and meet many challenges after that winter night he was stricken with a debilitating, sometimes fatal illness. In "Limping Through Life" he explores the ways his world changed after polio and pays tribute to those family members, teachers, and friends who helped along the way.

Seventh Generation Earth Ethics by Patty Loew (Wisconsin Historical Society Press)

Offered by whspress (publisher): The Native people whose lives are depicted in Seventh Generation Earth Ethics understood the cultural gravity that kept their people rooted to their ancestral lands and acted in ways that ensured the growth and success of future generations. In this way they honor the Seventh Generation philosophy, which cautions decision makers to consider how their actions will affect seven generations in the future--some 240 years.

Description: Wisconsin's rich tradition of sustainability rightfully includes its First Americans, who along with Aldo Leopold, John Muir, and Gaylord Nelson shaped its landscape and informed its "earth ethics." This collection of Native biographies, one from each of the twelve Indian nations of Wisconsin, introduces the reader to some of the most important figures in Native sustainability: from anti-mining activists like Walt Bresette (Red Cliff Ojibwe) and Hillary Waukau (Menominee) to treaty rights advocates like James Schlender (Lac Courte Oreille Ojibwe), artists like Truman Lowe (Ho-Chunk), and educators like Dorothy "Dot" Davids (Stockbridge-Munsee Community Band of Mohican Indians), along with tribal genealogists, land stewards, and preservers of language and culture. Each of the biographies speaks to traditional ecological values and cultural sensibilities, highlighting men and women who helped to sustain and nurture their nations in the past and present.

Blue Men and River Monsters: Folklore of the North by John Zimm (Wisconsin Historical Society Press)

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by whspress (publisher): "This book...is a treasure chest for those intrigued by folklore...this volume is an invaluable way to hold onto our communal past so it does not become part of those 'days that are forgotten.'" -Konnie LeMay, Editor, Lake Superior Magazine

"Eighty years ago, in the middle of the Great Depression, the U.S. government put Wisconsin writers and artists to work with an epic project, the results of which remained rolled up on microfilm in the Library of Congress for decades. Now John Zimm, an editor at the Wisconsin Historical Society Press, has culled through those rolls and compiled what he found into a book… Kudos to John Zimm for saving this slice of Wisconsin social history from obscurity." -Michael Popke, Isthmus Magazine

Description: The north is a treasure trove of folklore. From magical creatures of the old country to legends of the mysterious and macabre, this lore is a record of the stories people held on to and the customs, foods, and cures that filled their lives. Collected in the 1930s as part of the Federal Writers' Program, a Depression-era works project, these are the stories of Norwegian and Swiss immigrants, Native American medicine men and storytellers, and pioneers with memories of the earliest days of settlement in the Old Northwest. In search of stories, legends, songs, and other scraps of traditional knowledge, researchers fanned out across Wisconsin and other states. The resulting handwritten notes, thousands of pages in length, capture history as people remembered it. Blue Men and River Monsters collects the most interesting and noteworthy of these tales, placing them alongside stunning artwork collected by the Federal Art Project in Wisconsin. Peruse these pages and discover a new history of the people and places of the old north.

The Tower, the Monster, and the Tree by TM Gregg (TM Gregg)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by TMGreggAuthor (author): American author TM Gregg is giving away five digital copies of her horror mystery novel The Tower, the Monster, and the Tree.

"This is a tense tale of the conflict between psychology and the world of magic. Old evil and secrets color the present, where madness lies. Dr. Patrick Denny tries his best to help the tortured souls he encounters, but has his own burdens to deal with. It's an absorbing read, and moves quickly and surely, toggling from the past to the here and now." —Dale T. Phillips (LibraryThing Author)

For more information on this author and her other works visit The Stories of TM Gregg, check out the Book Trailer, and read about the young Patrick Denny in the free short story "The Cave".

Description: Walingford is a place rife with dark history and dirty secrets, and where Dr. Patrick Denny, renowned fiction writer, has returned to the profession he had forsaken years before—psychiatry. To the astonishment of his long-time girlfriend and ambitious literary agent, Helen Olssen, Patrick abruptly moves them from the glamor and excitement of the big city to the quaint, little backwater, abandoning a lucrative writing career from which they both profited. Manipulating his way into a job at Everston Psychiatric Hospital, or Foreverston as the more lucid patients call it, the overconfident and sometimes reckless doctor plunges into the damaged psyches of the most disturbed and hopeless—an insomniac, a schizophrenic, and a catatonic. But as he endeavors to untangle the mysteries of their troubled minds, his own tormented past begins to bleed into his present, and the macabre storyteller that still dwells within pushes him dangerously close to madness.

In this triptych of tales, psychology and superstition, reality and fantasy blend together as the boundaries between the stories within stories break down. In “The Tower” Samantha Elliot can’t fall asleep, but instead of pills Dr. Denny has prescribed a story–the diary of Alfred D. Cummings, an account of bewitchment and sacrifice. In “The Monster” one of the doctor’s fictional creations comes back to haunt him when Michael McKay, a man plagued by the horror of his childhood, believes himself to be the main character in this macabre tale of children and monsters. And in “The Tree” Dr. Denny’s own mental anguish threatens to destroy everything when he fails over and over again to free Amelia Dearborne, a patient trapped within the dark forest of her own mind.

The Joy of Argument by Albert Navarra (Boyle & Dalton)

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by Albert_Navarra (publisher): Boyle & Dalton is giving away five free paperback copies of The Joy of Argument by Albert Navarra. Honest reviews are appreciated.

Description: Everyone has an opinion. Whether you use argument in your professional life, or you’re trying to become better at everyday discourse, this book is a compact resource to help you get your point across.

Ernest Hemingway said, “The world is a fine place and worth fighting for.” What does “the world” mean? It could be macro issues, for example, human rights, social and economic policies, and international peace and prosperity. If you care about these issues, they are certainly worth promoting through sound argument. But “the world” can also mean your world, in an individual sense–for example, your health, your work, and your relationships. These issues affect you differently and are worth improving through sound argument. So when you think about it, there are as many reasons to argue as there are reasons to live. Your life itself is an argument, a statement of your beliefs and values, and what is important to you.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by rdemarest (author): Helping out my publisher by getting this giveaway posted! Books will be signed.

What people are saying about Less Than Charming:

"Sharp, sassy, full of invention and energy, and far more than charming—intoxicating."
(Gregory Maguire, author of Wicked and Egg & Spoon)

"Rebecca Demarest's Less Than Charming is a magical mash-up: part fairy tale, part mystery, part love story, the novel takes us on a dynamic ride with surprising turns, lively wit, and unforgettable characters. Above all, it's a celebration of the art and tradition of storytelling, a winning tribute to those old tales that spark the imagination every time we tell them anew."
(Scott Nadelson, author of Between You and Me & Saving Stanley)

"Less Than Charming is a totally original take on the world of storytelling. The characters are both fresh and familiar, and their story is compelling. This was a fun and unpredictable adventure in a creatively imagined world. I can't wait to see what happens to Sophie and Jack in their next adventure."
(Jenny Hannibal, librarian and avid reader)

Description: Imagine every character we have ever created is alive and well together in their own world. There is an economy of scale in which every Prince Charming is the same person, and every new story told about him just adds to his personality.

Sometimes that compound effect can drive a character insane.

Try as she might to recall any clue or detail, there is a black hole where Julia’s memories of that terrible event should be.

Nowhere seems safe—not the city, not the suburbs, not even the secluded lake town where she plans to raise her children. Convinced that the crimes are related, Julia tries to piece together memories from her final day with Ben. Are the sudden reminders of her brother clues that will lead her to her son’s abductor, or merely coincidence? Julia knows she has hours at best to find Will alive, but the deeper she digs, the more personal and terrifying the battle becomes, and an undying promise may be her only hope of saving herself and her son.

Offered by AlexTully (author): Giving away a SIGNED copy of my brand new release, Beautiful Chaos, a contemporary YA romance.

Description: While most seventeen year-olds work part-time delivering pizzas or whipping up frappuccinos, Brady O’Connell’s job is a little less conventional. Helping his dad with the family ‘business’ is a responsibility he doesn’t take lightly, especially when thousands of dollars are being exchanged. There are rules to be followed, timetables to be kept. But when his best friend Jay gets backstage concert tickets, and business interferes with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet their favorite band, Brady decides to break the rules, just one time. When an envelope full of cash ends up in the wrong hands—specifically in the hands of a pretty red-head named Vivienne—things get messy in a hurry. Devotion by Adam Makos (Random House)

Offered by jonnijones: I bought this book for discussion at my book club. All of us enjoyed it very much and had a lively discussion. I know there are a lot of history buffs out there who would also enjoy it.

Description: Devotion tells the inspirational story of the navy’s most famous aviator duo, Lieutenant Tom Hudner and Ensign Jesse Brown, and the Marines they fought to defend.

A white New Englander from the country-club scene, Tom passed up Harvard to fly fighters for his country.

An African American sharecropper’s son from Mississippi, Jesse became the navy’s first black carrier pilot to defend a nation that wouldn’t even serve him in a bar.

While much of America remained divided by segregation, Jesse and Tom joined forces as wingmen in Fighter Squadron 32.

Adam Makos takes us into the cockpit as these bold young aviators cut their teeth at the world’s most dangerous job—landing on the deck of an aircraft carrier—a line of work that Jesse’s young wife, Daisy, struggles to accept.

Deployed to the Mediterranean, Tom and Jesse meet the Fleet Marines, boys like PFC “Red” Parkinson, a farm kid from the Catskills. Between war games in the sun, the young men revel in the Riviera, partying with millionaires and even befriending the Hollywood starlet, Elizabeth Taylor.

Then comes the war no one expected, in faraway Korea.

Devotion brings us along, into the foxholes with Red and the Marines and soaring overhead with Tom and Jesse as they battle a North Korean invasion.

As the fury of the fighting escalates and the Marines are cornered at the Chosin Reservoir, Tom and Jesse fly in, guns-blazing, to try to save them.

When one of the duo is shot down behind enemy lines and pinned in his burning plane, the other faces an unthinkable choice: watch his friend die or attempt history’s most audacious one-man rescue mission.

A tug-at-the-heartstrings tale of bravery and selflessness, Devotion asks: How far would you go to save a friend?

Valiant Ambition: George Washington, Benedict Arnold, and the Fate of the American Revolution by Nathaniel Philbrick (Viking Books)

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by jetangen4571: I need more places to stash books!

action-adventure, american-rev-war, biography, friendship, george-washington, giveaways, historical-figures, historical-places-events, historical-research, military, nonfiction, print-copy
Format: Softcover ARC

Review: Of course Philbrick wrote a well researched, honest book about the personalities and events of the American Rev War, that's why my copy was confiscated by a former re-enactor and I bought myself an Audible copy. Originally, I won a hardcover through Goodreads Giveaways.
As expected, it is also well written and can be assimilated and understood by most. Usually, there is little time spent on the motivations of turncoats, but this book rectifies that in the case of Arnold. Obviously, I consider it a very worthwhile read, and do not hesitate to recommend it.

Description: From the "New York Times" bestselling author of "In The Heart of the Sea" comes a surprising account of the middle years of the American Revolution, and the tragic relationship between George Washington and Benedict Arnold.
In September 1776, the vulnerable Continental Army under an unsure George Washington (who had never commanded a large force in battle) evacuates New York after a devastating defeat by the British Army. Three weeks later, near the Canadian border, one of his favorite generals, Benedict Arnold, miraculously succeeds in postponing the British naval advance down Lake Champlain that might have ended the war. Four years later, as the book ends, Washington has vanquished his demons and Arnold has fled to the enemy after a foiled attempt to surrender the American fortress at West Point to the British. After four years of war, America is forced to realize that the real threat to its liberties might not come from without but from within.
"Valiant Ambition" is a complex, controversial, and dramatic portrait of a people in crisis and the war that gave birth to a nation. The focus is on loyalty and personal integrity, evoking a Shakespearean tragedy that unfolds in the key relationship of Washington and Arnold, who is an impulsive but sympathetic hero whose misfortunes at the hands of self-serving politicians fatally destroy his faith in the legitimacy of the rebellion. As a country wary of tyrants suddenly must figure out how it should be led, Washington s unmatched ability to rise above the petty politics of his time enables him to win the war that really matters."

Jefferson's America: The President, the Purchase, and the Explorers Who Transformed a Nation by Julie M. Fenster (Crown Publishing Group)

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by jetangen4571: It's all about bookspace, unfortunately for me, good for you.

biography, giveaways, historical-figures, historical-places-events, historical-research, nonfiction, print-copy, thereadingroom

Format: Hardcover
Review: I would probably feel better about this book if I had not just read one about the totally disreputable way in which Jefferson disdained and instructed his agents on how to cheat the Choctaws (and other tribes) out of their land. This is a great testimonial to the explorers and surveyors who trekked under the direction of an expansionist president. Lots of detail given, sometimes in a less than cohesive and rather pedantic manner. Appears to be very well researched.
I received this book for free through The Reading Room.

Description: ABOUT JEFFERSON’S AMERICA

The surprising story of how Thomas Jefferson commanded an unrivaled age of American exploration—and in presiding over that era of discovery, forged a great nation.

At the dawn of the nineteenth century, as Britain, France, Spain, and the United States all jockeyed for control of the vast expanses west of the Mississippi River, the stakes for American expansion were incalculably high. Even after the American purchase of the Louisiana Territory, Spain still coveted that land and was prepared to employ any means to retain it. With war expected at any moment, Jefferson played a game of strategy, putting on the ground the only Americans he could: a cadre of explorers who finally annexed it through courageous investigation.

Responsible for orchestrating the American push into the continent was President Thomas Jefferson. He most famously recruited Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, who led the Corps of Discovery to the Pacific, but at the same time there were other teams who did the same work, in places where it was even more crucial. William Dunbar, George Hunter, Thomas Freeman, Peter Custis, and the dauntless Zebulon Pike—all were dispatched on urgent missions to map the frontier and keep up a steady correspondence with Washington about their findings.

But they weren’t always well-matched—with each other and certainly not with a Spanish army of a thousand soldiers or more. These tensions threatened to undermine Jefferson’s goals for the nascent country, leaving the United States in danger of losing its foothold in the West. Deeply researched and inspiringly told, Jefferson’s America rediscovers the robust and often harrowing action from these seminal expeditions and illuminates the president’s vision for a continental America.

Description: Brooke is no stranger to the supernatural. In Chicago, vampires are just as prevalent as drug lords, and infinitely more bloodthirsty. So when her partner and fiancé dies in a mysterious fire while chasing down a lead in Salem, she suspects something dark and otherworldly is at play.

Blessed with the ability to see into the past by touching inanimate objects, Brooke transfers to the Salem PD, hoping her talent will help her get to the bottom of things. Between dodging assassination attempts and being stonewalled at every turn, the going is tough. Add in a mysterious fae club owner with secrets of his own and a personal grudge against her, and it becomes nearly impossible.

If Brooke wants to play in the supernatural sandbox, she’s going to have to roll up her sleeves and get dirty. But how many people will have to die for Brooke to discover the truth?
