The Amazing Mr. Morality: Stories by Jacob M. Appel (Vandalia Press / West Virginia University)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by AppelJacobM (author): PDF sent by author. Please consider adding this book and (if possible) my other books to your Librarything bookshelf, as this enables more giveaways in the future

Description: Literary short stories: The Amazing Mr. Morality features tenacious men and women whose determination to buck middle-class social convention draws them toward unforeseen challenges. A failed television producer insists upon having a woodchuck relocated from his lawn, only to receive desperate letters in which the woodchuck begs to return. An overconfident ne’er-do-well obtains a lucrative lecture invitation intended for a renowned ornithologist and decides to deliver the speech himself. An innocuous dispute over whether to rename a local street opens up racial fault lines that prove deadly.

The collection concludes with the title novella in which two unscrupulous ethicists, writing rival newspaper columns, seek to unseat each other by addressing questions such as: If you’re going to commit a murder, is it worse to kill when the victim is sleeping or awake?

The Liars' Asylum by Jacob M. Appel (Black Lawrence Press)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by AppelJacobM (author): PDF send directly by author. Please consider adding this book and my other books to your Librarything bookshelf, as this enables more giveaways in the future.

Description: LITERARY SHORT STORY COLLECTION: The frustrations of romantic love in its various guises—a domineering kindergarten teacher for a dashing artificial foliage designer, a suicidal physicist for his star student, a dialysis patient at a sleep-away camp for the camp owner’s daughter—provide the common theme for the stories in Jacob M. Appel’s seventh collection. We meet a psychiatrist dabbling with infidelity during a crisis in which rain turns into truth serum, a Finnish-American soldier charged with facilitating his commanding officer’s extra-marital affair, and a couple transporting a wealthy, “locked-in” patient across the Piedmont to his new nursing home. Appel’s literary short fiction offers a quirky window into the pangs and promise of love.

We attend a sister's second wedding with a "hand-me-down groom"; trick-or-treat with a young son; encounter a former teacher long retired, still critical; relive difficult ancestral memories of the Holocaust. Offered by amichaelschwarz (author): Hi, this is a new book that I am looking for reviews on. Proximity: Children of the Red Sun can best be described as a Firefly flavored dish with a side order of Kevin J. Anderson's Saga of Seven Suns and a smattering of Peter F. Hamilton, spiced with a bit of China Mieville. I hope you love it. All I ask is for an honest review.

Description: In the Rigel Kent solar system, on the world of Kam-no-Kai, a scientist discovers a First Race data disk, which may hold the identity of who and what the First Race was…

Meanwhile, Jace Starlon is hired by Mika Misu, an agent of the Silurian Magístrata, to investigate a First Race ruins. Jace initially refuses the offer, but reluctantly accepts when Mika pulls legal stings to force Jace’s cooperation.

Their destination lies in the Glass Desert, near the infamous Janosheck Crater, on the rocky world of Kam-no-Kai, known to Old Earthers as Proxima b. The trek to the destination is dangerous due to nuclear fallout from the Janosheck and political tension between the New Earth United Republics and Silurian High Command, the two world-nations that control Kam-no-Kai’s natural resources and antiquities market.

Jace hires a guide, a Kam-no-Kai native named Nyx, a mag tao woman whose connections with the tao underworld and experience as a Glass Desert guide make her the perfect and obvious choice for the mission.

Some extinct races should remain extinct.

Offered by SaraJoEaston (author): I am the author, and I want to share Eramine's story with the dedicated readers of LibraryThing before it is released to the general public! I appreciate any honest review you give.

Description: Eramine felt uneasy ever since she started having dreams of a winged creature calling out her name. Now a pair of the dream creatures has arrived while she is awake, declaring themselves Onizards and insisting that Eramine has to go with them or their de facto princess will die. The creatures have been terrifying every coastal village as they ask for Eramine by name; with her village as the next to be visited if the Onizards don't find her, how could Eramine not go with them?

Yet now her brother Marinel thinks she is in mortal danger, and he is putting all of his resources as well as his relationship with his newly wedded wife True on the line as he sails after her. He may have even harvested a poison capable of killing the Onizards.

Meanwhile, Eramine's newfound Onizard friends, Rulraeno and Senquena, are both acting as if they have some dark and shameful secret they are hiding instead of mutual feelings for one another. On top of that, Eramine's odd dreams are getting more frequent and are starting to have real-world consequences as she gets closer to the land of the Onizards.

It is a lot for any fourteen year old to handle, but Eramine is determined to make things right. She knows there is going to be a deadly confrontation if she can't figure out a way to reconcile the two species and help them get over their mutual dark past.

Forced together in close proximity it doesn’t take long before desire flares. Falling into the arms of a sexy stranger is not Ashlynn’s idea of a honeymoon.

The only thing that could make this holiday complete is Jaron’s love.

As the names suggests this is a spicy romance. Medium heat, so if a little of that is not your thing, this is a thumbs up.

The Mask of Sanity by Jacob M. Appel (Permanent Press)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by AppelJacobM (author): PDFs sent directly via email by the author.

*If you enjoy, please consider adding this book and my other books to your Librarything bookshelf, as this makes future giveaways possible.

Description: On the outside, Dr. Jeremy Balint is a pillar of the community: the youngest division chief at his hospital, a model son to his elderly parents, fiercely devoted to his wife and two young daughters. On the inside, Dr. Jeremy Balint is a high-functioning sociopath—a man who truly believes himself to stand above the ethical norms of society. As long as life treats him well, Balint has no cause to harm others. When life treats him poorly, he reveals the depths of his cold-blooded depravity.

At a cultural moment when the media bombards us with images of so-called sociopaths who strive for good and criminals redeemed by repentance,The Mask of Sanity offers an antidote to implausible tales of evil gone right. In contrast to fictional predecessors like Dostoyevesky's Raskolnikov and Camus' Mersault, Dr. Balint is a man who already has it all —and will do everything in his power, no matter how immoral, to keep what he has.

The Game of VORs by Andrew Orange (Andrew Orange)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by Andrew_Orange (author): Greetings!
My pen name is Andrew Orange.
Before starting to write, I read a lot.
"The Game of VORs" is my first novel.
Happy to send you an e-book (mobi, epub, pdf, whatever you prefer).

Description: "The Game of VORs is gritty, tragic, and very emotional... a suspenseful, coming of age story in a dark world." — Readers' Favorite

"I would recommend this to any person interested in twisted political discrepancies or learning about different takes on identity and morality." — LitPick

"What strikes me the most about this book is the quality of its dialogues: they feel authentic and add a sense of realness in a dystopian world." — Goodreads

"Speaking of reader experience, I can only say that this was a high class read that I enjoyed greatly, and the translation is so skillful that it wasn’t at all clear that it was a translation at all.
I see that other reviewers have compared the book to some modern YA books; personally I found it was most highly comparable to Dune; a militaristic aristocracy, an ostensibly innocuous heir who will turn out to change everything, a feared outclass with paranormal abilities and their own set of rules, a harsh and unforgiving environmental setting — we were just missing the worms.
In short, the book exceeded my expectations, and I highly recommend it on its own merit."
— Amazon

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by AppelJacobM (author): PDF sent by author. Please consider adding this book and my other books to your Librarything bookshelf, as this enables more giveaways in the future.

Description: A mystery novel, but also a satire of religious mystery novels (ie. if you are offended by mild profanity or an irreverent rabbi, please do not request.)

From the jacket:
Two elderly spinster sisters––Florence and Lorraine––have lived together ever since the death of their wealthy father, living on generous stipends provided in his will that continue until one of them marries––at which time that sister is cut off financially. The sisters’ family is shaken up when Florence invites them to her wedding. The morning after the wedding, Florence is found dead in her bed. Was it an asthma attack as her new husband and the police believe or did someone enter her room in the middle of the night and suffocate the old woman with a pillow? Local amateur sleuth Rabbi Jacob Kappelmacher is brought in to investigate the suspicious death. He soon discovers that all of the sisters’ relatives stayed overnight following the wedding and could have strangled the old woman in her sleep. So could have the bridegroom. But who did it? And why? With no money and no motive, why would anyone kill the old woman? Rabbi Kappelmacher begins his investigation by interviewing all of the interested parties, intent on figuring out the convoluted and devious crime––and the sinister culprit behind it.

Acne: Just Another Four-Letter Word by Aarti Patel (D2 Books)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by Apatelnd (author): I'm a naturopathic doctor with an exciting new book about acne that boldly addresses this skin condition using a mind-body approach.

I'm seeking reviews from readers who have acne, have tried everything under the sun to treat it, and who can potentially benefit from reading the book.

You can choose the eBook format you prefer. Reviews on Amazon, GoodReads, and LibraryThing are appreciated.

Description: Put acne in your rearview mirror, once and for all.

For those of us who have struggled with chronic acne, we know that these irritating bumps don't just mess with our skin and appearance. They also curse at us every day, affecting our confidence and self-image. When you look in the mirror, you may hear the words acne uses: It throws out insults and belittling messages, and it tells us not to bother trying to make our skin better. It says just give up. At the same time, acne also demands that we drop everything we're doing and give it constant attention. This four-letter word is a bully, not just a diagnosis and physical skin condition the way we're taught to think by mainstream medicine and the skin care industry. To truly defeat acne once and for all, both the mind and body have to get involved.

We need a better approach to treating acne than simply face washes, creams, supplements, pharmaceuticals, and dietary changes. These methods don't address the bullying tactics acne uses to try and control our lives, so they don't tend to be long-term solutions. Acne often just bulldozes over these efforts, costing us the money and time we spend on trying to fix our skin, and leaving us frustrated.

Well, now there's a way to talk and fight back. You don't have to sit there silently while acne tries to take away what's yours, including your skin and your life. You can start recognizing the false messages that this four-letter word is sending you and separate your identity from them, reclaiming your skin in the process. You can stand up for yourself in the face of acne and refuse to revolve your life around it. Acne: Just Another Four-Letter Word shows you how to do just that.

First and Ten by Erin and Margo Bond Collins Hayes (Bathory Gate Press)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by MargoBondCollins (author): Review copies giveaway by the authors of First and Ten.

Description: When Madison Harte inherits a football team with three hot players who all want her, there’s one problem: when it comes to America’s favorite sport, she’s clueless.

I have the worst luck. Failed tech startup? Check. Cheating ex-boyfriend? Check. No idea what to do next? Check.

Then my Uncle Dusty passes away and leaves a whole football team to me. Never mind that I’ve never even seen a game. Who has time for that, right?

But I can sell the team and turn my life around, so I fly from San Francisco to Birmingham, Alabama, where I find a whole new level of football obsession—and start to develop a fascination of my own. Mostly with the three players who are very, very interested in me.

I never expected to find a team of my own. Or that there would be so many obstacles in our way.

Luckily, Madison won’t have to choose just one man in this contemporary reverse harem where Friday Night Lights and Bridget Jones collide and where—hallelujah—it’s still raining men.

The Harrowed Half-Breed: A Tarnished Lands Novella by P.A. Wikoff (Modern Tunic)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by PAWikoff (author): Enter for a chance to win an ebook copy of my novella, "The Harrowed Half-Breed." Good luck!

Description: Magic has been slowly fading from the enchanted forest ever since the greedy humans invaded. The native feathered-folk were kind in sharing their homeland, but peace couldn’t last forever. Conflict stirs while Barne, half human/half native, is stuck in the middle. Trapped between two worlds he must try and find himself before choosing a side. In a world where he never really belongs, Barne searches to find his smile through all means necessary. But there’s a dark secret that holds his happiness hostage…

In a world of swords and sorcery, darkness and despair, nothing comes without a price.

About The Tarnished Lands: In the aftermath of the utopian regime that ruled for over a millennium, famine, chaos, murder and deceit reign in lieu of balance. The pendulum now swings in favor of disorder. The fierce strong-arm the weak, cowards lurk in the shadows like rats, and the wicked take everything that’s left over. This is no longer a place for good intentions, this is a place of survival.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by MichaelDrakich (author): Sometimes a trip into a fantasy world, filled with the magic of the mind is a good place to go, add the intense storyline, the detailed world and a young hero who clearly started out WAY out of his league and it becomes clear that sometimes fantasy characters mirror reality. – Diane at Tome Tender (Amazon Top 500 Reviewer)

The demon stones are being opened and the vile creatures once more roam the land. War has broken open between realms as the fingers of accusation are pointed. Right. Like that was ever a simple thing to do."
In the heart of the Wimmera region of Victoria, an ancient gateway to Eden is kept hidden and safe by a creature so powerful that even the moon would obey her commands – at least it would if she had any idea that she wasn’t just a normal girl about to finish high school.

East Van Saturday Night by Rod Raglin (Rod Raglin)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by RodRaglin (author): Prior to self-publishing this work, I received several very positive rejections (oxymoron) including this one,

"... your writing is fresh, visceral and intuitively captures the rawness of youth and the dark energy of East Van...".

"Dark energy"? There's something underlying these stories and that could be it.

And yes, most include profanity, sex and violence, but not gratuitously, though perhaps that subjective.

Description: East Vancouver in the '50s and '60s was a low income, blue-collar neighbourhood. Kids grew up with minimum supervision. They left home in the morning, showed up for dinner, and were gone again until "the gun" sounded at 9 p.m.

During the time away adventures were undertaken, friendships were forged, and character was created. East Van Rules was not only meant as a challenge, but also a code to live by.

These four short stories and novella highlight coming of age events; a ten-year-old playing for the elementary school softball championship, a teenage tough strutting his stuff at the local dance, a hippie youth hitchhiking across Canada during the Summer of Love.

Watershed moments told from a perspective that explains why you can take the boy out of East Van, but you'll never take East Van out of the boy.

To Squeeze a Prairie Dog: An American Novel by Scott Semegran (Mutt Press)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by scott_semegran (author): I am giving away 50 copies of my new novel, To Squeeze a Prairie Dog: An American Novel, in PDF or ePub formats to 50 LibraryThing users in exchange for honest book reviews. Thank you and good luck!

Description: This is the story of J. D. Wiswall, a sincere young man from a small town, who joins a state government agency in a data entry department comprised of quirky clerks. Quickly endearing himself to the diverse group in Unit 3, J. D. learns his coworkers have a pact to share the $10,000 prize if they win a cost-savings program for a suggestion that could save the government money, in turn helping them rise above their own personal struggles. A multimillion-dollar cost-savings suggestion is accidentally discovered by J. D.'s supervisor, the goof-off alcoholic Brent Baker. This lucrative discovery catches the attention of crotchety Governor Dwayne Bennett, a media-hungry demagogue, who turns the coworkers of Unit 3 into props for his selfish political reasons. The publicity surrounding the clerks piques the interest of a newspaper reporter, Esther Jean Stinson, whose investigative reporting threatens to reveal the governor's career-ending secret, as well as jeopardizes the prize that the clerks so desperately desire.

Along with J. D. and Brent, the lives of the amiable coworkers in Unit 3 are revealed. There is Rita Jackson, the kind matriarch of her large brood, who spends her time outside of work caring for her five struggling children and thirteen wily grandchildren. Then there's Deborah Martinez, a single mother to a felonious son, who struggles to keep her head above her sinking financial woes. There's also Conchino Gonzalez, a quiescent giant of Mexican and Japanese descent, who street races at night to relieve worries about his ailing grandfather in Japan. Finally, J. D. has dreams bigger than his small hometown can provide, and Brent wants nothing more than to drop the bureaucratic routine to become a rock star with his bar band.

A few blocks away from the agency that houses Unit 3, Governor Bennett, a smarmy politician who whizzes around the Governor's Mansion on a gold-plated wheelchair, parades the unwitting clerks in front of the local media in an attempt to raise his sagging poll numbers. But reporter Esther Jean sees through the governor's bald-faced motives and uncovers secrets not meant to be revealed. Will her revelations keep Unit 3 from receiving their elusive prize?

From award-winning writer Scott Semegran, To Squeeze a Prairie Dog is an American, modern-day tale with working-class folks—part fable, part satire, and part comedy—revealing that camaraderie amongst kind-hearted friends wins the day over evil intentions.

Indian Immigrant by Biku Ghosh

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by Mylibrevs (author): This book is available as ebook only in epub, mobi and PDF formats.

I hope you enjoy this book and post a review on Amazon.

Description: ‘We looked for workers. We got people instead.’ - Max Frisch Indians have been travelling to and settling in Britain since 1600, about as long as Britons have been sailing to India.
Colonialism powerfully altered what being ‘Indian' meant culturally and legally in Britain – a meaning quite differently perceived in India. The lived experience of Indians venturing into Britain varied in their historical context, gender, class and individual circumstances. This fiction tells stories of some of the early settlers who perished in harsh conditions and of the many professionals, who arrived later in Britain to fulfil demands in various public services, successfully integrating into the British society albeit facing many prejudices. Right-wing agenda claims an insular ‘all white-England' apparently under threat from the non-white aliens. Nativist British hostility to immigrants has increased since the Brexit Referendum.
This book tells the stories of Indian immigrants not as an offshoot of race relations but from their perspective.

Reality Inspector by John Caris (Westgate House)

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by JCaris (author): Win a signed, first edition copy of John Caris’ “Reality Inspector,” perhaps the first computer-hacking novel. A world championship chess match and computer-hacking form the basis for an exciting story.
As the Indy author of the novel, I have some copies of the first edition. I like to share my books with others.

Description: An early, perhaps the first, computer-hacking novel.
A world championship chess match is the backdrop for this intriguing mystery story. The main computer of the Federal Reserve is being tampered with by a sinister power, and the results could wreak havoc with the fiscal policy, causing the U.S. economy to fragment into pieces. Actual chess games are used, and they act as launching pads for journeys into strange and challenging worlds.
The mind has the power to project itself and to manipulate its environment. It has the power to shape external reality according to its inner reality. And when powerful minds become engaged in combat, a mighty and fierce struggle ensues.
The outcome of a chess game can be explained in several ways: chance blunders on one side or sharp playing on the other side. Or some kind of mind power influencing the players. It is a difficult idea to accept.

Review of Reality Inspector:
“ A delight and a challenge ... very recommended."—New York Tribune
"An extraordinary novel." — Science Fiction Review
"A new age classic." —Better Lives for a Better World
"A gifted writer." —Slidell Daily News

Running to Catch Up by Peter Flatman

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by Mylibrevs (author): This book is available as ebook only in epub, mobi and PDF formats.

I hope you enjoy this book and post a review on Amazon.

Description: Peter Flatman was in his late twenties when he persuaded others to run a brutal road relay in Lancashire despite this being his first race.
He did not look like a runner and was shortish and muscular. Some said his style was ugly. So why was he drawn to long distance running that, at best, only offered blood, sweat, tears, fatigue and pain. Yet killing chickens from when he was 11 gave him a tough edge. Twelve years later he was described by Martin Duff as being the best, if not, the best Vet-40 in the UK.
Peter did not run at school, or as a teenager, yet confounded his critics with national rankings at 25k, 20 miles and the marathon. Peter’s story is enthralling, and he believes it’s never too late to start running. Competing for the RAF and Combined Services gave him the confidence to become the founder of one of the first running shops in the UK.
Be inspired by Peter’s story, how he never gives up and finds a way to cope whatever Fate throws his way. Enjoy the pathos of the free-fall and the joy of the Cleveland Marathon. Peter Flatman was also a successful coach who instilled inner-belief in his runners. A true story of a determined and singular man.

The Wrong Side of the Room: A Life in Music Theater by Norman Mathews (Eburn Press)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by normanmathews (author): I am both the author and the publisher of this member giveaway.I wish to make people aware of the struggle of a working artist who did not become a celebrity but has an interesting a tale to tell as his more famous colleagues.

Description: Norman Mathews was born in the wrong town, the wrong era, and with the wrong name. What’s a boy to do? He conjured up a more enticing, imaginary world to better navigate the
perils of childhood. Dreams of a life in the theater and of passionate romance were stymied by lack of self-assurance. Psychological abuse by a priest led to absurdly comic psychotherapy over his sexuality. At age twenty, a failed suicide nearly shattered a promising future. From the
ashes of this calamity rose a staggering resolve to build a meaningful life. Byzantine twists paved the way to a career as an editor and eventually a life as a Broadway dancer. As a performer, he worked with Barbra Streisand, Dorothy Lamour, and Gene Kelly. After an untimely injury, he reinvented himself as a pianist, composer, and playwright, for which he created award-winning works for top Broadway and concert-stage performers.

His passionate and inspirational autobiography is steeped in dark humor, hilarious celebrity gossip, and backstage intrigue. It is a rare book that can intimately describe a self-destructive trajectory, recount the grisly murder of a
Broadway conductor, provide an inside look at the embezzlement of a famed Broadway producer, detail an ugly
never-reported rehearsal scene involving Michael Bennett, and give a behind-the-scenes look at the birth of new
musicals and operas. He brings his colorful Sicilian-American family, his triumphs and heartbreaks, and his mine-strewn path to fulfilling love vividly to life. This riveting drama is
a paean to all late-bloomers, proof that no matter how many wrong cards you are dealt, it’s possible, with hope and tenacity, to come up with a winning hand.

The Ugly Priest by Richard Stickann (AuthorHouse)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by AmandaKerr (agent): We are giving away pdf, mobi and epub copies of The Ugly Priest in hopes of getting more reviews.

Description: The Ugly Priest is a telling story of a priest’s missteps with the women who haunt his life, and his struggle to repair his soul and restore his vocation. It is a story of deceit, vulnerability and the loss of commitment. It displays the devastation of human frailty and reveals weaknesses that even a priest can’t escape.

If Father George Bernard had only known early on that the job of being a priest pounds the hell out of a man, his life choices might have been different. That pounding hit him countless times over his twenty years as a priest inflicting considerable damage on his soul and resulting in some bad choices. Jennifer was one, Helen another. He succumbs to the vulnerability every priest battles throughout his lifetime. The temptations of the flesh have a power his vocation is hard pressed to withstand.

The Ugly Priest reveals a vocation in shambles, deteriorated not only because of Father Bernard’s moral lapses but also because of his life’s lack of substance and value. His duties at Immaculate Conception Parish on the West Side of Chicago are tedious and distressing. The sin, dying, dishonesty and infidelity of his parishioners drains him. Deepening his distress is his life at a rundown, disintegrating parish with an outdated liturgy and a pastor who is a rude, spiteful and offensive old man. Father Bernard’s attempt to save himself from his cheerless, desolate life leads him down a dangerous path. Can he salvage his failing vocation and repair his troubled soul? Will he find the strength to restore the spiritual meaning and substance that once guided him as a priest?

Underground by Kit Sergeant (Thompson Belle Press)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by kitsarge (author): Please review Underground on Amazon!

Description: Some might call them heroes. Others consider them traitors.

As the Civil War threatens to tear the nation apart, four women—a slave, a seductress, a soldier, and a spy—are willing to risk everything they have, except their convictions.

Hattie Lewis is one of the Pinkerton National Detective Agency's first female employees, but she is tired of playing a minor role in a man’s world. When her boss asks her to accompany his top operative on a mission behind enemy lines, she readily accepts. But the mission threatens to have dire consequences for them both.

Although Mary Jane was born a slave, her mistress, Elizabeth (Miss Lizzie) Van Lew, always had other plans for her, including loaning her services to Jefferson Davis’s household. Mary Jane soon becomes privy to the innermost operations of the Confederate government, which she then passes on to Miss Lizzie via her contacts in the Richmond Underground. When a secret from Mary Jane’s past is revealed, she wonders if she will ever be able to free herself from Miss Lizzie’s grasp.

Despite her name, Belle Boyd is no typical Southern woman. As she watches her father and cousins rush to join the Confederacy, she longs to do her own part. After realizing she isn’t cut out for nursing, Belle resorts to using her coquettish charms to ferret information from occupying Yankees. But, after she is thrown into jail and threatened with the noose, will she finally realize her actions have consequences?

When Loreta Velasquez’s husband is killed in a training drill, she decides to avenge his death by joining the Confederate Army. Disguised as a soldier named Harry T. Buford, Loreta participates in the battles of Bull Run, Shiloh, and Ball’s Bluff. But when the hardships she experiences do not quench her thirst for glory, Loreta conceives a plan for the South's last chance to win the war.

Told from the viewpoints of these real-life women—both Confederate and Union—Underground: Traitors and Spies in Lincoln’s War is an absorbing tale of love, loyalty, and liberation.

Garry, his handler, introduces Xeno to the industrial version of the black box, allowing Xeno's pineal gland access to synthetic sensory perception with the turn of a dial.

Xeno's initial mission is to test the black box on the field, under Garry's watchful eye, and to locate Trianne, an ex co-worker, ex model, ex pole dancer for the Shoki Pao, gone missing and showing signs of spontaneous human combustion, an emerging side effect of Black Magic, and a public safety hazard.

All he has to do is bring Trianne back to Intellegella for treatment. It's that simple . . . according to Garry.

The Cynic in Extremis by Jacob M. Appel (Able Muse Press)

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by AppelJacobM (author): Paperback sent by author. Please consider adding this book and my other titles to your Librarything bookshelf, as this enables more giveaways in the future.

Description: Poems. Finalist for the 2017 Able Muse Book Award. Eclectic characters in everyday scenarios populate Jacob M. Appel's THE CYNIC IN EXTREMIS. We attend a sister's second wedding with a "hand-me-down groom"; trick-or-treat with a young son; encounter a former teacher long retired, still critical; relive difficult ancestral memories of the Holocaust. Full of fun, wit and insight, these poems present—often unapologetically—uncomfortable truths gleaned from close examination of social norms and conventions mostly taken for granted.

Hard Cider Abbey by K.P. Cecala (Createspace)

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by Kcecala (author): Hard Cider Abbey is my first foray into mystery writing, and I'd love some feedback before continuing with the series. I tried to learn from the best: Agatha Christie, G.K.Chesterton, Ellis Peters...I'm staging this giveaway to pick up some honest reviews, but please keep in mind it's more of a quiet, quirky semi-cozy mystery, not one of those fast-paced, hardcore thrillers. Thanks!

Description: A classic whodunit in the tradition of Brother Cadfael and Father Brown, Hard Cider Abbey is set in a mountaintop monastery in contemporary West Virginia. Two young monks seek out the killer of their abbey's librarian and hagiographer, but along the way unravel an unsavory secret which threatens the future of the monastery. A Barefoot monk mystery (#1)

The Light: A Modern-Day Journey for Peace by Judith T. Lambert (Ann Duran Productions)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by JudithLambert (author): Please note this is a KINDLE version only giveaway and that The Light doesn't come with award stickers at this time. I hope you'll enjoy the book!

Description: This is a KINDLE version only Giveaway! Understand religion from a fresh perspective? Nourish your soul and be prepared to view God differently? Is global spirituality possible? While many have heard of the Near Death Experience, this book is unique, as it searches for the common thread between us, here, in this world. This is not a book on the afterlife or what happens on the other side. There is another way to view this phenomena. Discovering a global context for the Near Death Experience is exciting. A Modern-Day Journey for Peace, winner of five book awards, moves us to consider if the Light of the Near Death Experience isn’t actually the bedrock of religion and the springboard for a universal connection. This modern-day story melds the innumerable religious experiences into a visual whole. The essence of God becomes globally and tangibly defined. This story uncovers our prevailing spiritual unity despite our world’s seemingly different beliefs. Ultimately, there is a powerful spiritual bond we hold with one another. Gods and the names for God have changed in every era, yet one dynamic remains constant—the Light.

Religion’s Common Denominator? . . .The Light
God does not have a religion.
God does not speak a language.
God does not have a culture.
It is we who require these things.
This is a ground-breaking memoir on the Near Death Experience that unveils the roots to a global spirituality.

*Please note Print and Ebooks do not come with award stickers.

Offered by Yang.Huang (author): GIVEAWAY signed by the author! Do you like family stories? Then this book is for you. Requesting a review on Amazon, Goodreads, and LibraryThing.

My Old Faithful (Juniper Prize winner)

Description: Winner of the Juniper Prize for Fiction

The Mercury News: My Old Faithful is "a rich contemporary narrative of family dynamics and social upheaval."

San Francisco Chronicle, Recommended Reading: "My Old Faithful zooms readers straight into the minds and hearts of each member of a middle-class family in a struggling, censored, restricted China....we feel ourselves becoming each protagonist in the course of each story."

Evoking both the drama of familial intimacy and the ups and downs of the everyday, My Old Faithful introduces readers to a close-knit Chinese family. These ten interconnected short stories, which take place in China and the United States over a thirty-year period, merge to paint a nuanced portrait of family life, full of pain, surprises, and subtle acts of courage. Richly textured narratives from the mother, the father, the son, and the daughters play out against the backdrop of China's social and economic change.

With quiet humor and sharp insight into the ordinary, Yang Huang writes of a father who spanks his son out of love, a brother who betrays his sister, and a young woman who dares bring a brown man home to her conservative parents. She writes of an aging wife and the kindness she shows a young prostitute caught soliciting her husband; of a woman returning to China after many years to find her country changed in ways both expected and startling. This collection, by a writer who grew up in Jiangsu province and participated in the 1989 student uprisings, is remarkable in its sense of place and fidelity to lived human experience.

A woman can have a career and family, but which comes first?

Description: A starving panda eats a hen in order to nurse her cub in the dead of winter—there begins the perilous adventure of Gu Bao, a girl who grows up under the Chinese government's one-child policy. Bao falls in love with a handsome soldier during the tumultuous Tiananmen Square protests in 1989. The demonstrations transfix her fellow students and kill one of her friends. Bao finds herself pregnant and faces the end of her academic career. Her grieving parents arrange for a secret abortion and ship her off to her grandparents' house in the remote countryside where she was raised.

Bao searches for her inner strength while exploring the evocative Sichuan mountain landscape. She befriends a panda mother caught in a poacher's snare, and an expectant young mother hiding from villainous one-child policy enforcers bent on giving compulsory abortions. All struggle against society to preserve the treasure of their little ones. Can Bao save a rural family from destruction, and help a giant panda along the way? She devises a daring plan that changes the lives of everyone around her.

A deeply moving story of family, passion, and courage, Living Treasures is both a gripping page-turner and an incisive social critique, portraying a young woman's quest for romance and justice in a rigid society. Bao, a law student, aspires to have both a career and family, but which comes first? A baby rarely arrives at a convenient time. The decision about the woman's body is not an easy choice but rather a compromise that comes with a dear price. Bao's struggle encapsulates many women's journeys through life, as they experience the triumphs, suffer the heartbreaks, and learn to live with the consequences.
