White Seed by Kenneth Marshall (New Athenian)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by MarKen (author): One hundred free e-books of the first book in an original science fiction series. Book two, Black Seed, is now available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Apple iBooks, Google Play, and other stores. Reviews much appreciated!

Description: The White Seed Brings Life to Worlds

Three thousand years ago, the seeds arrived from Earth on hundreds of worlds. The developed worlds formed the Network, connected only by radio and laser. Since the time of the seeds, nothing but information has traveled between the stars. Now a starship, The Child of Ambition, is changing that. Her first mission: to explore the dark worlds, the ones that failed.

Kali Hakoian, pilot-astronaut and war hero, thought landing on the super-Earth of Keto would be routine. The emptiest seed world—its global ocean matted with algae and crawling with hurricanes—hides the oldest human ruins. Her crew of scientists: a dreamer, a believer, and a retired assassin. Their hypothesis—self-termination of the seed base.

But when an act of sabotage strands her in the path of a superstorm, she’s forced to escape with the man she trusts the least. They may never find out what happened to the settlers—unless it happens to them. Can she trust her crew enough to find a way out of the darkness?

The Ephialtes Shorts Collection by Gavin E Parker (parcom entertainment)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by gavineparker (publisher): Enter for a chance to win an eBook copy of The Ephialtes Shorts Collection in EPUB, MOBI or PDF format.

Description: The Ephialtes Trilogy chronicles the conflict between Earth and Mars, triggered by Mars' secession from the USAN in the aftermath of World War IV. The stories of The Ephialtes Shorts Collection make up the connective tissue between books one and two of the trilogy. The collection comprises all four previously released shorts together with the exclusive Ephialtes Short V: Why Am I So Clever?

Why Am I So Clever?
Dr Daniel Kostovich, head of R&D at Venkdt Mars Corp and Special Adviser to the MSS, has always been a smart cookie. When he starts speculating on the provenance of his abilities he finds more questions than answers.

As various possible solutions come and go Kostovich works on the pressing issues facing Mars - food production, defence equipment, and the unresolved conflict with the USAN. Is the ultimate answer to his question unknowable and, given the storm clouds gathering on the horizon, shouldn't his undivided attention be elsewhere?

Be All You Can Be
When MSS Officer Kristen Stahl is seriously injured in the Battle of Allentown Spaceport the stability of her old life is thrown upside down. Along with her injuries she has to cope with a failing relationship and the possibility there is no longer a place for her in her beloved Martian Security Service.

An uncertain future awaits all of Mars, but it seems the fates are determined to test Officer Stahl to the very limit of her capability. Can she fight her way back to where she needs to be, or is the simple act of survival victory enough?

Son of New York
The USAN isn't the place it used to be. The Martian deuterium embargo is causing huge economic damage, and the public is restive. Student Adam Wilson believes in his country but is reluctant to voice his feelings in light of the burgeoning protest movement's belligerent attitude.

Following his own brush with authority Adam has to reassess his beliefs. Could it be that their once great president has stepped over the line? With a huge schism looming Adam is going to have to pick a side, but in a world filled with uncertainty it will be no easy choice.

A Cold Wind Blows
The huge biodomes in southwest Marineris supply Mars with food. Landing a job there is a dream come true for Kimberly Gooding, whose ultimate goal is to save enough money to emigrate to Earth.

When she's called on to do some work outside the domes an urban legend about the ghost of a dead commander gives her pause. The conflict between her rational mind and some baser instincts takes centre stage, and her trust in her workmates is called into question. Is the problem lurking somewhere outside the domes or is it buried deep in Kimberly's subconscious?

See the Worlds
Joining the army is simply a way out for a young person from the backwaters of the USAN, and landing a plumb posting at the garrison on Mars seems to be the icing on the cake. However, the trip of a lifetime coincides with the Martian bid for independence.

As the cushy posting turns into something far more harrowing our narrator reflects on the events that took him to Mars and casts a fearful eye on what the future might hold.

The Ephialtes Shorts look back to the first book of the trilogy and forward to the second, exploring characters and events from each in new and unexpected ways. Does the ghost of a lost commander really roam the Martian outlands? How would it feel to be a patriotic young American coming to realise it may be necessary to reassess your values? As a trooper injured in the episode depicted at the close of Ephialtes, how would you cope with your rehabilitation? Just why is Kostovich so damned clever?

Book two of the Ephialtes Trilogy will be released autumn 2017.

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by cmtusa (author): Would like review in exchange for free e-book

Description: Dead birds are falling out of the sky and Maurice Delahoussaye suspects the air in New Orleans may be unsafe. The Department of Wildlife and Fisheries claims the birds were poisoned, while meteorologists suggest they were killed by a sudden change in temperature. There's even talk of terrorism, Bird Flu, West Nile Virus, or high levels of mold spores left over from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Gradually, Maurice becomes increasingly fearful that the government is hiding an ominous secret, and when he begins having strange religious premonitions suggesting that his wife is pregnant with Jesus Christ, he becomes convinced that the dead birds are a sign from God. IN THE CITY OF FALLING STARS is a tragicomedy that examines the increasing paranoia following the September 11th attacks, as well as a commentary on the devastating psychological scars that the storm left on the city of New Orleans.

The Mask of Sanity by Jacob M. Appel (The Permanent Press)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by AppelJacobM (author): PDFs directly from author. Please consider adding to your bookshelf.

Description: On the outside, Dr. Jeremy Balint is a pillar of the community: the youngest division chief at his hospital, a model son to his elderly parents, fiercely devoted to his wife and two young daughters. On the inside, Dr. Jeremy Balint is a high-functioning sociopath—a man who truly believes himself to stand above the ethical norms of society. As long as life treats him well, Balint has no cause to harm others. When life treats him poorly, he reveals the depths of his cold-blooded depravity.

At a cultural moment when the media bombards us with images of so-called sociopaths who strive for good and criminals redeemed by repentance,The Mask of Sanity offers an antidote to implausible tales of evil gone right. In contrast to fictional predecessors like Dostoyevesky's Raskolnikov and Camus' Mersault, Dr. Balint is a man who already has it all —and will do everything in his power, no matter how immoral, to keep what he has.

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by A.Berry (author): Pdf ebook. Reviews for Amazon, LibraryThing,Goodreads, Barnes or iTunes

Description: In the year 1930, the community of Potluck, Louisiana was one of divided lines - not of black and white, but of the haves and the have-nots. Of the residents of Potluck was one Simone Tout, a young woman of twenty years born an only child to a father who started the town school and a mother, Berta, who was proudly employed as a cook in the mayor's kitchen.

Two men - one you love, one you hate...

Georges Andrieux, the handsome, well-educated son of the mayor, is a man that Simone despises - a man who is more than aggressive in his determination to make Simone his wife. Berta of course is thrilled, but against her mother's wishes the headstrong Simone has plans of her own in the form of Cotton Neal, a young man who Berta considers as nothing more than a common thug, jailbird, and bootlegger from the wrong side of the tracks.

"Ain't nothing but a bunch of wild ass negros up in them hills..."

But to Simone, Cotton is the air she breathes - her future husband and the love of her life.

While Simone and Cotton prepare to run away together, the owner of a local opium den is found floating face down in the river. When Cotton is blamed for the murder he disappears, and while law enforcement work vigilantly to apprehend him, Simone is left to endure Georges' bitter, violent form of jealousy. When he threatens to reveal Cotton's whereabouts, Simone finally falls into his trap as he uses blackmail as a form of revenge.

Toni...

You run away only to have your car break down on the side of the road. You accidentally murder the mother of a good samaritan...

The events that follow will change the lives of each woman forever.

Description: Named a 2012 Indie Reader Discovery Awards finalist (parenting) and a 2011 Foreword Reviews Book of the Year finalist (both humor and essay categories), How to Raise a Good Kid is not a conventional "how-to" but rather a collection of 23 humorous and heartfelt stories about the challenges and joys of growing up for both parents and children. By way of background, Good Kid is the first in a series of two books with its sequel, High School Dance, having just been released. The origin of the two books is as follows:

How to Raise a Good Kid and High School Dance are the culmination of a project that began shortly after my wife and I welcomed our son to the world. Like most first-time fathers, I felt a new and profound sense of responsibility and immediately became determined to pass along every lesson I believed was important. So even though my pride and joy was only drooling, pooping and sleeping at this point, and was years away from absorbing his dad’s hard-earned wisdom, I refused to let any of those pesky details get in my way.

First, I made a list of the events of my childhood that taught me the most, the ones that made the biggest impressions, both good and bad. This exercise forced me to revisit many harrowing experiences such as batting zero in little league baseball, my chronic addiction to a blanket, my disastrously unsuccessful try-out for the role of Winthrop in The Music Man, and the time I mooned the entire sixth grade. I wanted to let my son know whatever hardship he might face; his father had already been there, learned something of value and survived. I also wanted to let him know about all the fun and joy I experienced as a child and the love my parents showed me.

After compiling my list, however, I realized it wasn’t going to be enough. What if, God forbid, I wasn’t around to tell him the full story behind each enumerated item? I couldn’t bear the thought so I decided to turn the list into a book of stories about my childhood. Over time, the project evolved into two books: one about my grade school years, How to Raise a Good Kid, and one about my junior and senior high school years, High School Dance.

Few times in life are more memorable than our school years. Humiliation, heartbreak and failure are abundant, and that’s on a good day. No matter who you are, coming of age is exciting, confusing and sometimes downright dangerous, and I’ve tried to capture both the agony and the ecstasy. My wife and I were fortunate enough to add a daughter to our family in the intervening years and my great hope is that she and her brother will someday read these stories, learn a few lessons, come to know their father even better, and above all, remember how much I love them.

Description: Jake Corby saved the world. Now, he's being asked to save the universe!

Corby is recovering from his last mission, enjoying life with his new family, when he’s sucked into a parallel universe with nothing but his clothes, his dog, and his eighty-three-year-old grandmother-in-law.

On this version of Earth, the dinosaurs didn’t go extinct and the world is ruled by a spacefaring civilization of dinobirds. If Jake wants to return home, he’ll need to not only survive but locate the  rulers of Earth so they can send him back.

Worse, Corby learns that a universe collision is imminent. Unless he can adapt to his new reality and work with the dinobirds to ward off that danger, his universe, as well as countless others, will cease to exist.

The Universe Next Door is a standalone book and may be understood without reading any of the other books in the series. However, for maximum enjoyment, consider reading Contact Us first.

Description: Trying to escape the oppression leading him to crime, drugs, and despair, 22-year-old William James rejects a teaching position offer at a prestigious Buffalo high school and moves to Mexico to find freedom in its beaches, mountains, and culture.

But soon, this freedom becomes oppressive as well as William finds himself unable to avoid the pull of the dark underbelly of the small town that, while beautiful, is ravaged by drug trafficking. He continues a downward spiral until he meets a complex and compassionate Mexican woman whose love inspires him to face the question he’s been avoiding: Is this trip a desperate search for life or a slow death?

A dark but humorous coming-of-age novel, UNDERSTANDING THE ALACRAN explores many of the questions that haunt young people searching for love and their place in this world, and offers a poetic look at the raw beauty and healing power of Mexico.

Deborah was a respected hospital manager until a tragedy destroyed her reputation. She has lost her career, her husband and even her name.

Luca wants to stay in the moment. For the first time in his life he has hope and a home. But a fresh start is hard on a zero-hours contract, harder if old voices fill your mind.

FACT:
Three days after Nikola Tesla contacted the U.S. War Department about his invention that would end World War II, he was found dead in the New Yorker Hotel. That same day, the Alien Property Custodian seized Tesla’s technical papers, and the FBI classified them as Top Secret. During the Cold War, his research papers mysteriously disappeared from a government program code-named “Project Nick” at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The project focused on developing the particle beam weapon that allegedly would have ended WWII.

FICTION:
Over seventy years later, one of Tesla’s inventions destroys a TILAC Corporation plant. The FBI assigns fledgling agent Savannah Kinlaw to interrogate TILAC’s disgruntled employees whose jobs have been offshored.

Savannah has never shed a tear, and smiling and laughing are learned responses. She was born with autistic spectrum disorder. However, her ASD left her with savant visual-spatial acuity, giving her the unique ability to visualize crime scenes and solve complex puzzles. Now, she must keep her disability in check to stop the terrorists.

London Road: Linked Stories by Tessa Smith McGovern (eChook Digital)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by TessaSmithMcGovern: GOLD MEDAL WINNER 2012 eLIT AWARDS, AMAZON BEST-SELLER

On the morning of her release from prison, the hottest day on record in England, Janice Bailey makes her way to a boarding house in London, and discovers a bizarre new world.

This moving collection of linked short stories begins with 'When Janice Bailey Walked', an award-winning story first published in the Connecticut Review, and continues with six more stories that take place on a single day, as told by the eccentric residents of Number 17, London Road, thus illuminating a little-known side of the most beautiful city in Europe.

Praise for LONDON ROAD: LINKED STORIES:

"...reminiscent of the writer who appears in one of the stories: the great Katherine Mansfield."

Cynthia Rogerson, winner, V.S. Pritchett Memorial Prize for a Short Story, 2008, UK

KIRKUS REVIEWS: In seven short stories, residents of a London boardinghouse reach moments of clarity. On London Road, lined with scruffy shops, stands No. 17, a detached red-brick Victorian that's been turned into a boardinghouse. Its residents tend toward hard luck and desperation: Janice is just out of prison; Mandy is on probation; Bitty has a good education, but is scarred by her mother's frequent abandonments; and Isobel is mentally unstable. Nora, the landlady, writes romance novels but has experienced little romance herself, and her daughter, Anna, is disgusted by Isobel's outbursts.
Their interconnected stories take place on a day of unusually hot weather, and focus on one resident at a time, with Janice's story told in two parts. In each, characters have a chance to make a leap of faith in other people, or in the future. In "The Walls of Buckingham Palace," for example, Nora--who adores the queen--reflects on an uneasy encounter with Len, her local pub's new landlord, who drank too much and frightened her off: "But every night since, her sleep had been disturbed by longings she thought had long since been vanquished." It takes queenlike courage for her to return to the pub, where she finds that Len is apologetic, sincere, and kind. Pointing to a framed photograph of the queen, he remarks, "You remind me of her, you do"; nothing, of course, could better gain her trust and win her over.
Though spare and fast-paced, McGovern's (Cocktails for Book Lovers, 2014, etc.) tales evoke entire biographies. She focuses on illuminative details and subtle, turning-point moments, as when Mandy, a young woman on probation, reacts to her mandatory book group's reading of Katherine Mansfield's 1922 short story "The Garden Party." It stokes her resentment, as she doesn't even know if people still give garden parties. Mandy makes plans to shoplift again, but something about the book group leader's hopefulness and the invitation to give her honest opinion sparks her determination to win--maybe a literary argument, or maybe more chocolate wafers. Tales with subtle, positive but never saccharine transformations that feel fully earned."

Nineteen Cuts by Ringo Gene Hayden

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by RingoHayden (author): Nineteen Cuts Ebook Giveaway! I am offering 50 Ebooks to LibraryThing readers. I would greatly appreciate an honest review on Amazon, Goodreads, and LibraryThing.

Description: My name is Thorn and I was dead once. My mind, my heart, and my spirit were as lifeless as a pond of bleach. So I carved into my slender wrists with a double-edged blade. Nineteen cuts in all, representing nineteen soul-destroying years I should have never been forced to endure. But I am proof that not even death can stop the bleeding.

I am very dead - purging every last drop of crimson fluid from my veins has that effect - but I am also still very alive. I'm just not...human anymore.

Suicide wasn't the end. It was just the little nap I took at the end of a shitty life. I got the luxury of waking up again. And that's when the fun began. The Freak Show. I was purged of the romantic delusion that death would heal me, because the beautiful and perverted Brehnn are coming for me. The cruel beings will gift me a nightmare only a diseased mind could fathom. And if they ever catch me, after they've had their fun, I won't be the guest at their dinner table. I'll be the entrée.

The largest stone was the rose hue of a sunrise. That one would be placed on the scale the day she married Drew Bishop. Even more brilliant but a wee bit smaller was the pink stone glistening with specs of silver. That one would bring Jennifer a baby girl named Brooke. The Keeper of the Scale smiled. Seeing such happiness laid out before him was pleasing to his eye.

Since the beginning of time, he and he alone has been challenged with the task of keeping each person’s scale in balance. A bit of happiness and then a small stone of sorrow, until the lives he has in his charge are measured evenly.

You might think such power is universal, but it is not. There are silver threads that crisscross the landscape of scales and connect strangers to one another. Not even the Keeper of the Scale can control the events traveling through those threads; the only thing he can do is try to equalize the balance once it has been thrown off. There is nothing more he can do for Jennifer; now he must find the thread that leads to Drew if he is to have the love he deserves.

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by maggiehasbrouck (author): A new giveaway to celebrate the launch of our new cover! Winners will receive an Amazon coupon.

Description: Seventeen-year-old Julia Turnbow’s mother gets paid to have sex; that’s just how it is. When Jules turns eighteen she‘ll follow in her mother’s footsteps and begin training to join the exclusive world of Philadelphia’s infamous Muriel Avenue Sluts. Anyway, that’s the plan.

But when Jules’s best friend Anna reveals that she’s being abused by one of Muriel Avenue’s gentleman clients, Jules’s world is knocked off its bearings. After a routine haircut and shave, Anna’s abuser falls to his death from a second-story balcony—and Jules is just one of two people who knows exactly what happened.

To complicate matters, Jules dives head first into a friendship with the daughter of the dead man. Greta’s a train wreck: she’s charming, unpredictable, and has one too many questions about Muriel Avenue. Then, Jules puts all of Muriel Avenue at risk with an ill-timed slip of the tongue and she finds herself wanted by the FBI. Running from everything she’s ever cared about, all Jules wants is to get back to the people she loves.

Complete with duct tape, wasp spray, and a healthy dose of sexual tension, Muriel Avenue Sluts is a coming of age story with a dark edge and a distinctly feminist perspective.

Offered by alexanderpeterdukes (author): This book is available as ebook only in epub, mobi and PDF formats.

Description: In recognition of the global reality of religion, which is part of the human condition, this is a book about God - not a supernatural God, nevertheless, a God that is both super and natural - in fact a God of Reality, including a moral dimension, relevant for the future as well as today. Consequently, rather than contributing to the endless arguments for or against the existence of the God of Tradition, it is a book that endeavours to highlight the divine and the godly in many areas of human activity. Alexander Peter Dukes is a barrister-at-law, and a member of the Inner Temple at the Inns of Court in London. Following a career as a constitutional lawyer, he is now a writer of aphorisms on a wide variety of subjects.

Offered by johnroseauthor: I need your feedback. It's my first book. You can request a mobi, epub, or PDF copy. Reviews on Amazon (when possible) are requested but not required (I'll be pleased! :) )

Description: Rise and Fall of a poor man is a tragicomedy inspired by real cases. It tells the story of a poor, nearly illiterate boy named Alexander Baum, who grew up in a street where crime and poverty went hand in hand and who one day, thanks to football, became a multimillionaire hero of the masses.

Alexander was too much of a restless spirit and could not handle all the money, fame, vanity and opportunists. His days were spent training, on team retreats, travelling, playing and doing commercials and photo shoots. His little free time was spent on luxury and extravagance, in the company of false friends and professional model Joanna Pasteur, with whom he married without first ascertaining whether she was trustworthy.

After a decade of great success came the end of his career, the loss of income, tax burdens and a divorce that cost him millions. A fatal combination that quickly ruined Alexander, who again had to fight for a dignified existence.

Will he be able to turn his life around? This book has a surprising ending!

Description: King John is the only English king known as ‘the Bad.’ However, was he really any worse than the other medieval kings? King John:Two-Time Loser, traces this king’s life and troubled reign from his childhood in France to his death nearly fifty years later in 1216.

As the fourth and youngest son of King Henry II, John is not expected to become king. He is contemptuously nicknamed ‘Lackland’ and is not trained for the monarchy. However, despite all odds, after big brother Richard dies in battle, John becomes King. Now he has to prove himself by being strong and standing up to his French overlord, Louis VII. Unfortunately he fails and also loses much of his French territory. In addition, John is accused of womanizing and of murdering his young nephew, Arthur - a potential rival to the throne. At home, John becomes embroiled in a nasty power-struggle with Pope Innocent III which causes England to be excommunicated.

Following these failures, the barons revolt and John is forced to agree to their demands spelled out in Magna Carta. Civil War then breaks out and John dies alone and unlamented knowing that he has lost both his English and French kingdoms.

The Art of Health: Simple and Powerful Keys for Creating Health in Your Life by Aarti Patel (D2 Books)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by Apatelnd (author): I'm a naturopathic doctor who wrote a book about how to make health simpler, more artful, enjoyable, creative, and long-lasting. In other words, you can read how to make it yours rather than relying on the mainstream healthcare industry to "fix" it or "perfect" it. I've always had patients say in my office, "I just haven't been feeling like myself." This book explores why this is a common feeling for people in modern society, how health symptoms can be tied to this feeling, and what to do about it. I'm giving copies away because the information presented can be valuable to any reader, and it will help you picture and create a healthy life where it matters most--right at home.

Description: The Art of Health is a fresh and revolutionary approach to health care that teaches you how to take charge of your own health and avoid getting caught up in the expensive, circuitous, fear-based, and often ineffectual medical system. It seeks to highlight what is often overlooked, which is that you, the individual, can be your own best source of vitality by tapping into your innate ability to create a healthy life. Dr. Patel draws on her own experiences treating patients, who have achieved significant improvements in their health and quality of life by following the guidelines covered in this book.

The business of mainstream medicine is getting rich off of Americans who are suffering from poor health and chronic conditions. Prescription drug spending in our country was about $457 billion in 2015, as reported by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. In addition, the 2012 National Health Interview Survey, conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, showed that Americans spent $12.8 billion on out-of-pocket natural product supplements. These amounts only reflect what is spent on medicine itself, not to mention exorbitant costs for visits to see medical or alternative care providers and other associated procedures.

Meanwhile, a 2009 issue of The Archives of Internal Medicine reported that the risk of developing common chronic disease goes down by as much as 80 percent from simply following a healthier lifestyle. Where can people go for in-depth guidance on how to improve their lifestyles when a typical health care visit is only 10-15 minutes long? The goal of mainstream medicine and the goal of individuals who want to be healthy are often at odds, and have been for a long time. There are so many simple things we can do and learn for ourselves that will increase quality and longevity of life, yet these things are often overlooked in favor of quick fixes, "cures," fads, and over-reliance on the medical system.

The Art of Health bypasses these sales pitches of mainstream and alternative health care to bring health back to where we live—life itself. It helps you develop more artful, simple, and effective means toward a healthier lifestyle that is more in tune with your body and who you are. The book also presents a creative approach instead of making health into a formulaic chore or burden. The featured recommendations in this book are not extreme, costly, torturous, or promising of miracle results. Yet they can significantly help prevent illness or improve the symptoms of an existing illness, and potentially even reduce dependence on pharmaceutical drugs or other treatments. Most importantly, they can improve overall quality and enjoyment of life.

Simple yet powerful, this book utilizes the metaphor of health as a work of art, and will help to free up your mind and body by providing a solid blueprint for turning your life and health into your very own creative masterpiece. The Art of Health will introduce you to an innovative approach toward health care, including topics such as:

-How to pay better attention to your body and its signals
-Why understanding how chronic symptoms are interrelated is a key to healing
-The importance of choosing long-term health instead of quick fixes
-How both conventional and alternative medical systems don't have all the answers
-The power of the mind in supporting real health
-The part that excess fear plays in health
-How unrealistic expectations can be an obstacle toward better health
-Why labels in health care can be limiting
-How to picture and live the health that you want
-Using your unique creative vision in getting healthy
-Allowing your natural vitality to shine through and guide you toward the life you deserve
...and more

On the Run by Izai Amorim (Izai Amorim)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by izaiamorim (author): Enter for a chance to win an eBook copy of On the Run in EPUB or MOBI format.

Description: New York City, early 1990s: a young, rich, and well-educated Central American man on the run from the police and Colombian drug dealers. He is accused of crimes he didn’t commit. Ready to do what it takes to survive, Pablo ironically embraces the very drug trade that threatened his life in the first place. Who is he? What is he really capable of? The question of identity is at the heart of On the Run. More than a contemporary story of survival, it’s a journey of self-discovery.

Pablo’s voice is funny, sometimes mean and merciless. He moves with nightmarish ease from recounting his adventures to recollecting his early life. Not always politically correct, On the Run gives you an insightful, twisted, humorous, and often disturbing view of conflicting worlds and beliefs: North and Latin America; black, brown, and white; rich and poor; rational and esoteric – and shows how they mix, match, and clash.

A Mind for Numbers: How Excel at Math & Science (Even If You Flunked Algebra) by Barbara Oakley (Jeremy P. Tarcher/Penguin)

Offered by RoeschLeisure: Discard from library collection. Trade paperback in good condition.

Description: Whether you are a student struggling to fulfill a math or science requirement, or you are embarking on a career change that requires a new skill set, A Mind for Numbers offers the tools you need to get a better grasp of that intimidating material. Engineering professor Barbara Oakley knows firsthand how it feels to struggle with math. She flunked her way through high school math and science courses, before enlisting in the army immediately after graduation. When she saw how her lack of mathematical and technical savvy severely limited her options—both to rise in the military and to explore other careers—she returned to school with a newfound determination to re-tool her brain to master the very subjects that had given her so much trouble throughout her entire life.

In A Mind for Numbers, Dr. Oakley lets us in on the secrets to learning effectively—secrets that even dedicated and successful students wish they’d known earlier. Contrary to popular belief, math requires creative, as well as analytical, thinking. Most people think that there’s only one way to do a problem, when in actuality, there are often a number of different solutions—you just need the creativity to see them. For example, there are more than three hundred different known proofs of the Pythagorean Theorem. In short, studying a problem in a laser-focused way until you reach a solution is not an effective way to learn. Rather, it involves taking the time to step away from a problem and allow the more relaxed and creative part of the brain to take over. The learning strategies in this book apply not only to math and science, but to any subject in which we struggle. We all have what it takes to excel in areas that don't seem to come naturally to us at first, and learning them does not have to be as painful as we might think!

Teaching for Critical Thinking: Tools & Techniques to Help Students Question Their Assumptions by Stephen D. Brookfield (Jossey-Bass)

Offered by RoeschLeisure: Hardback in good condition.

Description: While notions of what constitutes critical thinking vary, educators, politicians, and employers all agree that critical thinking skills are necessary for well-educated citizens and a key capacity for successful employees. In Teaching for Critical Thinking, Stephen Brookfield explores how students learn to think critically and what methods teachers can use to help.

In his engaging, conversational style, Brookfield establishes a basic protocol of critical thinking that focuses on students uncovering and checking assumptions, exploring alternative perspectives, and taking informed actions. The book fosters a shared understanding of critical thinking and helps all faculty adapt general principles to specific disciplinary contexts.

Drawing on thousands of student testimonies, the book identifies the teaching methods and approaches that are most successful when teaching students to think, read, and write critically. Brookfield explains when to make critical thinking the classroom focus, how to encourage critical discussions, and ways to reach skeptical students. He outlines the basic components required when reviewing a text critically and shows how to give highly specific feedback.

The book also addresses how to foster critical thinking across an institution, beginning with how it can be explained in syllabi and even integrated into strategic plans and institu-tional missions. Brookfield stresses the importance of teachers modeling critical thinking and demonstrates himself how to do this.

Crammed with activities and techniques, this how-to guide is applicable in face-to-face, online, and hybrid classrooms of all sizes. Each exercise includes detailed instructions, examples from different academic disciplines, and guidance for when and how to best use each activity. Any reader will come away with a pedagogic tool kit of new ideas for classroom exercises, new approaches to designing course assignments, and new ways to assess students' ability to practice critical analysis.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by TimBishop4 (publisher): "Packed with zest, adventure, and love, Wheels of Wisdom offers an unusual combination of joyous living and an appeal to grab each moment and make it count. A great read for those who enjoy a virtual trip with some intriguing insights." -- Lisa Lickel, author of The Last Detail

Description: When we returned from our third long-distance, self-supported bicycle tour, we had accumulated so many unique and compelling stories that we had to share them with others. Our first life lessons compilation, Wheels of Wisdom, brings these "aha moments" from the road to life.

Publishers Weekly and Bookbub must have seen something they liked, because they chose to stand behind our book and let others know about it. So did a New York Times bestselling author, several nonprofit CEOs, and a head coach in Division I college basketball. Publishers Weekly dubbed the book "a road map for life." And according to Bookbub, "Tim and Debbie learned unforgettable lessons of faith that can improve anyone's way of thinking!"

Wheels of Wisdom will inspire you, feed your soul, and challenge you. It will also entertain you and make you smile. You can't read this book without thinking deeply about your own circumstances, reexamining your perspective, and discovering new ways to overcome obstacles. Expect to come away with a renewed mind and new motivation to tackle your own journeys in life.

If you enjoy adventure and what it can teach you about life, this book is for you. As hope coaches on Dawson McAllister's "TheHopeLine" and first-time newlyweds in our 50s, we bring our own special brand of hope to our writing. Wheels of Wisdom is a "seeker's devotional" from two Christians who know how to relate to people—whether they are believers or not.
