***
As reviewed by HarperCollins:
NEVERDARK is a charming fairytale - adventure for children of all ages. It is a traditional tale, but it certainly doesn’t feel old-fashioned. This is in large part due to the vivacious writing and the very engaging authorial voice.

I found NEVERDARK a really enjoyable read. The writing style feels quite effortless, and the story romps along at a fantastic pace. Princess Fiera’s world really came to life.

To Rule This Broken Earth by Joseph Garraty (Ragman Press LLC)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by JosephGarraty (publisher): I will be happy to provide winners with copies of the book in pdf, epub, mobi, or other electronic format of their choice. Reviews greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Description: The trouble with the various rulers of the earth is that they're nearly all wizards, and the trouble with wizards, if you ask Dave Valdman, is that every one of 'em is crazier than a two-headed ferret. Dave is plenty happy staying beneath their notice, staying on the move, and delivering mail and the occasional cart of potatoes. But when Dave rescues a fugitive priest from the soldiers of an infamous warlord, he is drawn into the kind of conflict he's spent his whole life avoiding.

The priest, Father John Mallory, knows that war is brewing. As the local despots gear up for a surprise attack on the city of Crosse, Dave is in a position to get Mallory and his knowledge into the hands of people who could save some lives with them. That only draws him deeper into the conflict, and before long Dave finds himself acting as a go-between among the various kings, rulers, and military leaders, desperately employing any stratagem he can come up with to keep his friends alive and the body count low.

Magister Patricia Larsen, the instigator of the coming conflict, doesn't view herself as a warlord. Her domain lies out at the edge of the habitable lands, in a place where, without magic and sacrifice, the corn grows backward into the ground and the cattle speak in strange tongues. She has united the local wizards to strike at Crosse, in the hope of carving out a livable section of territory for her people. But Magister Larsen's new alliance is unsteady, and she's had to partner with some of the nastiest magic users on earth, leaders with their own ambitions and unholy desires.

As the land boils over into war, Dave finds his wit and his loyalty tested to the limits, and Magister Larsen begins to learn the steep cost of trying to rule this broken earth.

Description: "Genre-bending awesomeness for paranormal AND mystery lovers!" 4 stars. Susan Gottfried, Trevor's Song.

“A novel with many layers that go far beyond a simple urban fantasy story. On one level, it is a crime story that also has the obligatory love triangle that seems to go with Paranormal Romances. On the other level when looking deeper, it is also a story commenting on oppression and segregation.” 5 stars. Ken, Paperlessreading.com

“A fresh new outlook on the supernatural.” 5 stars. Kami Bravo.

“It has great character development, a fantastic plot, and steamy love interests. It's unpredictable; it has great pacing; and it clearly had a proficient editor. I thought it was fantastic and I can't wait to read the next installment.” 4 1/2 stars. Jen, RedHotBooks.com

“A mystery, supernatural, and romance novel all mixed up into one deliciously decadent treat!” K. Nicole, Glintoflightblog.com.

Since the 1970s humans have forced supernaturals to live in caged cities. Silver brands embedded in their foreheads identify them by species: a full moon for Vampires, a crescent moon for Shifters, a pair of wings for Fairies, and the list goes on, for each supernatural species has been tagged and categorized by humans.

Lanore Vesta is marked with a silver X, the brand of Mixbreeds, second-class citizens shunned by society. She stays to herself, revealing her ability to create fire only during emergencies. All she wants to do is graduate college and stop having to steal to survive. But when she stumbles upon a murder in progress, she catches the attention of a supernatural killer. Now all she wants is to stop finding dead bodies in her apartment.

Enlisting help from her Were-cheetah ex-boyfriend MeShack and a new mysterious friend named Zulu, she is steered through the habitat’s raunchy nightlife. But their presence sometimes proves to be more burden than help, as they fight for her attention.

While the corpses pile up, and the scent of blood fills the air, Lanore is left wondering: will she find the psycho or die trying?

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by JohnnyRay (author): This is in e-book form only. It is self published on sites like Amazon and smashwords where I would love to have some reviews.
I self published this novel for some various obvious reasons--it scares all agents.
Do I hate agents? Absolutely no. Some of my best friends are agents. This is a story that would simply not go away until I wrote it. It is an intense thriller with a lovely romance weaved inside of it.
I hope you love it.

Description: After sleeping with a literary agent, shouldn't you expect more than a form rejection letter?

To someone else, the rejection letter might be perceived as a simple piece of correspondence. But when Amy, who suffers from bipolar disorder receives a form rejection letter from Edward, an agent she had an affair with at a recent convention, she takes the rejection as both personal and professional—in short—a declaration of war.
Amy quickly embarks on a plan to get revenge by destroying Edward’s literary agency. However, Amy is soon not the one to be feared the most. Her actions create a copycat, a serial killer, who targets literary agents and viciously murders them. Living with the knowledge she has created a monster, a serial killer, is one thing, while doing nothing to stop the madness is another. But how could she track down a killer when she has no training in such? Thinking like a mad man might be the only way—but could she go there and survive herself?
When the winds of fate rekindle the romance with Edward, thus making him the next target—she really has no choice but to help the FBI. But will she be too late?

If Tears Were Wishes And Other Short Stories by Ruth Nestvold

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by Ruth.Nestvold (author): I will provide winners with copies of the book in pdf, epub, and mobi formats. Reviews in exchange would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Description: Three fantasy short stories by Ruth Nestvold

"Feather and Ring" - A game designer is on business in Taiwan, attempting to pull off the commercial deal of her lifetime. Her husband is leaving her, their company is on the verge of bankruptcy, and it looks as though a hostile takeover may ruin them. But luckily for Lindsay, magic lurks in the streets of Taipei, hidden between the skyscrapers and the constant traffic.

"Woman in Abaya With Onion" - A young woman visiting Egypt is pitted against far more than mere cultural differences when she begins to be visited by violent visions from the past.

"If Tears Were Wishes" - "The smell of industrial strength cleansers was laced with the smell of urine. In the back of her mind, through the pain and anger and fear, Brooke registered that the girls' bathroom didn't smell this way, pungent behind the clean, the traces of decades of boys and young men missing the urinals impossible to get out of the walls and the floor. The gag in her mouth tasted like dusty cotton.... She could tell from the third boy's expression that he would have hit her too if not for the vials he held. Vials which held a fortune. The rarest substance in the world: her tears."

Description: What would you do if your Mormon stepfather pinned you down and tried to cast Satan out of you? For thirteen-year-old Ingrid, the answer is simple: RUN.

For years, Ingrid has begged her freewheeling dad to let her join him on the road as a tool-selling vagabond to escape the suffocating poverty and religion at home. When her devout Mormon mother marries Earl — a homeless Vietnam vet who exploits the religion’s male-dominated culture to oppress and abuse her family—she finally gets her wish. Ingrid spends the next few summers living on the margins while hustling tools with her dad and his slimy, revolving sales crew. He becomes her lifeline and escape from Earl. But when her dad is arrested, she learns the lesson that will change her life: she can’t look to others to save her; she has to save herself.

Keeping the Dead by Aaron Polson (Skull Salad Press)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by aaronpolson (author): I'm looking for readers willing to post a review of this horror/dark fiction collection at Amazon.com. The book will be available in popular ebook formats for review, but is currently on sale only at Amazon.

Description: This collection brings together some of the author's favorite horror stories from the past few years—stories which appeared in professional magazines (e.g., “Wanting It” from Shock Totem) and others which appeared in little-read anthologies (e.g., “Keeping the Dead” from Fear of the Dark). As the title story indicates, death is at the center of these dark tales. Death and the dead.

The fear of death is persistent. It can be a monster. But fates worse than death abound. These stories are not simple shocks, basic cut-and-slash horror which leaves a reader panting but unsatisfied. These stories sleep with the cold, impersonal knowing which dwells inside us all—a knowing that death waits, the unknown is coming. It’s close. It’s just beyond the door.

Come inside for a little while. Read a few stories and set your Kindle aside. Tell yourself the world is good and whole and full of life.

I dare you.

Lords of Dyscrasia by S. E. Lindberg (IGNIS Publishing LLC)

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by SELindberg (author): Looking for horror-fantasy readers willing to crawl through the Underworld. Reviews desired. Due to the illustrations, files sizes are ~10MB (PDF, ePub, Mobi available). Cheers, S.E.Lindberg (the author)

Description: Pulp Sword and Sorcery for Horror fans. For Mature Readers (not Young Adults).
5/5 Stars "... there are few, if any, novels comparable to this one... The pace is nearly breathless... makes the majority of current popular fantasy fiction read like recipes by comparison... highly recommended, though not for the faint of heart." — ForeWord Clarion Reviews

Historically, dyscrasia referred to any imbalance of the four medicinal humors professed by the ancient Greeks to sustain life (phlegm, blood, black and yellow bile). Artisans, anatomists, and chemists of the Renaissance expressed shared interest in the humors; accordingly, the scope of humorism evolved to include aspects of the four alchemical elements (water, air, earth and fire) and psychological temperaments (phlegmatic, sanguine, melancholic and choleric). In short, the humors are mystical media of color, energy, and emotion; Lords of Dyscrasia presents them as spiritual muses for artisans, sources of magical power, and contagions of a deadly disease. Lords of Dyscrasia explores the choices humans and their gods make as this disease corrupts their souls, shared blood and creative energies.

Offered by CourtneyVail (author): Smashwords coupon will be given to winners. eBook available in all formats.

Description: Seventeen-year-old Majesty Alistair wants police to look further into her father's fatal car wreck, hopes the baseball team she manages can reclaim the state crown, aches for Derek...or, no...maybe Alec...maybe. And she mostly wishes to retract the hateful words she said to her dad right before slamming the door in his face, only to never see him again.

All her desires get sidelined, though, when she overhears two fellow students planning a church massacre. She doubts cops will follow up on her tip since they're sick of her coming around with notions of possible crimes-in-the-works. And it's not like she cries wolf. Not really. They'd be freaked too, but they're not the ones suffering from bloody dreams that hint at disaster like some crazy, street guy forecasting the Apocalypse. So, she does what any habitual winner with zero cred would do...try to I.D. the nutjobs before they act.

But, when their agenda turns out to be far bigger than she ever assumed, and even friends start looking suspect, the truth and her actions threaten to haunt her forever, especially since she's left with blood on her hands, the blood of someone she loves.

Heck, she's practically living the American Dream. While at a music industry convention for work, her life goes from status-quo to “Oh, no!” with one fated meeting.

Claire meets Bette, a captivating Italian woman with a haunted violin; an instrument that can only be played by the supernaturally gifted. Bette, a vampire with an eye on Claire's untapped talents, tries to turn her into one of the undead. Only it doesn't appear to have worked, at least not one-hundred percent.

While figuring out what fate has planned for her, Claire must also create a marketing campaign off-the-cuff for a Girl-centric guitar company, survive her first strip club visit, and fake being a violin virtuoso in front of thousands. She turns to Bette and her Vampy-friends for help, but trusting them with her life may not be the smartest decision she’s ever made.

Kill Me, the first work in the Blood Chord series, is a full-length paranormal novel of approximately 70,000 words.

Rex Randall and the Jericho Secret by Vince Carter

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by VinceCarter (author): This giveaway is offered in exchange for a review on Amazon. Of course, if you would like to put a review anywhere else as well, it would be most appreciated.

Winners may receive their copy in one of the following formats: MOBI/PC, EPUB, or PDF.

I hope you enjoy the book. Thank you.

Description: The ladies say "Move over James Bond. Welcome to the 21st century."

Rex Randall is the world famous author, known for his Incognito series of books and movies. His main character, Jason Hendrix, has a loyal following around the world, eager to read about his next exploits. This is especially so, since it is widely known that his life is modeled on the real lifestyle of Rex.

It is an unusual lifestyle, only dreamed of by most. That’s because, in real life, Rex lives with five beautiful women in a polyamorous, non-monogamous relationship. It is also a luxurious lifestyle, fueled by the enormous wealth generated by all those books and movies. They want for nothing and enjoy the many pleasures of life. They work hard, play hard, and rest easy.

In his series of thriller books, Rex’s alter ego, Jason, is a chameleon-like investigator that assumes numerous identities to pursue his assignments. In order to give the stories an increased level of realism, Rex spends countless months, himself, thoroughly researching key elements of the story concept by accepting assignments in real life and donning various cover identities.

Then, with exacting detail, Rex would be able to convert his actual experiences into an exciting series of scenes for Jason in the novels. It is the distinguishing factor that gives his books that air of authenticity, no matter how unusual the premise.

In preparation for his next novel, Rex and his five female loves, engage in their reality based research by going undercover and posing as security consultants to the U.S. Secret Service. In the process, they discover the Jericho Secret.

This secret, unknown even to the Secret Service, is so explosive that, if revealed to the world, could put the President of the United States in mortal jeopardy.

Offered by alanorloff (author): I'm giving away 25 Smashwords coupons for a free copy of the ebook suspense novel FIRST TIME KILLER.

Description: In shock radio, nothing is too far over-the-top in the pursuit of ratings.

Not even murder.

During his twenty-six-year career, D.C. radio talk show host Rick Jennings steered clear of outrageous radio. Wasn’t his thing. So when WTLK execs tap him for the Afternoon Circus to land a lucrative satellite deal, Rick struggles to maintain his standards—and his dignity. A chilling call (“I’m a long-time listener, first time KILLER.”) leads to the discovery of an intern’s arm in a trashcan. Rick spars with the “First Time” killer over the airwaves. The police are stymied. Ratings skyrocket. And First Time continues to knock off members of the Circus, phoning in to gloat afterward.

In a world of psychics and poseurs, crazy deejays and crazier callers, it’s up to Rick to bring First Time down before more people perish.

Olga - A Daughter's Tale by Marie-Therese Browne

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by olgasdaughter (author): In 1994, my mother, Carmen Browne, was admitted to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, UK, seriously ill. As she slowly recovered, I realized that, had she died, so too would the chance of my finding out about her past, her family in Jamaica and, of particular importance to me, who my father was, information she had resolutely refused to share with me. So, I decided to find out for myself.

My first discovery was that my mother’s real name was Olga Browney, born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica and one of eleven children from a close-knit, coloured Catholic family. A kind, naïve and gentle girl, my mother arrived in London in 1939, to stay with a malevolent, alcoholic aunt and intending to stay for only six months. However, world events, personal tragedy and malicious intent all combined to prevent her from returning home to Kingston.

Written with diary entries and letters, "Olga – A Daughter's Tale" is based on a true story about cruelty, revenge and jealousy inflicted on an innocent young woman and about her moral courage, dignity, resilience and, in particular, love. It is the story of a remarkable woman who, because of circumstances, made a choice, which resulted in her losing contact with her beloved family in Jamaica. That is, until nearly half a century later, when her past caught up with her.

Description: A family saga based on a true story and written as a result of the author’s findings after researching her family history and heritage. A story about prejudice, identity and belonging and set in Jamaica and London amidst World War 11.

Winter at Monte Cassino by Stewart D. Blair (Amazon and Smashwords)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by Stewart_Blair (author): The author invites you to read his recently published novel of approximately 130,000 words. If you like it, he would be grateful for a favorable review left at Amazon. Thank you.

Description: ‘This is a story told by Lieutenant Patricia Hampton, a member of the U.S. Army Photographic Section and a uniquely educated classical historian, who is brought over by her godfather General Mark Clark to create a visual record of his advance north to liberate Rome, Italy in late 1943. It records the conflict that arises between them, as Patricia comes to realize that though she sees her job as building a faithful photographic history of his progress, he views it only as a means to produce the publicity he needs to get command of the Allied Invasion of France.
In a campaign that goes wrong from the outset, Patricia's experience quickly becomes far less about memorializing any military success, than of wondering whether she ever really knew her godfather for the desperate man he has somehow become. Faced with the increasing likelihood of him authorizing the bombing of Monte Cassino Abbey which blocks his intended line of advance, Patricia is soon forced to decide whether to believe him when he says it is occupied by Germans, or accept the words of the enemy general who assures everyone it is not.
Having discovered the truth for herself, she must then decide whether to passively watch the impending tragedy, or use her camera to somehow prevent it. Part coming of age story, this is also an adventure tale, as Patricia survives an assortment of ordeals in her pursuit of the truth. But out of the dreadful tragedy comes at least some redemption, as Patricia seizes her own one chance of being a light in the darkness by trying to rescue as many of the innocent civilians inside the Abbey as she can. And afterwards as she watches that Abbey burn, just like her we are all forced to reconsider our definitions of who some of the heroes in this war really were.’

Valentine's Cafe by Anthony Schmitz (Anthony Schmitz)

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by AnthonySchmitz (author): I'll be grateful for your time and effort if you are able to post a review here or at Amazon. A Smashwords coupon will be provided so that you can download the format of your choice.

Description: The higher powers send the God of Love, Victor Valentine, to a frozen northern wasteland. His mission: spread the love.

Valentine's strategy is to open a restaurant. The food and wine, the potions at Valentine's disposal, the music, the waiters — all of it is directed at inspiring libidinous feeling among the clientele. Valentine's partner in scheming is his chef, the towering and volcanic beauty, Elevana Natasha Demidova. Nats. Together they succeed too well in turning the cafe into a wildly popular destination.

Inevitably, Valentine and the former Russian Mafia moll launch a tempestuous relationship of their own. Betrayal isn't far behind. By then, love trouble is just one of Valentine's problems. The minister across the street is eyeing Valentine's Cafe as a site for his mega-church. Picketers are on the sidewalk, the city councilman is aligned against him, and even the Governor has reason to help bring Valentine down.

The conclusion is a showdown between Valentine, Nats and her mobster pals, the councilman, the governor and half the neighborhood, all within the richly appointed confines of Valentine's Cafe. In this novel, if not in life itself, everyone gets approximately what they deserve.

Times of Trouble a Christian fiction thriller by Cliff Ball (Smashwords)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by cliff1974 (author): Winners will get a coupon for the free download from Smashwords. If you enjoy the novel, a review on Smashwords, B&N, and Amazon would be greatly appreciated.

Description: In the near future, the U.S. government has turned into a tyranny as the government agencies known as the EPA and TSA grow with ever more power, taking away the liberty many Americans had known for over two hundred years. They’re joined by a government agency, the Health Administration, which was put together in the mid-2010′s to regulate healthcare.

Told in first person point of view, Brian Atwood, our main character, is a field agent for the FBI in Omaha. His work involves mostly cyber terrorism and actual cases of potential real world terrorism. Eventually, his wife gives birth to their third child, who has Down’s Syndrome, which does not please the Health Administration because there are rules and regulations set-up in cases like these to prevent “genetic freaks” as they like to call them, from sucking up a lot of Health Admin money. Because the Atwoods are born again Christians, they never considered aborting the baby, so now the Health people have to take him away to deal with the problem later.

Meanwhile, the Secret Service decides to recruit Brian to be the personal agent of POTUS due to his great work involving a case that dealt with terrorism that would’ve involved Offutt Air Force Base. Brian’s faith is tested every day as he deals with a man that has no morals from what Brian can see, and is tested even more when his wife finds out that she’s dying from a fast growing form of breast cancer. Trouble in the rest of the world occurs as Iran attempts to nuke Israel, which fails spectacularly, so Israel takes care of the problem. This brings condemnation from everyone, including the US, which takes the side of Iran.

When the re-election of POTUS doesn’t turn out the way he wanted it, he and his people declare the election nullified because of supposed “irregularities” with the ballots. POTUS claims that the new President-elect may take the seat sometime in the middle of next year, if everything looks to be sorted out. POTUS purges his staff of what he considers unloyal people, including Brian. At the same time, he loses his wife, but regains the son he thought he had lost.

Brian moves back to his family home in Nebraska, where we follow what happens as the country slowly falls apart. Events play out as Brian and his family sees the End Times approach.

On Opposite Tacks by Chester Brigham (Whale's Jaw Publishing)

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by ezchayr (author): As the author, I would like to get thoughtful reactions to a comparison of the lives of two real people in very different walks of life, in this case a famous artist and an intrepid sea captain.

Description: John Sloan, major American artist identified with the "Ashcan School," and Capt. Solomon Jacobs, schooner fisherman and ocean adventurer, were both in Gloucester, Massachusetts from 1914 until 1918. John Sloan, during five consecutive extended summers in Gloucester, was reinventing himself as an artist following the 1914 Armory Show, and was painting many of his finest works. Capt. Jacobs was winding down a colorful career of voyaging and enterprise, but was not yet ready to go gently. Then America entered World War I, and the Gloucester fleet was decimated by U-boat attacks. "On Opposite Tacks" explores the contrasts and parallels between the two men that shaped their differing responses to life and war.

Offered by DANIELCURZON (publisher): from IGNA books
for literate reviewers who like dark comedy
We could also offer some e-books for Kindle if possible to offer both.

Description: Jane Austen did not die in 1817. Her head was miraculously preserved at a Cryonics facility in Zurich, Switzerland (formerly Swisserland). Recently discovered (September 10, 2010), the famed authoress has been revived and has returned to reside in her beloved England and at last begun a new novel, entitled Regency Scenes of Dissipation and Vice.
However, the burning literary question is can she finish her novel when her tranquility, her civility, and even her very life are threatened by the contemporary dangers surrounding her at rented Austen House. These include Hans-Axl, her neo-Nazi care-giver, the Sharia-loving fundamentalists next door, blatant libertines everywhere, the filthy paparazzi hounding Miss Austen, and worse.
All she has to assist her are a butch lesbian amanuensis and a ninety-year-old American rare book dealer, and perhaps the Internet.
Told in e-mails, this book contains a tale that combines both quaint Regency charm and a good deal of modern edge.

Dreams of Gold by Jonathan Chamberlain (Long Island Press)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by elmgrove (author): I will be giving away 20 Kindle versions of Dreams of Gold (to read Kindles on non-Kindle devices download a free reader from Amazon). I am hoping that readers will review the book on Library Thing and copy reviews to Amazon or their preferred internet bookshop. I am the author of the book and I am giving these copies away as part of my book promotion campaign.

Description: Dreams of Gold is an ‘extremely funny’ (according to one reviewer) surreally comic novel set against the backdrop of the London 2012 Olympics (suitable for adults and Young Adults). A motley crew of disaffected athletes from many different countries come together at the Welsh farmhouse of poet Rowan Jones, who had been briefly Poet Laureate for the London Games (about 5 minutes). Then 'Anna' – a transsexual athlete - arrives with news of a bomb plot (organised by the crazed dictator Osmanakhian). With the help of an English butler, who is not all he seems, they manage to foil the plot and save the Games. And there is a final twist at the end of this tale. This novel touches lightly on a wide range of issues relating to the Olympics – making it very suitable for discussion.

The author (that’s me) will be doing a LibraryThing Author Chat the week starting April 30th.

Grace by T. Greenwood (Kensington Publishing)

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by Kensington (publisher): Kensington Publishing is offering 15 copies of T. Greenwood's latest extraordinary novel, GRACE.

Description: T. Greenwood’s extraordinary novels, deftly combining lyrical prose with heartrending subject matter, have earned her acclaim as a “family-damage specialist” (Kirkus). Now she explores one year in a family poised to implode, and the imperfect love that may be its only salvation.
Every family photograph hides a story. Some are suffused with warmth and joy, others reflect the dull ache of disappointed dreams. For thirteen-year-old Trevor Kennedy, taking photos helps make sense of his fractured world. His father, Kurt, struggles to keep a business going while also caring for Trevor’s aging grandfather, whose hoarding has reached dangerous levels. Trevor’s mother, Elsbeth, all but ignores her son while doting on his five-year-old sister, Gracy, and pilfering useless drugstore items.

Trevor knows he can count on little Gracy’s unconditional love and his art teacher’s encouragement. None of that compensates for the bullying he has endured at school for as long as he can remember. But where Trevor once silently tolerated the jabs and name-calling, now anger surges through him in ways he’s powerless to control.

Only Crystal, a store clerk dealing with her own loss, sees the deep fissures in the Kennedy family—in the haunting photographs Trevor brings to be developed, and in the palpable distance between Elsbeth and her son. And as their lives become more intertwined, each will be pushed to the breaking point, with shattering, unforeseeable consequences.

The modest ranch house where Callie Wyeth grew up looks just as she remembers it—right down to the well-worn sheets in the linen closet. But in the years since Callie lived here, almost everything else has changed. Her father, once indomitable, is in poor health. And Callie is a single mother with a beautiful little boy, Henry, who has just been diagnosed with autism.

Returning to this quiet New Hampshire community seems the best thing to do, for both her father and her son’s sake. Even if it means facing Linden Finch, the one she loved and left for reasons she’s sure he’ll never forgive. Linden is stunned that Callie is back—and that she has a son. Yet in the warm, funny relationship that develops between Henry and Linden’s menagerie of rescued farm animals, Callie begins to find hope. Not just that her son might break through the wall of silence separating him from the world, but that she too can make a new start amid the places and people that have never left her heart…

A Breath of Eyre by Eve Marie Mont (KTeen)

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by Kensington (publisher): Kensington Publishing is offering 15 copies of a new novel by Eve Marie Mont, A BREATH OF EYRE.

Description: In this stunning, imaginative novel, Eve Marie Mont transports her modern-day heroine into the life of Jane Eyre to create a mesmerizing story of love, longing, and finding your place in the world…
Emma Townsend has always believed in stories—the ones she reads voraciously, and the ones she creates. Perhaps it’s because she feels like an outsider at her exclusive prep school, or because her stepmother doesn’t come close to filling the void left by her mother’s death. And her only romantic prospect—apart from a crush on her English teacher—is Gray Newman, a long-time friend who just adds to Emma’s confusion. But escape soon arrives in an old leather-bound copy of Jane Eyre…

Reading of Jane’s isolation sparks a deep sense of kinship. Then fate takes things a leap further when a lightning storm catapults Emma right into Jane’s body and her nineteenth-century world. As governess at Thornfield, Emma has a sense of belonging she’s never known—and an attraction to the brooding Mr. Rochester. Now, moving between her two realities and uncovering secrets in both, Emma must decide whether her destiny lies in the pages of Jane’s story, or in the unwritten chapters of her own…

Derailed Memoirs of a Botched Hysterectomy - A True Story About Endometriosis by Jaimi Taylor (Aauvi House Publishing Group)

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by JaimiTaylor (author): This is a true story, a classic, a timeless piece. Endometriosis is the number 3 disease contracted by women and there is no cure...

Endometriosis affects more than 9,000,000 women in the U.S. and many more worldwide - what everyone needs to know! Doctors claim endometriosis is confined to the female reproductive organs, is non-cancerous, and can't kill you. However, in my case, left undiagnosed way too long, my endometriosis metastasized - transfer of disease from one organ or part of the body to another not directly connected with it - onto my bladder. Logically, if endometriosis spreads to other internal organs, organ failure can cause death albeit endometriosis an indirect cause.

Endometriosis awareness is my cause, thus, I am giving away a few books at a time to get the word out about endometriosis and ask that you write a review, save a life, and/or tell your friends. Thank you for your support!

Description: How does an outwardly healthy 47-year old woman’s “routine hysterectomy” become an 18-day ordeal spanning 2-hospitals, 4-surgeries, several near death experiences, and more than $400,000 in medical bills? DERAILED is a true story – one woman’s terrifying journey through a seemingly endless comedy of errors. The reader will find themselves immersed in the constant turmoil experienced by the unsuspecting patient, including cover ups, good doctors protecting bad doctors, and hospitals pitted against the other.

Written by a woman unwilling to give up, the author has done her homework, including scores of useful medical facts based upon subsequent research in areas, such as fibroids, cysts, endometriosis, blood transfusions, drugs, blood clots, bypass implants, and more – all things she endured during her so called “routine hysterectomy.” Follow Jaimi on Twitter @JTjaimitaylor. This book is available direct from the publisher at Aauvi House Publishing Group, a division of Aauvi Group, Inc. USA, 333 Santana Row #234, San Jose, CA 95128, (408) 216-0309, or visit www.AauviHouse.com or email her at jaimitaylor@yahoo.com.

Rest In Pizza by Chris Cavender (Kensington Publishing)

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by Kensington (publisher): Kensington Publishing is offering 15 copies of a cozy mystery by Chris Cavender, REST IN PIZZA.

Description: Cozy towns like Timber Ridge, North Carolina—the home of Eleanor Swift’s delectable pizzeria, A Slice of Delight—don’t take well to prima donna celebrities. So no one is particularly pleased when TV host and famous chef Antonio Benet roars into town for a book signing and manages to insult Eleanor, her deliciously saucy sister Maddie, and everyone else within earshot. Insults are one thing, however…but a cold dish of murder is quite another…
Eleanor knows she’s on the menu of suspects who would bury a kitchen knife between the rolling-in-dough chef’s shoulders. But so is Beth, the owner of the bookstore, who may have some deep secrets to dish. Or Benet’s personal assistant, who very well may have had it with pampering his blowhard boss… and may even have some pie-in-the-sky ambitions of his own. And then there’s the TV producer—is it true the crusty chef was bellowing about going to another network before he reached his premature expiration date?

With her freedom—and even her looking-good-for-a-minute-there love life—on the chopping block, Eleanor’s got a seriously full plate. The only way out of this mess is a pretty tall order: deliver the real killer before she finds a knife in her back.

Includes delicious pizza recipe!

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn [Robotic Edition] by Mark Twain (Diani & Devine Press. LLC)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by EttaDevine (author): Adventures of Huckleberry Finn [Robotic Edition] would love for people to know it exists! Thank you.
The website for our publishing and production company is http://DianiAndDevine.com
We successfully raised money on Kickstarter to publish this literary atrocity and got the best project video of the year.
We'd love to get these books out of our garage.
- @EttaDevine

Description: Huckleberry Finn was a boy with no home. Jim was a runaway robot in search of freedom. Together they embarked upon the adventure of a lifetime! Mark Twain's classic text has been a lightning rod for controversy since its first publication in the late nineteenth century, and has consistently been one of the most banned books in schools and libraries across the United States. In an effort to fight the censorship of this iconic piece of literature, editors Gabriel Diani and Etta Devine have removed every instance of the word "n-word" and replaced it with the word "robot." Complete and unabridged (except for bits here and there), with E.W. Kemble's original illustrations painstakingly altered by artist Denise Devine to include robots, this bold new edition makes Twain's timeless work accessible to a whole new generation of readers ... without being bogged down by what he wanted to say about racism.

"Mark Twain has been criticized for his use of the term "Robot" to describe the mechanically created people who worked as unpaid drudges. Some MechPeople regard the term as offensive. Other MechPeople, like myself, see it as important to understand the world in which our ancestors vied and toiled. And this telling of Huckleberry Finn and of Robot Jim and his quest for Freedom speaks to all of us: human and mechanical." - Neil Gaiman
Author of "American Gods" and noted Mechperson
"How do you challenge a wrong-headed bowdlerization of a great novel? Diani & Devine's response is inspired: suggest an even more preposterous one. In the spirit of some of the over-the-top satire in which Twain himself occasionally indulged, the Robotic Huck Finn is designed to get readers to see why "improving" the words of a writer as careful as Twain is such a terrible idea." - Shelley Fisher Fishkin

Forgiving the Unforgivable: The Power of Holistic Living by Master Charles Cannon (Select Books)

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by PaulaatAME: We are the publicity firm working with Master Charles Cannon to share his book on forgiveness with readers - it's a book that wants to help readers experience forgiveness.

About the author: Master Charles Cannon is a leader in the field of modern spirituality, a visionary and pioneer in the evolution of human consciousness. He founded Synchronicity Foundation for Modern Spirituality in 1983 and developed the High-Tech Meditation and Holistic Lifestyle experience which have helped transform the lives of millions worldwide. His speaking engagements include: the United Nations; the World Health Organization; the National Institutes of Health; Columbia, Oxford, Tel Aviv and Bombay Universities; Westminster Abbey and the Vatican.

Description: "You are holding in your hands a book that you will never forget. Ever. It will stun your mind, open your heart, and connect you directly with your soul. However, the most special aspect of this remarkable book is not what you will find in it, but what you will find in you after you read it.”
—from the afterword by Neale Donald Walsch,
author of Conversations With God

"Some lovely people met up with hate one day, and with love they responded. Every story of the human journey, every reflection on the appearance of evil, every admonition to triumph over hatred through the power of love—it’s all in here. This is a remarkable book.”
—Marianne Williamson, author of A Return to Love

In November of 2008 Pakistani Muslim terrorists attacked Mumbai. One of their targets, the 5-Star Oberoi Hotel, was where Master Charles Cannon, leader of the Synchronicity Foundation for Modern Spirituality in Virginia, and twenty-four of his international asso¬ciates were staying. During the ensuing 45-hour siege, four in the group were wounded and two were killed.

When rescued by SWAT teams and interviewed by the international media, Synchronicity survivors expressed immediate compassion and understanding toward the terrorists, repeating words of forgiveness, not accusation. This ignited a stunned curiosity throughout the world and a deluge of e-mail messages and phone calls. “I am inspired by your response,” people wrote. “How did you get to be the way you are?” And, “How can I learn to be that way too?” Forgiving the Unforgivable is the answer to those questions.

This book outlines what forgiveness must become in our catastrophe-prone world and how true, deep, and unqualified forgiveness can become instinctive—by learning and living what the author describes as “The Holistic Lifestyle.” As survivors retell the horrific moments of their ordeal, they also reveal the spiritual beliefs that enabled them to transcend and transform this terrifying experience. Their epic story is destined to become a source of inspiration and strength for millions.

Harper Madigan: Junior High Private Eye by Chelsea M. Campbell

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by Chelsea_Campbell (author): Winners will receive a free ebook copy in the format of their choice. Reviews are much appreciated!

Description: 7th grade detective Harper Madigan works alone. He doesn’t need the vice principal assigning him a new partner to keep him in line, especially a stuffed-shirt wannabe-journalist who totally cramps his style.

And he especially doesn’t need his troublemaker ex-girlfriend showing up out the blue and asking for his help. She’s accused of attacking the star of the school musical, and with her less-than-sparkling track record, she’s only one suspension away from getting expelled.

Only Harper believes she’s innocent, and now it’s up to him to prove it, even if it means making an enemy of the PTA mafia, risking his agency, and confronting the mistakes of his own dark past. But when his new partner insists on doing everything by the book, and his old nemesis – the one bully he can’t catch – starts harassing his clients, it’s going to take more than just detective work to solve the case.

Praise for Chelsea M. Campbell's The Rise of Renegade X:

"Damien's voice is snarky and delightful; get ready to cheer for a new type of hero."

-JULIE KAGAWA, New York Times Best-Selling author of THE IRON FEY series.

"Damien's voice conveys both sarcasm and uncertainty perfectly - he's a believable teenager in a ludicrous world. ... A witty tale older teens will appreciate."

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by EllenEkstrom (author): This is a modern romance, a less-than-cautionary-tale about the middle ages, a modern woman's issues with them, and written while I was starting mine. If you are interested in modern literature, romance and a story where everything happens for a reason and the heroine succeeds despite all odds, then this is your story - All the best, Ellen Ekstrom

Description: Violet Ellison is a woman who seemingly has it all - three adorable kids, a handsome, but distant husband and a home in a good neighborhood. The morning she finds a chess piece on the sidewalk, a knight on horseback, things start to change. While not one for fairy tales, Violet’s life takes a Cinderella turn and in finding the perfect dress for a society event, she runs into the perfect man – the crush she’s had since her teens. A family friend who reminds her of everything she’s been trying to forget suddenly returns, and Violet has some difficult decisions before her. Satellites Out of Orbit by chris wind (Magenta)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Offered by chriswind (author): Reviews are welcome but not mandatory.

Do note that Satellites Out of Orbit contains five previously published shorter collections: Thus Saith Eve, Soliloquies: the lady doth indeed protest, Deare Sister, UnMythed, and Snow White Gets Her Say.

Description: A collection of feminist poetry and prose pieces in five sections:

I. Epistles: epistles written by Eve, Cain’s wife, Noah’s wife, Delilah, the Queen of Sheba, Mary, and others – as if they were feminist

II. Myths: the myths within the myths revealed – what might Pandora, Circe, Penelope, Eurydice, Persephone, the Gorgons, and others have thought and done if they had not been the creations of a chauvinist patriarchy?

III. Letters: letters that might have been written by Lady Godiva, Milton’s daughter, Rubens’ model, Mozart’s mother, Freud’s wife, Plato’s students, and others – assuming a feminist consciousness

IV. Soliloquies: soliloquies delivered by Juliet, Ophelia, Lady MacBeth, Kate, Desdemona, Regan, Miranda, and others – protesting the role given to them by Shakespeare

V. Fairy Tales: the classic fairy tales retold – what would have happened if Gretel, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, and others had been strong and critical girls and women living today?

An extensive 50-page Appendix includes synopses of the original stories for readers who may be unfamiliar with the characters, as well as references to the material read by wind prior to and during the preparation of her re-visions (in her Note to the Reader, wind indicates that the work is “fiction catalyzed by fact”).

Satellites is at once a genre-busting collection of elegant and provocative prose and poetry, a solid work of research in women’s studies, a valuable resource for high school English teachers seeking new material for their Shakespeare and Mythology units, and a goldmine for actresses wanting fresh audition pieces.

I've Been Deader by Adam Sifre (I've Been Deader Publishing)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by Splinker (author): Looking for reviews and to generate interest. Big surprise.

The book's been compared to Shaun of The Dead, which is weird, since that's a movie. Besides, my book is better.

Description: Being undead never felt more alive. Fred's just an ordinary zombie until one day he learns a trick.

The undead had a good run at the beginning, but once the breathers get organized, it's only a matter of time before zombies go the way of pet rocks and sea monkeys. They need a hero. They need Fred. Fred is a natural dead leader with a flair for poetry and a fierce love for his son, Timmy. Unfortunately, as far as the undead are concerned, the only good Timmy is a dead Timmy.

Things look grim for the undead until Fred flies into a rage trying to make popcorn and discovers he has a talent for controlling zombies. Now the undead are organized and, like the unions, in a position to destroy America. Is there no one who can stop them? More importantly, do we want them to?

"I've Been Deader" tells its story through a series of short chapters designed to read like flash fiction. Today's readers want it fast, short and entertaining, and that's what I give them.

Stick around. We'll have some fun.

The Best Way: El Camino de Santiago by Bill Walker (CreateSpace)

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by PaulaatAME: We are the publicity firm working with Bill to share the story of his entertaining and enlightening trek to El Camino de Santiago.

About the author: Bill Walker was a Commodities Broker at the Chicago Board of Trade and London International Financial Futures Exchange for fourteen years. He is the author of Skywalker--Close Encounters on the Appalachian Trail (2008)and Skywalker--Highs and Lows on the Pacific Crest Trail (2010) He walked the Camino in both 2010 and 2011. In fact, he walks just about anywhere he possibly can. Walker, who is 6'11", is now working on a whimsical book on the subject of height.

Description: Since the times of Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin, Americans have headed off to the Old Continent of Europe on odysseys of self-improvement and fashion. But until recently, Americans have not chosen ‘the best way’—El Camino de Santiago. The Camino is a 500 mile trek from southern France, over the Pyrenees, to the medieval Catholic shrine in Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain where legend holds that the disciple, ‘James the Greater’ is buried. Approximately 500,000 pilgrims undertook this trek during medieval times.

In recent years, the Camino has surged back to prominence. Better yet, Americans are now joining the masses of Europeans and Asians on this eventful trek. Bill Walker (the 6’11” author of Skywalker) joined 200,000 other pilgrims in the ‘Holy Year’ of 2010 on the Camino. At his side was his wisecracking 18 year-old nephew, Gavin. The frat-boy dialogue between them is reminiscent of the towel-snapping banter between Bill Bryson and Katz in the bestselling outdoor narrative, A Walk in the Woods.
Along the way, they directly experience just how delightful the French can be (except, of course, when they’re being impossible). They also learn just why almost all Germans are model pilgrims, and vividly experience the tragi-glorious roots of the Spanish national character.

In The Sound of Caissons, Julia Crockett’s relentless quest to excel is revealed as the story of five generations of an Army family unfolds through the first three-quarters of 20th century America. At age six Julia imagines growing up to be a general, like Fort Sill’s post commander. When she shares this with her beloved grandfather, a retired major, he informs her girls can’t be soldiers. Years later, her father forbids her joining the WAAC at the outset of WWII, and she decides the only way to achieve the position and power she desires is to marry an ambitious lieutenant and ride his coattails. But shortly after a hasty marriage to Lt. Robert Wells, she meets Lt. David Morgan, and realizes she’s made a dreadful mistake. Through triumph, tragedy, and infidelity, the Morgan family serves from the U.S. to Tehran, to Berlin, and back again. The children become adults, and the men weather America’s conflicts in Korea and Vietnam.
Eventually David’s patience with Julia’s singular determination to see him with stars on his epaulets and their sons as West Point cadets, wears thin. Is the extraordinary love Julia and David share for each other strong enough to survive their conflicting visions? Filled with passion and engaging characters, this thought provoking family saga will keep you turning pages. It is not merely a love story.

There are at least three reasons why you might want to read this book:
1. you want to be an author;
2. you have already written a novel and want to publish it as an ebook;
3. you want to promote yourself as an author.

This book is a beginner’s guide on how to do the above. It isn’t a magic elixir for foolproof million copy marketing of your ebook. It is based upon the experiences of this author and a broad-based peer group.

I have to warn you right now, this is not going to be an easy journey. Less of a country stroll, more of a trek up Kilimanjaro. The good news is that almost anyone can trek up Kilimanjaro with the right support, appropriate equipment and a positive attitude. See you at the top.

Ruby’s top ten tips for ebook publishing
1. You’re going to need a good book, one you believe in, one that has your author’s voice. That unique voice communicates your individual talent as a writer.
2. Test your book on honest people before you consider releasing it. Make it the absolute best you can. Don’t regret, be proud.
3. Ready to publish? Forget about it until you’ve considered the following marketing steps 4 and 5. You can ignore them and still be successful. That will make you into a folklore hero whose name is on everybody’s lips, but they’re few and far between (and I’m not one of them).
4. You need a social networking platform. Ebook readers are internet users. That’s where you need to focus (and make sure you start that ball rolling before launching your ebook).
5. Brand is to an author what location is to real estate. Make your name your brand. Everything you do needs to enhance that brand. Exert caution at this point because, if you do it wrong, retracing your steps is difficult.
6. Now let’s publish. A cover, title and description that tells a potential reader what’s inside is worth reading. A digital manuscript that won’t cause that reader to trip over systemic errors in prose, grammar or format. If you baulk at any of this then pay someone who can do the uncomfortable parts for you (it’s less expensive than you might think).
7. Aim to build a readership that will provide reviews, recommendations and support. Don’t be precious about initial pricing.
8. Leverage your social networking platform to gradually increase exposure of your book. Use subliminal marketing and influence strategies when you enter into the mêlée of the marketplace.
9. Build your brand team. Remember at every step that each virtual friend, follower and reader is your team. Never alienate, even when in receipt of negativity. Radiate positivity and calm confidence. People don’t just read your ebook, they also digest your blog posts, forum comments, tweets, facebook updates, everything that you write on the internet. Those readers read, enjoy and recommend. Word of mouth sells ebooks. This is the key.
10. Are you writing the next book? Never stop writing creatively. Always have a project in the first draft or edit stages. Blogging, tweeting, chatting and whatever is new, all good but you are an author and you must write. Allocate time for making friends and marketing. Ring-fence time for creative writing. Do both, in parallel, with an element of self-discipline. A satisfied reader asks for more. The reader market is effectively infinite and so is their appetite for good books.

Read on. You’ll find useful and proven content in this book to help you with all of these ten tips.

Disposable People by Ezekel Alan (Ezekel Alan)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by Ezekel.Alan (author): I am very much interested in getting reviews and referrals. This is my debut novel, and the initial newspaper and blog reviews have been very encouraging.

Description: Ten year old Kenneth Lovelace often went to bed without dinner. Instead of feeling hunger, however, what he mostly felt was fear and shame, knowing that his family’s poverty was the reason he had no food. Kenneth also recalls his bitterness whenever his parents locked him out of their tiny, one-room house to act on their 'urge'. This was in the 1970s, when Jamaica's socialist regime was dragging the country into bankruptcy, and when an Old Timer had told him that he was cursed since birth.

Beginning with his earliest memories, “Disposable People” traces the life of Kenneth Lovelace, now a consultant living in the USA. After a string of failed marriages, bad relationships and other misfortunes, Kenneth looks back at his life in his old, hateful village with hopes of finding the roots of his latest tragedy. What comes out is a story of mischief and adventures, sex, prejudice, evil spirits, adversities and, progressively, violence.

Another Damn Newcomer by Audrie Clifford (Sunstone Press)

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by AudrieClifford (author): As the author, I'm hoping that you'll like my book and that you'll review it on Library Thing. Even if you don't like it, say so and tell me why. Constructive criticism is always helpful.

Description: This is not a great book, but it's a darn good book. And it's funny. There are a lot of laughs and maybe a few tears. In it, the author tells of moving to a small town where she and her husband do all they can to fit into the community. Despite one of them serving as Village Council-member (and later, as Mayor)there is still a perception of them as ones who will never completely fit in because they came from a different place. I, as the author have come to realize that this is a universal small-town problem. Persons who grow up together form a "tribal mentality" and non-tribal members are suspect.
The focus of the book is on the residents (mostly other damn newcomers) who become some of the best friends imaginable. Read more on Amazon.com.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by tchrofengl (author): As the author, I would very much like to give away copies of my novel, Task Force: Gaea -- Finding Balance, to readers of fantasy because I am eager to share my work. I welcome reviews posted here, Amazon, Goodreads, etc. I am offering five copies to you. :)

Description: During the age of Olympos, when a vengeful goddess shatters the Sacred Scales, both immortals and humans alike suffer. Apollo, the god of truth, goes from a glorious existence as The Shining One to a victim of Zeus’ wrath, and his journey makes him question his godhood, his role in the cosmos, and his views on humanity. Prophecy and the Fates direct his course, and he must make difficult, yet vital, choices.

Millennia pass, and Dan, Aleta, Brandon, and Sarah—four reluctant modern-day heroes gifted by ancient civilizations born of the gods—bound by prophecy, have to choose whether or not to save their world when it could mean they never existed. They must master their new powers while battling against incomprehensible forces from the Underworld and repairing the Sacred Scales, destroyed long ago. With the equilibrium between Order and Chaos unhinged, and the Olympian gods struggling to exist, these four must ally themselves with the United Nations to protect an endangered world, becoming the only group who can fight against metaphysical threats to the Earth, forging Task Force: Gaea.

Can mortals succeed where gods cannot go?

Offered by Zachgo (author): I am the author of The Rocking Horse. Current reviews have been encouraging and I’m anxious to receive additional feedback.

Description: Can a family that has been savagely ripped apart find healing and redemption? Are the mysteries hidden in the human heart destined to reveal themselves? The Rocking Horse, Gloria Zachgo's spellbinding suspense novel, charts the harrowing emotional journey of one family that is torn asunder, then magically drawn together again.

The Immortalists by Kyle Mills (Thomas and Mercer)

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by Violette62: I received 2 free copies from the publisher and just want to pass them on to others.

Description: Description from the cover blurb:

"What would you do to save the life of your child? Microbiologist Richard Draman thought he'd answered this question when he walked away from his career to focus on curing a genetic defect that causes his daughter to age at a wildly accelerated rate. Just when Richard and his wife Carly force themselves to recognize that eight-year-old Susie's time is running out, they receive an unexpected gift - startling new research into the fundamental secrets of life that could be the answers to their prayers.

When Richard is accused of stealing the research that was sent to him - he takes his family on the run, seeking out a retired special forces operative and old friend to help dig up the truth behind the controversial experiments. Determined to either save Susie's life or die trying, the Draman's plunge into a bloody conflict between two powerful factions vying for control of a discovery that could change the face of humanity."

The author followed the typical medical mystery formula which made it a great read. However, Mills also followed a suspense story formula which, for me, takes The Immortalists to a new sub-genre, medical thriller. The usual powerful competitors are present as well as new science. If you like medical mysteries, you will love The Immortalists. Mills is on a par with the other great medical mystery authors Robin Cook and Michael Palmer.

Description: A potential breakthrough discovery to reverse global warming . . . a series of unexplained sudden deaths in British Columbia . . . a rash of international incidents between the United States and one of its closest allies that threatens to erupt into an actual shooting war . . . NUMA director Dirk Pitt and his children, Dirk. Jr. and Summer, have reason to believe there’s a connection here somewhere, but they also know they have very little time to find it before events escalate out of control. Their only real clue might just be a mysterious silvery mineral traced to a long-ago expedition in search of the fabled Northwest Passage. But no one survived from that doomed mission, captain and crew perished to a man—and if Pitt and his colleague Al Giordino aren’t careful, the very same fate may await them.

Filled with the breathtaking suspense and audacious imagination that have become his hallmarks, this is a tour de force— further proof that when it comes to adventure writing, nobody beats Clive Cussler.

Cameron's Crossing by Philip McCutchan (St. Martin's Press)

Offered by RoeschLeisure: Hardback edition with dustjacket in great condition.

Description: McCutchan's 10 years at sea have resulted in nearly 90 naval adventure tales, including the Commander Shaw, Lieutenant Halfhyde and Commodore Kemp series, as well as the Donald Cameron books, of which this is the 14th. In February 1942, Cameron, Lieutenant-Commander in the Royal Naval Reserve, faces a treacherous North Atlantic crossing, Hitler's Luftwaffe and a Royal Navy captain who may be losing his marbles. When the cranky old skipper heeds a hunch to change course for the dangerous Denmark Strait, truly ferocious weather causes structural damage to his aircraft carrier. With the broached ship foundering and unable to navigate, the Captain unconscious and the senior officers lost, Cameron takes control—just in time to face the Luftwaffe. With Charon's boat pulling alongside, officers and enlisted men alike confront their private fears: one worries about who'll support his old sick parents if he dies, another wonders if his wife will forgive his hanky-panky with her sister. As usual, the stolid, intrepid Cameron soldiers along very ably, while McCutchan's spare prose smartly re-creates the lore and real lives of the British navy.

Convoy East by Philip McCutchan (Weidenfeld & Nicolson)

Offered by RoeschLeisure: Hardback edition with dustjacket in great condition.

Description: In his fourth appearance ( Convoy South ), Commodore John Mason Kemp shepherds a convoy from Britain to Alexandria and on to Ceylon. Troops for Montgomery's planned push in the desert and food for besieged Malta are the main responsibilities for the ex-liner captain, but a contingent of Wrens is also aboard the Wolf Rock . While aircraft carriers, the battleship Nelson and other naval vessels guard against the Nazis and Italians, four-square Kemp must deal with a pregnant—unmarried!—Wren and a Lothario First Officer. As usual, McCutchan's battle scenes are cool, graphic and authentic. Readers of earlier Convoy novels will expect the varied cast of clearly depicted characters, and wealth of historical, tactical and personal details. The book ends in Malta, so we may look forward to a continuation of this convoy.

Acts of God: The Unnatural History of Natural Disaster in America by Ted Steinberg (Oxford University Press)

Offered by RoeschLeisure: Hardback edition with dustjacket in great condition.

Description: Incredibly, the ten most costly catastrophes in U.S. history have all been natural disasters—seven of them hurricanes—and all have occurred since 1989, a period, ironically, that Congress has dubbed the Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction. Why this tremendous plague on our houses? While some claim that nature is the problem, in fact, as environmental historian Ted Steinberg explains, historically speaking, much of the death and destruction has been well within the realm of human control. Surveying more than a century of losses from weather and seismic extremes, Steinberg exposes the fallacy of seeing such calamities as simply random events.
Acts of God explores the unnatural history of natural calamity, the decisions of business leaders and government officials that have paved the way for the greater losses of life and property, especially among those least able to withstand such blows—America's poor, elderly, and minorities. Seeing nature or God as the primary culprit, Steinberg argues, has helped to paper over the fact that, in truth, some Americans are better protected from the violence of nature than their counterparts lower down the socioeconomic ladder. How else can we explain that the hardest hit areas have been mobile home parks and other low-income neighborhoods?
Beginning with the 1886 Charleston and 1906 San Francisco earthquakes, and continuing to the present, Steinberg spotlights the defective approach to natural hazards taken by real estate interests, the media, and policymakers. By understating the extent of storm damage in news reports and offering quick repairs and cosmetic solutions to damaged property, fundamental flaws in the status quo go unremedied, class divisions are maintained, and unsafe practices continue unquestioned. Even today, with our increased scientific knowledge, he shows that reckless building continues unabated in seismically active areas and flood-prone coastal plains, often at taxpayer expense.
Sure to provoke discussion, Acts of God is a call to action that must be heard before the next disaster hits.

The Sands of Valor by Geoffrey Wagner (Buchan & Enright)

Offered by RoeschLeisure: Paperback edition in good shape.

Description: Geoffrey Wagner has written something a bit more substantial here than the standard war novel. "The Sands of Valor" spends as much if not more time and effort on the characters and their inner lives than he does on his excellent descriptions of tank warfare in the North African desert, pitting the British 8th Army and the German Afrika Korps against each other and both against the desert. This is not a quick read nor is it packed from end to end with action and scenes of combat, which actually helps the work deliver a rather realistic presentation of the long periods of time with no combat punctuated by moments of intense action and even sheer terror that was especially linked to this period of the war.

ARENA ONE (Book #1 in the Survivor Trilogy) by Morgan Rice

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Offered by morganrice (author): I hope you enjoy! xo, Morgan

Description: “If you liked THE HUNGER GAMES, you will Love ARENA ONE.”
—Allegra Skye, Bestselling author of Saved

From Morgan Rice, #1 Bestselling author of THE VAMPIRE JOURNALS, comes a new trilogy of dystopian fiction.

New York. 2120. American has been decimated, wiped out from the second Civil War. In this post-apocalyptic world, survivors are far and few between. And most of those who do survive are members of the violent gangs, predators who live in the big cities. They patrol the countryside looking for slaves, for fresh victims to bring back into the city for their favorite death sport: Arena One. The death stadium where opponents are made to fight to the death, in the most barbaric of ways. There is only one rule to the arena: no one survives. Ever.

Deep in the wilderness, high up in the Catskill Mountains, 17 year old Brooke Moore manages to survive, hiding out with her younger sister, Bree. They are careful to avoid the gangs of slaverunners who patrol the countryside. But one day, Brooke is not as careful as she can be, and Bree is captured. The slaverunners take her away, heading to the city, and to what will be a certain death.

Brooke, a Marine’s daughter, was raised to be tough, to never back down from a fight. When her sister is taken, Brooke mobilizes, uses everything at her disposal to chase down the slaverunners and get her sister back. Along the way she runs into Ben, 17, another survivor like her, whose brother was taken. Together, they team up on their rescue mission.

What follows is a post-apocalyptic, action-packed thriller, as the two of them pursue the slaverunners on the most dangerous ride of their lives, following them deep into the heart of New York. Along the way, if they are to survive, they will have to make some of the hardest choices and sacrifices of their lives, encountering obstacles neither of them had expected—including their unexpected feelings for each other. Will they rescue their siblings? Will they make it back? And will they, themselves, have to fight in the arena?

ARENA ONE is Book #1 in the Survival Trilogy, and is 85,000 words.

Offered by RoeschLeisure: Advance Uncorrected Proof that made its way into the collection. Paperback edition in good shape with library cataloging/shelving labels marked out. It is a 2011 copyright, so a review seems appropriate.

Description: On an early spring morning in Richmond, Virginia, in the year 1885, a young pregnant woman is found floating in the city reservoir. It appears that she has committed suicide, but there are curious clues at the scene that suggest foul play. The case attracts local attention, and an eccentric group of men collaborate to solve the crime. Detective Jack Wren lurks in the shadows, weaseling his way into the investigation and intimidating witnesses. Policeman Daniel Cincinnatus Richardson, on the brink of retirement, catches the case and relentlessly pursues it to its sorrowful conclusion. As the identity of the girl, Lillie, is revealed, her dark family history comes to light, and the investigation focuses on her tumultuous affair with Tommie Cluverius.
Tommie, an ambitious young lawyer, is the pride and joy of his family and the polar opposite of his brother Willie, a quiet, humble farmer. Though both men loved Lillie, it’s Tommie’s reckless affair that thrusts his family into the spotlight. With Lillie dead, Willie must decide how far to trust Tommie, and whether he ever understood him at all. Told through accumulating revelations, Tommie’s story finally ends in a riveting courtroom
climax.
Based on a true story, The Reservoir centers on a guilty and passionate love triangle composed of two very different brothers and one young, naive girl hiding an unspeakable secret. A novel of lust, betrayal, justice, and revenge, The Reservoir ultimately probes the question of whether we can really know the hearts and minds of others, even of those closest to us.

Academically Adrift: Limited Learning on College Campuses by Richard Arum and Josipa Roksa (University of Chicago Press)

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by RoeschLeisure: Paperback edition with slightly warped cover. In very good condition. It is a 2011 copyright, so a review seems appropriate.

Description: In spite of soaring tuition costs, more and more students go to college every year. A bachelor's degree is now required for entry into a growing number of professions. And some parents begin planning for the expense of sending their kids to college when they're born.

Almost everyone strives to go, but almost no one asks the fundamental question posed by Academically Adrift: are undergraduates really learning anything once they get there? For a large proportion of students, Richard Arum and Josipa Roksa's answer to that question is a definitive "no."

Their extensive research draws on survey responses, transcript data, and, for the first time, the state-of-the-art Collegiate Learning Assessment, a standardized test administered to students in their first semester and then again at the end of their second year. According to their analysis of more than 2,300 undergraduates at twenty-four institutions, forty-five percent of these students demonstrate no significant improvement in a range of skills - including critical thinking, complex reasoning, and writing - during their first two years of college. As troubling as their findings are, Arum and Roksa argue that for many faculty and administrators they will come as no surprise - instead, they are the expected result of a student body distracted by socializing or working and an institutional culture that puts undergraduate learning close to the bottom of the priority list.

Academically Adrift holds sobering lessons for students, faculty, administrators, policy makers, and parents - all of whom are implicated in promoting or at least ignoring contemporary campus culture. Higher education faces crises on a number of fronts, but Arum and Roksa's report that colleges are failing at their most basic mission will demand the attention of us all.

Our Underachieving Colleges: A Candid Look at How Much Students Learn. . . by Derek Bok (Princeton University Press)

Offered by RoeschLeisure: Hardcover edition in great shape with no dustjacket.

Description: Drawing on a large body of empirical evidence, former Harvard President Derek Bok examines how much progress college students actually make toward widely accepted goals of undergraduate education. His conclusions are sobering. Although most students make gains in many important respects, they improve much less than they should in such important areas as writing, critical thinking, quantitative skills, and moral reasoning. Large majorities of college seniors do not feel that they have made substantial progress in speaking a foreign language, acquiring cultural and aesthetic interests, or learning what they need to know to become active and informed citizens. Overall, despite their vastly increased resources, more powerful technology, and hundreds of new courses, colleges cannot be confident that students are learning more than they did fifty years ago.

Looking further, Bok finds that many important college courses are left to the least experienced teachers and that most professors continue to teach in ways that have proven to be less effective than other available methods. In reviewing their educational programs, however, faculties typically ignore this evidence. Instead, they spend most of their time discussing what courses to require, although the lasting impact of college will almost certainly depend much more on how the courses are taught.

In his final chapter, Bok describes the changes that faculties and academic leaders can make to help students accomplish more. Without ignoring the contributions that America's colleges have made, Bok delivers a powerful critique—one that educators will ignore at their peril.

Putting Student First: How Colleges Develop Students Purposefully by Larry A. Braskamp et al. (Anker Publishing)

Offered by RoeschLeisure: Hardcover edition in excellent condition.

Description: Society is calling for higher education to take more responsibility for helping students find purpose and meaning in life. In this book, the authors argue that colleges should purposefully invest in students in ways that will foster their holistic development by recognizing and building on students’ purpose in life, intellectually, spiritually, and morally. By using the “4C framework”—culture, curriculum, cocurriculum, and community—faculty, student affairs staff, and academic administrators will be able to discuss, plan, and create a college environment that effectively supports the learning and development of students. The book contains a set of themes and calls for consideration and action based on the findings of site visits at 10 colleges and a set of questions to help readers think about and plan how to develop students holistically on their own campuses. Contents include: • Putting students first
• Conceptual framework and design of the project
• Culture
• Curriculum
• Cocurriculum
• Community
• Creating communities that put students first

It is the sound of marital negotiations breaking down.

Women will read this book and think, “Exactly! I only want to be noticed, to be loved, to be considered …. It doesn't take much …..”

Men will read this and go, “God, I've done that! How many times has she done that to me? By what right …..?”

Abi was his first girlfriend. When she said she loved him, he was taken by surprise but kind of agreed. They got married, but she made all the arrangements for the wedding.

When she became pregnant, it was because she decided it was time and stopped taking precautions, but Will thought Sophie was the most beautiful baby in the world when she was born.

However time, stress and misunderstandings took their toll, and now they live apart.

Now for the big questions - what have they learned? Does Will care enough to try to put things right, and does Abi care enough to let him?

Tom Bedlam by George Hagen (Random House)

Offered by RoeschLeisure: Hardcover edition without dustjacket. Discard marks on edge of pages but in excellent condition.

Description: Born in a shabby tenement in Victorian London, young Tom Bedlam is employed stoking the furnaces in a massive porcelain factory; he is son to a father he has never met, and sibling to a baby who vanished at birth. But in spite of these disadvantages, he is a positive spirit, cunning in his pursuit of love, unflinchingly loyal to his friends, and possessed of a deep, passionate soul. More than anything, he wishes to bring the loose strands of his estranged family together.

After Tom’s mother dies, a mysterious family benefactor appears who offers to pay for the boy’s education. For a factory urchin this is good luck indeed, and Tom is whisked away to an exclusive private boarding school called Hammer Hall. The school is a crucible of variously privileged, predatory, meek, and noble boys, and although Tom gathers crucial clues there about his lost brother, he finds himself caught between warring forces and makes a Faustian pact that will haunt his adult life.

As Tom becomes a man, his quest assumes grander proportions, a search for his lost innocence but an attempt to create the family he dreamed of in childhood. His experiences will challenge his decency and force him to weigh his character against the pitfalls of loyalty, patriotism, love, and familial duty.

Tom Bedlam shows how small deeds in childhood can resonate for a lifetime, and how the bonds of family ultimately prevail against the devastating march of progress and human folly. Most of all, it is a journey with a good friend. Charming, whimsical, passionate, and funny–there’s no better companion than Tom Bedlam.

Your Soul's Plan: Discovering the Real Meaning of the Life You Planned Before You Were Born by Robert Schwartz (Frog Books)

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by CourageousSouls (author): 1 copy in exchange for a review on Librarything.

Description: The book Your Soul’s Plan: Discovering the Real Meaning of the Life You Planned Before You Were Born by Robert Schwartz (www.yoursoulsplan.com) explores the premise that we are all eternal souls who plan our lives, including our greatest challenges, before we’re born for purposes of spiritual growth. The book contains ten true stories of people who planned physical illness, having disabled children, deafness, blindness, drug addiction, alcoholism, losing a loved one, and severe accidents. The information about their pre-birth plans was obtained by four gifted mediums and channels. The book presents the actual conversations people had with their future parents, children, spouses, friends, and other loved ones when they planned their lives together. For readers, suffering that once seemed purposeless becomes imbued with deep meaning. Wisdom may be acquired in a more conscious manner; feelings of anger, guilt, blame, and victimization are healed and replaced by acceptance, forgiveness, gratitude, and peace.

Author Bio

In a personal session with a medium in 2003, author Robert Schwartz was astonished to speak with nonphysical beings who knew everything about him - not just what he had done in life, but also what he had thought and felt. They told him that he had planned many of his most difficult experiences before he was born. Realizing that a knowledge of pre-birth planning would bring great healing to people and allow them to understand the deeper purpose of their life challenges, he decided to devote his life to the study of pre-birth planning. The extraordinary insights that have emerged from his work speak to our heartfelt, universal yearning to know . . . why.

Description: The perception of public transportation in America is often unflattering — a squalid last resort for those with one too many drunk-driving charges, too poor to aford insurance, or too decrepit to get behind the wheel of a car. Indeed, a century of auto-oriented culture and bad city planning has left most of the country with transit that is underfunded, ill maintained, and ill conceived. But as the demand for oil fast outpaces the world's supply, a revolution in transportation is under way.

In this timely and persuasive book, Taras Grescoe joins the ranks of the world's straphangers — the growing number of people who rely on public transport to go about the business of their daily lives. On a journey that has him riding metros, buses, and trains in New York, Moscow, Paris, Copenhagen, Tokyo, Bogota, Phoenix, Portland, Vancouver, and Philadelphia, Grescoe gets the inside story on the world's great transit systems, going beneath the streets to see subway tunnels being dug and uncovering new ideas that will help undo the damage a century of car-centric planning has done to our cities. Ultimately, he envisions a future with convenient, affordable, and sustainable urban transportation — and better city living — for all.
