The Hangman's Replacement: Sprout of Disruption by Taona Dumisani Chiveneko (Chiveneko Publishing Inc.)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by Taona (publisher): I am the publisher of the book and would like to expand its readership by building a solid base of reviews, especially as a run-up to the sequel which is due in the next few months.

Description: SYNOPSIS

Zimbabwe’s last hangman retired in 2004. As the nation drifted towards abolition, no determined effort was launched to find a replacement. However, the discovery of carnivorous flame lilies at the Great Zimbabwe monument triggered a spirited search for a new executioner. Those who know why this discovery energized the recruitment effort refused to talk. The frantic attempts to find a new hangman were impeded by the lack of suitable candidates. Well-placed sources confirmed that the fear of ngozi was a deterrent.

According to this traditional belief, the spirit of a murdered person torments the killer and his family for generations. However, this is only half the story. Several promising applicants did come forward. None met the minimum requirements for the job. The selection criteria were designed to exclude the mentally ill, the vindictive, and the sadistic. However, they did not rule out the desperate.

The Sprout of Disruption (Book 1) introduces the universe of characters whose lives have been set alight by the plant which sparked the recruitment effort. It tells the story of the aspiring hangman who was obsessed with securing the job, the sympathizers who fought to protect him from his prize, and the anxious men who believed that emptying death row would end their horror before the meat-eating plants constricted around their necks.

Offered by MandyBroughton (author): A science fiction anthology with thirty stories and poems from some of sci-fi's up and coming stars. Available e-book formats are .mobi, .epub, and .pdf. Description: This classical book is a powerful account of the thinking of the great philosophers to whom we are indebted for leading the way out of the darkness of superstition and myths, for setting the platform for science, for raising the bar for our thinking, for expressing freedom of speech and honest discourse and for the sheer joy of living an examined life, even today. When it comes to the ancient Greek philosophers, government, ethics, critical thinking and even the universe was explored. The book gives a great overview of the ancient greek philosophers: Thales, Epicurus, Pythagoras, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle to name a few. This is a valuable companion for the student of philosophy, whether at college or university, or at home.

The author, Gerhard Albin Rauche, is the author of 16 books and monographs, 22 book-chapters and more than 70 journal articles. This edition is the first available in kindle format.

Una flotta in potenza. Le navi da guerra austro-ungariche della Prima guerra mondiale by Russell Phillips (Shilka Publishing)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by phillipsrussell (author): Disponibile in formato PDF, EPUB e MOBI/Kindle.

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by phillipsrussell (author): Sono disponibili i formati PDF, EPUB e MOBI/Kindle. Se fosse possibile, gradirei ricevere una recensione. La più utile sarebbe una recensione su Amazon, ma apprezzerei molto una recensione su qualsiasi piattaforma.

Description: “Fu una questione dannatamente combattuta”

Description: When Evil comes knocking do you dare answer?

There's a little evil in all of us — that part of the human soul that doesn't care if God is watching. It starts with a faint tap. Ignore it. If you’re lucky it will go away. Daniel Haley isn't one of the lucky ones. Evil kicks the door down and makes itself at home.

While cleaning the attic, Daniel finds a box labeled “Dark Stuff.” Hidden beneath the dust and cobwebs are relics of childhood scares — books about vampires and werewolves, slasher movies that kids shouldn't watch. The thing that stands out is a spirit board which contributed to the scariest night of Daniel's teen years.

Looking back, Daniel can't help but laugh. He no longer believes in the supernatural. Ghosts are just products of wild teenage imagination. Daniel decides to inject a little fear into the stale relationship with his girlfriend Jess by scaring her with the harmless toy.

But you never know what will happen when you play with The Dark Stuff.

Offered by mclesh (author): Hello, all! I'm very happy to offer advance reader copies of Mr. Katz is a Zombie, book #1 of my Goethalsburg Ghost Squad series, which is geared toward a lower middle grade audience. I think there's a place in this world for silly books. At least I hope so.

Description: Catastrophe looms in North Goethalsburg!

When twelve-year-old J.D. is tricked into taking possession of a book of spells, his best friend turns their teacher into a zombie. The zombification of Mr. Katz creates general chaos and a not-so-terrific time for near-genius J.D.

Teamed with his best friend Rodney, twin troublemakers, and an obnoxious ghost, J.D. must figure out how to change Mr. Katz back from one of the undead before he:

1. Escapes the janitor’s closet;
2. Eats their brains;
and
3. Wears J.D.’s spleen as a hat.

Can four boys armed with a slingshot, two boxes of jelly donuts, and a handy zombie guide battle their mindless teacher and live to tell?

Probably not.

You’ll have to read to find out.

Space City 6: Houston Stories from the Weird to the Wonderful by Greenleaf, Leventhal, Maguire, Rothberg, Shaughnessy Broughton (Black Mare Books)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by castlemaguire (publisher): Space City 6 is the debut anthology from the Space City Scribes, a Houston-based independent writers' group. We have gathered together a weird and wonderful connection of stories in different genres (from the historical to the hysterical) with a Houston flair. We are seeking reviews pending the official launch on November 8, 2014.

Description: Space City 6 is a collection of short stories from the weird to the wonderful, all with a Houston flair. We begin with the birth of Houston in a mosquito—and alligator-people—infested swamp where a mermaid is intent on stopping human encroachment. Fast forward to the 1940s where we join a soldier and his new bride as they struggle with the challenges of separation due to World War II. We take a funny and fantastical turn with a Louisiana transplant who learns the hard way that jackalopes do exist. And they have a penchant for blood and hard liquor. And then we journey to a darker side of the city as we find out what happens when an unstable woman with a loaded gun wreaks havoc on an idyllic community. Follow us on another twist as we explore the ins and outs of discrimination - all the new professor wants is to fit in, but students and faculty shun her as readily as she shuns the light. What's a vampire to do? Finally, travel to the far future on a treasure hunt. The Houston tunnel systems are in ruin and a wealthy real estate tycoon wants to revitalize, but he soon discovers more than just real estate under the rubble.

My Psychic War with Uncle Sam by E. Alexander Scianna (Harmonious Circle Press)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by alecazandre (publisher): E-book edition (.epub or .mobi) of our timely underground literary fiction novel My Psychic War with Uncle Sam.

We’d appreciate your sincere LT book-review, and if possible on Barnes & Noble (http://goo.gl/x1CnT) or Amazon (http://goo.gl/Z2rKw).

Regards,
Harmonious Circle Press
http://theharmoniouscirclepress.net

Description: An intellectual coming of age, My Psychic War with Uncle Sam swings from life on the military base with G.I. Joes in starched fatigues to the streets of Seattle where Dennis and Marcel encounter the hippie culture seeking nirvana on hallucinogenic drugs. The reader is taken on an exhilarating romp through western thought and history as the ideological struggles that permeated the 60’s generation are juxtaposed with the uncertainties of modern day life. With heavy doses of mysticism, drama, and humor—just to keep things interesting—the authors ask, “Who is Uncle Sam?”

Dennis DeLuccio invites the reader into his underground garden to rethink politics, war, sex, drugs, philosophy, religion, the occult, the origin of the hippie movement, and the meaning of a psychic war. Dennis drifts back to 1968 and his first assignment at Fort Lewis, Washington. He remembers Marcel Dreyfus, a young soldier who has just returned from a tour of duty in Vietnam. The many GI’s who say they don’t believe in the war, yet stand at attention, fall silent and follow orders even as they are shipped out to Nam, mystified Dennis. Marcel however cuts through the illusions of the so-called patriots with wit and rhetoric.

Packed with documented facts of U.S. foreign policy, paraphrased from the works of Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, Bertrand Russell and others, as well as broadcast news reports of the period, My Psychic War with Uncle Sam infuses social comment with lived experience. Like Joseph Heller’s Catch-22, it fashions the account of a young army recruit living stateside through the Vietnam era into an eloquent and deeply funny plea against butchery in the service of authority. My Psychic War with Uncle Sam weaves historical fact and dramatic fiction into an essential storybook of our times that is both entertaining and enlightening.

“What a surprise! This is an exuberant romp through history, politics, and philosophy, through the eyes of a modern Alice in Wonderland. Escaping down a hole in his living room floor, Dennis seeks refuge from the horrors of 9-11 in his secret garden only to confront madness and paranoia, as he tends his garden and searches for an understanding of his experiences in the army during the Viet Nam era. The novel will keep you wondering what supposed masters of truth can be trusted to guide Dennis home in his psychic war with Uncle Sam?”
—Cynthia McKinney, U.S. Congresswoman and 2008 Green Party U.S. Presidential Nominee

“A dramatic account of one man’s psychic and political struggle against the cant and crimes of establishment institutions. Written with engaging candor and much human spirit.”
—Michael Parenti, author of Contrary Notions and God and His Demons

So far My Psychic War with Uncle Sam is earning mostly 5-star reviews on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, LibraryThing, and Goodreads. Here are some links relevant to the novel and its authors:

Soon Dallas finds herself in deeper trouble than she's ever encountered—with no way to reach her contacts. Can she break free of the bunker and stop their bizarre end-of-world plans? Will Agent McCullen identify the killer in time to help?

Description: The idea of being a fugitive when your means of transport can only move at walking pace is somewhat ludicrous, as is living on a boat that is, in size, little more than a large packing case. That and the self proclaimed stowaway was about to make the rest of the year very different as, armed with nothing more dangerous than a windlass and a box of Soviet made watches, the crew of the Mayfly set about doing their bit in preserving the inland waterway network before it was too late. In their travels they meet a number of unlikely allies, discover skills they didn't think they had, and, as the job of fugitive requires, are chased by some decidedly undesirable people.

Solomon the Peacemaker by Hunter Welles (Cowcatcher Press)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by Cowcatcher.Press (publisher): Enter to win Hunter Welles's incredible debut novel, Solomon the Peacemaker.

Description: "Solomon the Peacemaker was one of the most devastating, beautiful things I've read all year. It is a masterful debut novel. I absolutely loved it." – Book Puke

"The author deftly weaves in philosophy, religion and our fears of technology without sacrificing his story." – St. Paul Pioneer Press

Vincent Alan Chell is coy about answering the questions of his captor. He’d much rather talk about his dead wife, Yael, whose suicide somehow led him into captivity. Or Preacher, the bearded leader of a cult-like group that meets in the bowels of a church basement. Or the Peacemaker, the computer intelligence that has guaranteed peace between nations for half a century.

Chell describes a world where cultural norms have changed the way people interact with technology. Humanoid robots, though ubiquitous, are confined inside private homes, giving the impression that all is well with the world. Which may be the case. Yet Preacher and his group are convinced that humankind is already in the thrall of the Peacemaker. And they might be right.

Solomon the Peacemaker, Hunter Welles’s debut novel, explores the limits of technology, nonviolence, love, and memory in the twenty-second century as it races to its incredible conclusion.

Description: What happens when you get the life you aim for and it hurts like hell?

The Johns family is unraveling. Hollis, a retired Ohio banker, isolates himself in esoteric hobbies and a dangerous flirtation with a colleague’s daughter. Susan, his wife of forty years, risks everything for a second chance at who she might have become. David, their eldest, thrashes to stay afloat as his teaching career capsizes in a storm of accusations involving a missing student and the legacy of Christopher Columbus. And young Tilly, the black sheep, having traded literary promise for an improbable career as a Hollywood starlet, struggles to define herself amid salacious scandal, the demands of a powerful director, and the judgments of an uncompromising writer.

By turns comical and poignant, the Johns family is tumbling toward the discovery that sometimes you have to let go of your identity to find out who you are.

"[A] cerebral page turner…a powerful and promising debut."—Kirkus Reviews

"In its structure and nature, [The Lion Trees] reminds me above all of John Updike’s wonderful Harry Rabbit novels and their ability to summarize the essence of change in American society across a decade at a time.” - BookIdeas.com

"[Five Stars] — [A] powerful, gripping and realistic story…The Lion Trees does what so very few great novels can: it will take a lot out of you, but leave you with much more than you had when you began.”—Pacific Book Reviews

Out of reach of the hands of unscrupulous men, they found life on the farm a tolerable substitute for the traditional alternatives life would force onto them—until the night the pirates showed up.

Setting foot on that first pirate ship was nothing compared to the life of freedom and adventure awaiting them, once Ivory and the girls were through playing nice. Only one man believes he can stop her and he won't need a ship full of guns to do it.

The odds are against Mouch—he’s locked up in Talsom Mental Asylum; his only friends are a sock puppet and his shadow. The Prediction by Darren Sugrue (KDC Publishing)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by DarrenSugrue (author): First 100 Reviewers - VIP List
http://www.darrensugrue.com/first-100...
To an unpublished writer, a positive review or rating is like gold dust. It's a tiny step in the journey of getting your work noticed (and possibly published). I've given myself the goal of collecting 100 honest reviews by the end of 2014. It is for this reason that I am giving The Prediction away for FREE!
Obviously I would like to attract as many positive reviews as possible, but if you genuinely don't like the book, I still encourage you to write a review. Dealing with criticism is part of what being a writer is all about.

I do ask however that you read the blurb before downloading the book or entering the Giveaway just to see if it is in fact your kind of book to begin with (i.e. Thriller, Drama, Suspense).
What do the first 100 Reviewers get in return?
If (when!) it is officially published - a free signed physical copy
A free e-copy of my next book (probably 2015)
A link to your blog (if you have one) on my website
Special mention in the acknowledgements section of my next book
And well, if I ever make it big and become a bestselling author, trust me when I say the First 100 Reviewers VIP list is NOT something I will easily forget! :-)

Description: PRAISE for "The Prediction":
"Gripping storyline, full of suspense and a most unexpected ending."
"An engaging suspense-filled book that kept me awake reading way into the night!"
"I finished it in one sitting - amazing. This book deserves to be read!"
"This is one of the most compelling, vivid, clever stories I've read in quite some time."

Nobody knows the day they’ll die... until now.

Mathematical genius Daniel Geller has developed a formula to predict a person’s date of death only to have it rejected by the faculty at Trinity College. Totally devastated Daniel turns his back on the world he once loved.

Twelve years on, Daniel’s old professor John Redmond and his wife are coming to terms with the death of their ten-year-old son. Could Daniel's formula have predicated his death? Revisiting the thesis, the professor makes an astonishing discovery: out of the five fellow students whom Daniel used the formula on, one of them died on the exact date predicted by Daniel.

One more is due to die in six days: Daniel’s ex-lover Grace.

The professor draws Daniel back into the world of mathematics where he is suddenly faced with the dilemma of allowing someone he once loved to die to be one step closer to proving his thesis and enjoying a prestige he once dreamed of...

Set in the vibrant cities of Dublin and Amsterdam, The Prediction is a powerful story about coping with shattered dreams, the loss of a loved one, and an illustration of just how unpredictable the human heart can be.

The series of awesome real-life photos provide a rare opportunity of a birds-eye view of a family of baby swallows in their nest.
The simple rhyming story makes it a great bedtime story and early first reader.
The birds’ antics provide a platform for discussion on important topics such as sharing and bullying.

Aquarius Rising: In the Tears of God by Brian Burt (Double Dragon Publishing)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by btburt (author): I'm giving away 10 eBook copies of my debut novel to celebrate its being named the winner of the 2014 EPIC eBook Award for Science Fiction. Reviews submitted by the giveaway winners would be greatly appreciated (but of course not mandatory). Winners will be gifted an eBook from the Amazon Kindle store (or, alternatively, from Barnes & Noble Nook or Apple iBookstore if that's your preference). Or I can simply furnish a PDF or ePub format document if that's what you'd rather receive. Thank you in advance for any thoughtful reviews you decide to post!

Description: On an Earth ravaged by climate change, and a disastrous attempt to reverse it, human-dolphin hybrids called Aquarians have built thriving reef colonies among the drowned cities of the coast. Now their world is under siege from an enemy above the waves whose invisible weapon leaves no survivors. Ocypode of Tillamook is an Atavism: half-human and half-Aquarian, marooned in the genetic limbo between species. Only he knows why the colonies north and south of Tillamook Reef have been destroyed, literally turned to stone. Ocypode knows that Tillamook will be targeted next, but sharing the reason might prove as deadly to Aquarius as the Medusa plague itself.

Ocypode and his Aquarian and human comrades flee into the open ocean to escape Medusa, until another Aquarian’s treachery leaves them at the mercy of a killer storm. Ocypode must pass through the Electric Forest, where he faces nightmarish creatures and a legendary sea witch who becomes an ally. Finally, he must confront the cyber-ghost of the human he most despises: Peter Cydon, the Great Father who bioengineered the mutagenic virus that gave birth to the Aquarian species. These unlikely allies provide the only chance to stop the Redeemers, rogue scientists who are determined to resurrect the land by slaughtering the sea. Even these allies will not be enough, and Ocypode must decide whom to trust with a secret as lethal as any plague.

The Hangman's Replacement: Sprout of Disruption by Taona Dumisani Chiveneko (Chiveneko Publishing Inc.)

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by Taona (publisher): As the publisher, I am conducting this giveaway to grow the book's review base.

KIRKUS REVIEW EXTRACT

"At nearly 500 pages, this intricately woven novel is a disconcerting parable exploded to epic proportions. The author renders its many characters, from the mad genius responsible for the impending botanical apocalypse, to the prostitute/undercover operative who falls in love with Abel, to the seemingly simple Abel himself, with frightening subtlety and detail.... A thought-provoking, singularly strange and absorbing novel."

INDIEREADER REVIEW EXTRACT

“This is a work of completely bizarre genius. The author has an almost Wodehousian gift with words, decorating his pages with phrases that can make the reader laugh out loud, question long-held assumptions about reality, or send a chill up the spine with just a few deft descriptive touches. Some of the characters, and the situations they find themselves in, can be completely off-the-wall, but the author’s writing ability carefully makes them almost plausible, even natural." “This is a delightful book for those who enjoy having their perspectives stretched, who take delight in the weird and idiosyncratic, and who love watching a master author do breathtaking juggling acts with the English language."

c3 by Sherrie Cronin (Cinnabar Press)

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by SherrieCronin (author): c3, a new metaphysical fantasy about out-of-body experiences, is a book about an important topic aimed at mature fantasy lovers of all ages. I attempted not to gloss over the difficult subject matter of human trafficking, and yet to produce a story appropriate for those as young as sixteen. c3 is part of 46 Ascending, a collection of loosely interrelated novels about five very different family members who each discover that they can do the extraordinary when circumstances require it. These books are designed to be read as stand alone stories or in any order. Each book explores a facet of magical realism, as its down-to-earth hero comes to understand the powers that he or she holds within.

Description: Teddie likes her country music and her old pick-up truck and she's not sure how she let her best friend talk her into spending a semester abroad in Darjeeling India. Once she arrives, her innocence collides with an underworld in which young women are bartered and sold. As she fights to understand a depravity that she never dreamed existed, Teddie finds that her own mind develops a unique ability for locating her friends and that an ancient group is willing to train her to save others by using her innate skills for out of body experiences. It will require trust in ideas she barely believes, and more courage than has ever been expected of her. When it becomes clear that the alternative may be her friends' deaths and the unchecked growth of an evil crime lord's empire, Teddie accepts the challenge and shows those guilty of unspeakable crimes just how powerful a young woman can be.

The Fragrance of Crushed Violets: Forgiving the Inexcusable by Cathy Bryant (WordVessel Press)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Offered by catbry1 (author): This giveaway is provided by the author, Cathy Bryant.

Description: A Bible study about forgiveness...

What do we do when a loved one, boss, co-worker, friend, or enemy seem determined to bring us down through an attack? How do we handle it when their assault is personal, public, deep, unjust, unfair, and unfounded? Take it one step further. How do we deal with meaningless acts of destruction and death, say in something similar to the Twin Towers incident or a school shooting, especially when the offender shows no remorse? Do we file it in our brains and rack it up to "one more senseless act" and chance to think that God somehow messed up?

In short, how do we move past the hurt and anger to a place of forgiveness?

Join us as we examine relevant scriptures and come away with a scriptural understanding of:
• what forgiveness is and what it isn't
• God's role in the process of forgiveness
• what Jesus accomplished at the cross for each of us
• our mandate to forgive as we've been forgiven
• what gets in the way of forgiving others
• how to truly forgive

Red Meat Cures Cancer by Starbuck O'Dwyer (Random House/Vintage)

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by StarbuckODwyer (author): Winner will receive a signed copy promptly. Many thanks for your interest. NOTE: For funny stories and other special promotions, please follow Starbuck on Goodreads, Facebook or Twitter.

Description: *AUTOGRAPHED COPY* Rare opportunity to win a signed copy of an award-winning CULT CLASSIC of political incorrectness. Not for the easily offended, Red Meat was a silver-medalist in the Independent Publisher Book Awards (humor) and a bronze-medalist in the ForeWord Reviews Book of the Year Awards (humor) before being acquired at auction and published by Marty Asher, legendary editor-in-chief of Knopf's Vintage and Anchor Books imprints. Quoted in Publisher's Weekly Daily, Asher said, "What appealed to me most about Starbuck's novel was how it managed to be universally offensive. Neither right-wingers, nor lefties, meat-eaters or vegetarians, CEOs or clerks could take any solace from this hilarious, outrageous satire. At such a politically correct moment in time as this, who could possibly resist publishing a book that pisses everybody off, regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, eating habits or whatever?"
