LibraryThing for Libraries

Privacy/Terms of Use

General

Privacy

We respect the privacy of individual LibraryThing members, LibraryThing for Libraries libraries, and library patrons. When a patron browses your OPAC, their browser's JavaScript interpreter sends the LibraryThing server the ISBN they are looking at and (depending on circumstance) the tag, recommendation, other edition or translation, or reviews.

Disclaimer and Limitations of Liability

The LibraryThing.com website may not have up-to-date information about LTFL, may have incorrect information, or may update information without notice. We may change the LTFL enhancements without notice. The LTFL enhancements are provided 'as is', and are without warranties of any kind. We are not liable for any damages, including data interruption, which we do truly try to avoid.

These terms and conditions are subject to the usual change-at-any-time. We promise to make substantive changes openly and with the opportunity for libraries to cease their subscription. All of the terms of service are controlled through LibraryThing.com LLC, and any disputes will be dealt with through the great commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Use of your patron data with Catalog Enhancements

Catalog Enhancements Privacy

LibraryThing is completely de-coupled from your OPAC's patron data. No library patron data is transferred, and no other personal information is sent to or received by LibraryThing. The data included in our enhancements are based on anonymous, aggregated user content.

Catalog Enhancements Disclaimer

LibraryThing disclaims liability for any direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, special, exemplary, punitive or other damages, or lost profits, that may result, directly or indirectly, from your use of this website, services, or content; including without limitation any damage to computer systems, hardware or software, loss of data, or any other performance failures, or any errors, bugs, viruses or other defects that result from or are associated with use of this website. Terms/Privacy Specific to Reviews Enhancement

By choosing to deploy the LibraryThing for Libraries Reviews Enhancement in a "live" setting, you are agreeing to the following terms of use:

  1. Your library receives a limited right to show LibraryThing content within your OPAC. You may duplicate reviews for use within the library itself. You may also show selections of LibraryThing content outside of your OPAC to announce, discuss or promote the feature.
  2. Access to LibraryThing content is only permitted as intended—through a web browser manipulated by a human being. Harvesting of records through an automatic process is explicitly forbidden.
  3. Please see the Patron Terms of Service for ownership of each review.
  4. If you allow your LTFL subscription to cease or lapse, you must immediately stop use of reviews from LTFL sources (including from other libraries and LibraryThing.com) other than your own library's, and you may not keep any copies of reviews (digital or otherwise) from other libraries or LibraryThing.com. A digital copy of your library's reviews will be made available.
  5. The reviews enhancement code integrated into your OPAC belongs to LibraryThing.com LLC.

Use of your library data

Use of your patron data

By signing up for an At My Library account and posting a review patrons grant certain rights, but retain others.

Among the rights retained is the copyright on their review, which is NOT transferred, and the right to publish their review elsewhere--wherever they see fit. They grant their home library library—the library they signed up for an account with, and submitted the review to—and LibraryThing.com, LLC a free, unlimited, perpetual and fully sublicenseable right to use your review. The patron's review may be displayed on their library's website or that of other libraries, on the website of LibraryThing.com, or on websites that syndicate their content—such as when you install the "At my Library" Facebook application.

The patron's review may be subject to moderation and approval by their library, other libraries, or LibraryThing.com for any reason. Likely reasons include copyrighted, slanderous, offensive or personal information (i.e. phone number or address). Moderators at the home library and the staff of LibraryThing are the final arbiters of what does and does not get approved. A patron review may be edited for language or length.

These terms constitute the patron's agreement with LibraryThing.com, LCC. By posting their review the patron also agrees to abide by any terms added by their home library.

Patron Terms of Service

(These are the terms the patron agrees to when they sign up for an account.) "At my Library" is a joint service of LibraryThing.com, LLC, your library and other libaries around the world.

By posting your review to this service, you grant both your library and LibraryThing a non-exclusive, perpetual, royalty-free right to display, use, aggregate, modify, adapt, publish, transform, create derivative works from and perform your review in any venue or media, online or offline.

This grant is restricted as follows:

  1. Reviews can only be used on your library, at other libraries designated by LibraryThing.com, on other sites designed for libraries and their patrons, and on LibraryThing.com. Your reviews will not appear on any site devoted to bookselling.
  2. Your review will always be accompanied by some indication of your library.
  3. No party to these terms will sell any personally-identifiable information to anyone else.

Please note that, by submitting a review, you do NOT lose copyright to it, nor are you restricted where else you may submit or publish it. You may publish your review anywhere you like, and even sell it.

The Library reserves the right to edit or remove reviews that do not follow these guidelines.

Reviews Enhancement Privacy

The only patron data acquired is a username, a password, (optionally) an email address, and the content of that patron's reviews. All patron identification information is not shared or sold to anyone. Patrons who sign up can elect to not include an email address, making them anonymous to us. The passwords collected are encrypted. Anything outside the patron's password and email address is considered non-confidential. LibraryThing.com is allowed the use of patron reviews for commercial purpose, and patron personal information for aggregated statistics purposes, but won't divulge patron information to any third parties.
