Arroyo Gusanos Book Club

Description: This is NOT off the record, on the QT, or "hush-hush". Northeast Los Angelenos are hereby notified that a celebration of literary gold will ensue in our nether woods at various noteworthy haunts. It is treasures like these which we will read, ponder, and discuss. If you are moved by the power of literature and happen to be a denizen of the northeast L.A. area (Highland Park, Eagle Rock, Monterey Hills, Mt. Washington, Garvanza, Hermon, and all corners of coolness thereof), join in this book bacchanal. For our gabacho pals, "Arroyo gusanos" means river worms, as in bookworms who reside near the Arroyo Seco in L.A. Dig it?

Next Meeting Details:

La Casa Blue, located at 5930 York Blvd. (east of nearest cross-street: Figueroa Blvd.), Highland Park; 323-257-0089. The next meeting will be on Sunday, April 6th at 1pm. Our chosen book is by Brock Clarke, entitled "An Arsonist's Guide to Writers' Homes in New England." The book spans 305 pages. Read more about it here: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story...

NPR's review: Sam Pulsifer "accidentally" burned down Emily Dickinson's house, killing two people who were in it. While Sam's serving his 10-year sentence for this crime, his father receives letters from people asking if he could please have his son burn down the houses of Hawthorne, Mark Twain, and other famous authors. After he's released, some of these houses are burned, but not by him. An Arsonist's Guide to Writers' Homes in New England is more than a mystery, though. It's a reminder that books and the stories in them can change people's lives. Sam blames his plight on all the time his mother spent reading Emily Dickinson to him. Just as her obsession with Dickinson affected Sam's life, it appears that others are also haunted by the works of famous authors. Yet, in his quest to understand his own life, Sam turns to books and decides to write his own memoir. This wildly odd novel is the result.
