60's and 70's science fiction with a more surreal, literary, and humanistic turn, more likely to look at the social sciences as well as/instead of the hard sciences for content.

New Wave authors might include Michael Moorcock, Roger Zelazny, Ursula Le Guin, James Tiptree, Jr., Samuel R. Delany, Harlan Ellison, Philip Jose Farmer, John Sladek, Thomas M. Disch, and JG Ballard, etc.
