Social Democrats & Democratic Socialists

Description: This group is for every left-leaning politico who self-identifies as a social democrat or democratic socialist, be he or she a member of a social democratic, socialist or liberal/progressive coalition party.

While its members most certainly disagree on a number of substantive issues, they recognize: the primacy of democratic politics over free market economics; the necessity of governmental intervention of and regulation in the market; the importance of governmental support for the peacefully promotion of human and civil rights at home and abroad; the indisputable need for national and global environmental regulation; and the value of pluralism and secularism in sustaining a democratic polity.

In other words, it is a group for leftists that: categorically reject violent revolutionary politics in the "developed" world; rarely support violent revolutionary politics in the developing world on a case by case scenario; consider anti-statist politics to be impractical and irrational; and unabashedly reject the notion that communism or economic and social liberalism represent "the end of history."

Given the success of Pro and Con, conversation in this group will likely be limited. That said, if you would like to discuss books, history, current events or left-wing politics, post away! A number of us will undoubtedly be interested in your topic.
