Was anyone else angered by Mat Cauthon's rape? It really gets me how a woman raping a man is often played as comical in all forms of entertainment. As the saying goes, "You can't rape the willing," and society strongly believes that men are always willing, so they can't actually be raped.

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RapeIsOkWhenItIsFemaleOnMale

This situation could have been played very differently. Instead of helping Mat, Egwene laughs and mocks him. Sure, he's effectively the slut of the group, but we know that he's never forced himself on anyone. Egwene warns him that he had better not be taking advantage of Tylin, as he's effectively pleading for help.

I don't remember this part, the WoT page on TVtropes.org says that she changes her tune when she actually realizes what's going on, and briefly attempts to console him. That isn't much of a reconciliation when so many chapters were spent playing it up for humor.

Rozax: Sad news

January 2011<br />He passed away on my dad's birthday. I usually call my family on their birthdays, but he was on a business trip, so I waited until my brother's birthday (the 25th) to talk to them both. Figuring they already knew, I asked, "How are you taking the Robert Jordan news?" What an awkward situation.

I think that as WoT grew he regretted that he had written a short story as precursor material since he felt he needed to write a whole novel, which becomes much smaller when you take out the stuff that is not part of the tale.

DWWilkin: A Gathering Storm

May 2009<br />No, you should ask me for more, after it is three books. Quite enjoyed that. Leigh Butler has a great sense of humour and I enjoyed her writing on the WoTFAQ. Glad to see she wasn't inhibited by TOR on calling spades shovels and all that.
Hope she keeps it up...

MarcoGaidin: Getting your name in the Wheel of Time

January 2009<br />Awesome competition with an awesome final reward...
No Bordermen and no Seanchan under Mat...? Interesting. Couple of people wouldn't mind being a Child either I would wager. Not too mention the hordes that would kill to be a Wolfbrother...

Real question for me is: where will your physical likeness fit in?
*Please note this is totally arb and for fnu and probably isn't an accurate reflection on anyone's culture or heritage*

The Aiel are described (by RJ as far as I can remember) as being a combination of Zulu and American Indian (Native American if you will) cultures, with a bit of feudal Japan thrown in.
Tall people with light eyes and hair. Dark skinned though that appears to be mostly from the sun - Thank you Far Snows chapter for clearing that up.
Accent: somewhat Slavic (RJ) *imagines Gaul speaking almost like Borat - I come from Waste to make long sexy time* *Shudders*

Aes Sedai and Warders - obviously all races and nations - except I would suppose Aiel, Seanchan and Sea Folk(warders). Probably not many Amadicians either.
Accent: see above

Andorans - Based loosely on the British (including Welsh and Scottish and even a bit of Irish)
As far as I know they are pretty much dark haired, dark eyed and fair skinned. Average height and build.
Accent: Irish/British (RJ)

Cha'Faile - Most are from Cairhien I think. Don't really pay that much attention to Faile chapters. Short, dark people that are reminiscent of feudal France. Touch of Japan again. "Hills of the Golden Dawn with the rising sun symbol"
Accent: Undefined, but from the above let's assume a somewhat French accent.

By the above I would fall into the Aiel group on physical description. Nowhere by accent and probably hail from Shara if Shara is in fact *loosely* based on Africa as for eg the WoTFaQ suggests.

DWWilkin: You are hired to prep the Series for TV, what would you cut.

January 2009<br />I am not sure that the movie of Eye of the World has to be cut so much, but it certainly has to be trimmed down from a story telling to movie standpoint.

I agree that Eragon was a lousy movie in regards to what was in the book, but the book, to me, was way overhyped. Not only as a book did it have problems which one sees in a young writer, but in world building it has problems. The stories and plots I wrote when I was fresh out of college and my father said he would support me while I tried writing and didn't have to get a job is not nearly as strong as what i write now. So Eragon was not great to begin with. If I look at it another way, if there had never been an Eragon book, then some of the holes I know exist were actually now better as a movie where such things do not have to be explained.

That leads us to the Wheel of Time, a great epic with lots of elements. So many elements that to do it justice might take more money then sense.

So how does someone make money with this rich world and detail that have been provided.

In Eye of the World, we have to identify plot points that need to come across. We also have to know if there are going to be 12 movies, one per book, or more likely some blending of them, because it is likely, as we have found in the series, that certain books might not really respond to the format of completness with beginning, middle and end all wrapped up.

I like the idea of conceptualizing as a multi hour miniseries, and taking the Wouk epics, Winds of War and War and Rememberance, a lot less writing, then Wheel, giving twenty plus hours to the dramatization. That all has costs, and it seems that even with CGI, the costs run the same for live shooting, but CGI allows for grander effects. We can have giants, or Ogiers acted by a five foot nine actor if needed.

A paper thin plot might be what we want, the plot of A to B to C, with enough embellishment that it looks like the world of Jordan and the Wheel. Instead of Elyas finding Perrin after Shadar Logoth and we get that he will change, what if it happens in Baerlon while Min is there. If the actor hired for Bayle Domon won't be around for another third of the trilogy and we still want him, though his plot line is probably something that could be expunged without too much regret, (though I really do enjoy him on the page, I can see him not making it to the big screen) perhaps he doesn't need to be early in the epic. Showing up later when the girls are tracking Black Ajah may be more than enough.

doshiamit: Can Sanderson do a good job

January 2009<br />There are most definitely a number of storylines that are superfluous. I'd say the succession was the most annoying. Regarding the Perin-Faile thing, Im ok with the Perrin parts, the Faile parts annoy me. Though I do thnk that part of the irritation there comes from the fact that their story doesnt move for a couple of books. IIRC there actually arent that many Perrin Faile Chapters in Books 8, 9, or 10, its just that there is no progress. Another guy who I enjoyed the first time but grates on a reread is Valan Luca in TFOH. The Seanchan stoylines are more of a setup for Mat Tuon so I can see the need for some of that, and I get pleasure just reading the name Furyk Karede. It doesnt really matter what he does with a name like that :).

Ive never been all that into MMORPGs but I can see myself playing as an Ashaman for sure.

One more thing. Sanderson has a sci fi novella up on tor.com called Firstborn. Really good. Really really good. The more I read him the happier I am with the choice. In case you haven't seen it. The feature film it seems is being pushed pretty hard.
I also collected Red Eagle's New Spring comics and quite enjoyed them. The art was suprisingly good. (I also collect Magician by Feist as done by the same company and the art sucks)

Further to that they seem to be planning to release a MMORPG which seems to be the big thing these days. (I play WOW - there I have said it) and to be honest I would LOVE to see a MMORPG based on WoT.

Also: it is Friday afternoon and I am not in the mood to keep working.

The lizard skull Egwene saw in Verin's room, the description sounds like an alligator or a crocodile...what does everyone else think?
It's on page 236 of the paperback version.

Then in the same scene where Verin gives Egwene the dreamer's ring, she didn't give her the papers that had knowledge about the ring that Egwene could have used.
Verin's thoughts were "what will happen, will happen".
She had thought to burn them or give to Egwene.
Why do you think she kept those papers instead of giving them to Egwene?
It seems to me there is very important information contained within those papers if she had even considered burning it (her a Brown Aes Sedai!!).

liselle40: Brandon Sandersons latest

July 2008<br />i read Elantris first, and was a little bit scared off by the way he wrote it. it was an amazing book otherwise. i even agreed with the critic who said you couldn't tell it was a first book. then i read Mistborn and finally The Well of Ascension and i have to say i am much more impressed. if Elantris was amazing, then the other two are whatever is amazingly beyond amazing.

booklover79: Book by book - The Eye of the World

July 2008<br />I didn't think of that, that there could be other figurines around (and you're right, Elayne *could* make another one....).
I think they all have to be in the same vicinity if they are going to link with Rand though, so having women channelers near that huge statue and Rand in the Blight near Shayol Gyul fighting the DO and trying to seal the bore wouldn't work IMO....maybe they could figure out logistics somehow...open a Travel gateway thingiemajobs and have the women in one side linking while Rand is on the other?LOL.

booklover79: Book by Book - The Great Hunt

July 2008<br />Forgive me if I repeat a question.
I just started reading The Great Hunt and I wondered about something.
The wind that held Rand on the tower as he practiced swords with Lan, what caused that?

Oh, and when Rand and Egwene visit Fain in the dungeons, Egwene notices everyone is getting "worse" in their behavior...the guards, the 2 other prisoners, and even Fain.
She notices something is off that night, and Rand feels kinda weird too, and Fain appears as if he's waiting for something to happen.
I think it was a warning of sorts, maybe Egwene and Rand felt Trollocs and Fades nearby, but they didn't know that as they aren't trained in the Power yet.
I remember Moiraine had mentioned in the 1st book that those who channel the One Power (and the Warders bonded to them) can sense the presence of Trollocs and Fades.
Cuz you read later, that Fain does get freed and there were Trollocs that left the prophecy on the walls.

ETA:

Has anyone ever wondered why those who channel can't feel the One Power in the stedding?
I've been wondering about that....what is so different about the steddings that those who can channel can't even sense it?

I agree, for the most part they just moan a lot about arb stuff that they brought on themselves.

I like the idea of a United Randland, though obviously I'll still plug my 3 Power Base Rangers Unite theory.

As far as the rest go, cool. Especially with the seanchan clearing off. Would prob ease up tensions a lot and they have a whole continent they can call home.

Only thing I'll add as a South African is that Far Madding and maybe Mayene could remain independant city states, ala Lesotho and Swaziland in SA.
Totally surrounded but still "self-governing" as far as most things go.

One thing we haven't *ever* addressed is Shara...
What is up there, except that they are pretty whacky, seem to resemble dark africa and have little to no impact on the story?

I cant see Perrin at A & E in the flesh. There could be some sort of TAR thing that happens but I just cant see him meeting up with Mat before he makes it there(though they are located pretty close to each other at the end of KOD).

I wonder if we will see any significance to the fact that Slayer dissapeared in the Tower of Ghenjei when Brigitte stopped Perrin from entering. It could very well be. Perhaps the character count got a bit much and you can't write books of 3000+ pages, though I would have preferred that to having to struggle through CoT.

Begs the question if there are other char's that suffer a simialar fate?

Hurin the Sniffer: Perhaps one of the coolest Talents to reappear.
Uno: I mean come on, what a guy!
Padan Fain: Surely the most evil char ever created. Where is he? What is he up to?
Birgitte: From Hero of the horn to second rate arb Queen's Guard.
The Aiel: Where's Rhuarc? Bael? and all those clan chiefs?
Davram Bashere: One of the greatest generals in the world. Prancing on his horse.
Gareth Bryne: Same situation.
Light, even Rand has taken a backseat to the Windfinders, the Kin, the Shaido and the WT intricacies.
I would like to see the original gang get reunited.
Moirraine, Lan, Nyn, Egwene, Perrin, Rand, Mat and Thom.
Add Galad, Gawyn, Elayne, The Shienarans and some Aiel clan chiefs and that is all the people I actually like reading about.

There were some chaps on Silklantern whose Asha'man were blademasters, aiel and wolfbrothers at the age of 16.
I kid you not.

There was one thread where a bunch of Soldiers and Dedicated fought (and defeated) a gholam that had randomly targeted some super Asha'man.
That was part of the reason why I started disliking fanfiction. Or at least became very careful of it. Some people just shouldn't do it.

I understand RJ's point, but surely if there is no financial gain, how can it be an infringement of copyright law? It is homage to the world and characters he created.
At least at Silklantern we never RP'ed actual characters. It seems I may have been a little harsh in my estimations of the Forsaken.
When you guys put it like that, I suppose to a world unused to violence, crime and war (as impossible as that is to imagine) the forsaken would probably have been terrifying.

I imagine something like a 14th or 15th century knight being let loose in our current 'civilisation'.
I stand corrected. Perhaps the Forsaken aren't that pathetic.

Still, sometimes I can see Ishmael with his pinkie finger in his mouth threatening to hold the world ransom for one billion Tar Valon marks...

doshiamit: Cant Mat and Perrin Channel

May 2007<br />I found something on ages at wotmania.com
http://www.wotmania.com/faqtopic.asp?ID=84

Taim
=============
Mazrim Taim - b. 971-973 NE, 27-29.
He looks about 15 years older than Rand, Lord of Chaos, A New Arrival, so he looks around 35 or a few years more at most. However, Taim apparently looks old for his age (the only channeler that does) and he is in fact in his late twenties:

Jordan: "Taim has slowed, but one thing I am not going to reveal it in the books, so I’ll tell you, men slow later than women do. And yes, he has slowed, and he is in his late twenties, yes his late twenties."

At first it was suggested that Taim’s appearance was inconsistent, but Robert Jordan later explained that, in his earlier books, Taim looked much older because of the traumatic experiences he had just endured added to his long journey and flight to Caemlyn. In his later books, Taim has recovered and doesn’t look as old as he did.

================

Logain
================
Logain Ablar - b. 972 NE, 28 (A Crown of Swords, Glossary).
He was a false Dragon in 997, (The Fires of Heaven Glossary) and began channelling shortly before declaring himself (in his mid 20s).
================

So 13-15 years channeling doesnt sound right, at the same time i doubt my point about men starting to channel much later is correct either.

They are both actually pretty young, so turns out we dont know anybody who had the spark and has been channeling for a really long time.

doshiamit: Arbitrary thought for the day - 13

May 2007<br />Thats interesting.. he is young in enough that he wouldnt be counted, and even if Moirraine saw him in the rings thingy in Rhuidean, I doubt she'd mention 3 men and a little boy.

@Marcogaidin
I buy Mat as Aemon reborn, and I agree Olvers gonna be the commander of Mats armies when he grows up. There was a a foretelling somewhere about the Last Battle done but the world not done with battle, which I think means turbulent times after the Last battle.

I was holding all my thumbs for that Aiel guy to carry Faile away into the setting sun...up until Perrin smashed his head in.

Anyway - that was one of my more ludricous (read hopeful) plot twists.

The madness is obviously real but is the wasting sickness real? As far as I remember the only times its brought up is as one of the horrors of a man channeling. And even if it does actually occur, Im fairly sure its not something that grows on its own, but is something that occurs as the man channels over time. If we think about the Male Aes Sedai, post sealing of the bore who went to live with the Ogier, they lasted a couple of hundred years, and I dont think the Steddings effects would arrest the wasting sickness. Even though the madness did not grow while they were in there that was probably because they couldnt channel, not because the effect of the taint was stopped.

MarcoGaidin: Arbitrary thought for the day - 11

April 2007<br />Perhaps I should have rephrased my Gawyn Egwene Betterman connection.
Gawyn believes for most of the series that Egwene has the hots for Galad. Eventually they find each other in the romantic sense and then Egwene seems to choose Rand (to Gawyn at least).

I can just see Gawyn with a bottle of cheap wine, singing softly to himself as he ponders the cruel twist of fate that had him fall in love with a woman that opposes the Amyrilin Seat (he helped raise) and she supports the Dragon Reborn (the man he believes killed his mother).

A bunch of different ways to accomplish pretty much the same thing, i.e. Reading the pattern.

What I think is also interesting is that how each of them have a different level of accuracy, and some like reading the dream arent necessarily going to happen. From what I remember, it seems like thats not certain to happen at all, rather its possible that it might.

It doesnt say how quickly they breed though it does say that female trollocs are breeding machines and like it that way. I dont think theres a link between them and the DO's stregnth, or at least not a direct one.

They do have a terrible success rate, but the flip side of that is that our heroes and heroines are much much much more powerful than they were at the beginning of the book.

BA:
I agree with you that the timing is odd. Perhaps it could be a mistake, though I doubt that. I also doubt that they would be able to Travel. Not even Rand is Travelling at this stage, using Portal Stones instead.
Ship seems to be the likely method, especially considering the quote as my previous post.
The Sea Folk df was a man if I'm not mistaken and from his tattoos and his lack of rings not an important one? Perhaps he could have assisted and the BA could have tried to manipulate the weather.
Remember that before Elayne finds out about the Windfinders, AS saw themselves as being really good at controlling the weather. The BA also wouldn't mind causing floods and the like by controlling the weather.

BA and where they are:
   1. Liandrin (Red) - Suroths's beeeatch
   2. Amico Nagoyin (Yellow)* - Dead
   3. Chesmal Emry (Yellow) - Captured by Elayne (KoD)
   4. Asne Zeramene (Green) - Dead
   5. Jeaine Caide (Green) - Orders from Mogy that freaks her out. She is never heard from again.
   6. Ispan Shefar (Blue)* - Dead
   7. Berylla Naron (Blue) - Orders from Mogy. She is never heard from again.
   8. Falion Bhoda (White) - Captured by Elayne
   9. Rianna Andomeran (White) - Orders from Mogy. She is never heard from again.
  10. Joiya Byir (Gray)* - Dead
  11. Temaile Kinderode (Gray) - Captured by Elayne
  12. Eldrith Jhondar (Brown) - Captured by Elayne
  13. Marillin Gemalphin (Brown) - Captured by Elayne

So where are Jeaine (freaked out), Berylla (no reaction to orders), Rianna (relieved)? A Green, a Blue and a White...
These orders are given in tFoH Chap 18.
What else is happening around this time?
Masema is getting more and more rabid around Samara. I believe there is a quote somewhere that states that hooded individuals are assisting him. BA?
The Salidar AS are getting together. And someone is beating Sheriam...Connection?
Other than that I couldn't find anything that wouldn't be totally circumstantial.

Taim, Demi and Ishy:
Yes, the order comes from all three. But remember that the order to kill Rand was a new one. And later on only Morridin is allowed to kill him.
Perhaps Taim just got fed up?
I think that Demi wouldn't bother with Masema. The man is raving mad. Taim is a better proxy and much closer to Rand.

As for finding Rand:
Fain can "smell" him - follow him wherever he goes.
Demi, Morridin and Lanfear can read people's flow in the pattern.
Also there is a possibility that there are some df's in his group that could easily let the others know.

Wow - getting carried away here.

liselle40: Arbitrary thought for the day - 8

March 2007<br />i'd read close to anything based on Mat and Tuon. that would go straight to the top on my to-be-read pile.

liselle40: Arbitrary thought for the day - 2

March 2007<br />it's still hilarious, though, doshiamit you have a point.

liselle40: So heres a question

March 2007<br />alright, so i cheated in finding out that channeling is genetic. i bought a copy of [The World of Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time]. it specifically states that channeling is genetic, but it's the recessive(that's the word!)gene.

It has always been an interesting point to me that not even the Aes Sedai of the AoL knew how stedding were made or what they were made of.
All they (and we) know is that you are unable to even sense the OP.
Perhaps the Ogier are in some way connected to the OP, while not being able to manipulate it as such.

Although: in KoD - the Ogier are debating leaving Randland...
How would they be able to do so? Portal Stones? Gateways? Both need the OP? I also always felt that the Ogier were underplayed. I think Jordan could have written a series on them alone. I knew I would buy it.

The nym returning would be cool, but someone would need to construct them. Perhaps Rand. There are prophecies of him bringing green things forth etc etc. So perhaps it could allude to that.
