Explanations:

rainpebble (1): I have read this one before & loaned it out to my grandson's English. When she moved & forgot to return it, I immediately ordered a 2nd copy. There was quite a bit of the spoof to it and several original poems and limericks thrown in (generally from the twelve maidens viewpoint) and a quite funny courtroom/trial segment at the end that made it all the more fun. I would love a group read of this book.… (more)

ulliowl (1): Love to read Atwood, so I chose this one as #1. Greek ,in fact all mythology fascinates me.

SuzieInSanDiego (1): Atwood's "The Penelopiad" looks like a witty, intellectually-layered counterpoint to my favorite novel, "Ulysses," by James Joyce. I can't wait to read what's going on in Penelope's head!… (more)

eclecticdodo (1): Atwood is a great author and this is a great book. I have no knowledge of greek mythology and I still got a lot out of it first time round but I'd really appreciate a group read with others who know more about the original myth.… (more)

RebeccaVelasquez (1): Anything that has to do with mythology has my vote. This sounds like a witty book. I'm curious to find out what really happened while Odysseus was away fighting armies, monsters and beautiful women.… (more)

annareebob (1): I have loved Atwood in the past, and want to read more of her work. I'm curious about what she has to say about the myth of Penelope and Odysseus, always looking for possible archetypes for human behavior.… (more)

jeshakespeare (3): More mythology? This only beats out Savage the Bones for the lack of animal cruelty.

LucindaLibri (4): I agree with the person who said: "I've already read it a few years ago - it was "okay", but not worth a re-read."

THCForPain (4): Mythology is for certain people. It is just not for everybody.

JacobsBeloved (4): I've already read it a few years ago - it was "okay", but not worth a re-read.

Score: 349.73

Explanations:

calm (1): The only one of the four that I want to read. I have read the Penelopiad already and don't want to read either of the other two books.

THCForPain (1): I have been wanting to read this book. This would be a great reason to.

JacobsBeloved (1): I love dystopian/apocalyptic type fiction, so this would be great!

kgriffith (1): I just added this to my library holds after reading a review without realizing it was on the short list!

Morphidae (1): This one was already on my radar.

jeshakespeare (2): A different kind of the end of the world. Coin toss on whether I'll like it.

annareebob (4): I'm put off by the futuristic setting. I could be wrong.

Explanations:

kaulsu (1): I have yet to read an Atwood I like, so it is mostly a vote against her. This book appears to have won the National Book Award, and since I read little "literature," I'll be led by those judges!… (more)

whitewavedarling (2): This sounds interesting, if somewhat predictable...I don't know if I'll purchase it in order to participate, but I'll try if it's the choice.

JacobsBeloved (2): I've come across this before and was interested then, so I would enjoy this pick.

annareebob (2): The subject of a young woman finding her way through the world interests me. Young women need strong female characters who model self-possession and growth.… (more)

jeshakespeare (4): Animal cruelty is not really something I deal with well.

Explanations:

.Monkey. (1): It's the only one my library has.

jeshakespeare (1): Sounds interesting and daring. A different choice from the past two books.

whitewavedarling (1): I've been interested in this one since I first heard about it in relation to a prize (nomination? not sure anymore), enough so that I've already purchased it. It sounds like a unique take on old themes, well worth a try.… (more)

helen.52 (1): I like the front cover The title sounds very interesting

TooBusyReading (1): A 2013 finalist for the National Book Awards, and one I already own but haven't read yet.

matthewmason (1): Countercultural Italy in the 70s'? Count me in.

timspalding (2): Relatively more interesting to me.

JacobsBeloved (3): Nothing about the plot intrigues me.

annareebob (3): Interested in the art world, but the book, judging only from LibraryThing reviews, sounds like it has a weak plot and message.
