Wellesley Booksmith: Abby Sher to greet customers and sign Amen, Amen, Amen (November 15 at 2:00pm)
Author and comedian Abby Sher will be bringing three buckets - for dangerous trash, worries, and dreams - to her book-signing event at Wellesley Booksmith. Be sure to ask her if you may contribute to them! Abby will be signing copies of her memoir, Amen Amen Amen: Memoir of a Girl Who Couldn’t ... (more)Stop Praying (Among Other Things), and generally having fun with customers on Sunday, November 15 from 2- 4 pm. Abby's memoir reveals a story of strength and solace woven into tragedy, OCD, and hope.
ABOUT THE BOOK
Until the age of ten, comedian and writer Abby Sher was a happy child like any other. But when her father and favorite aunt die in short succession, Abby is overcome with a feeling that she is somehow culpable for their deaths. She starts kissing her father’s photograph ten, twenty, then one hundred times a day. She makes up a series of repetitions and songs that she has to sing regularly to beg their forgiveness. Then, she begins picking up litter and chanting for ambulances to get to their destination swiftly and safely. It is her responsibility to protect the rest of her family, and ultimately the world, from any harm. In Amen Amen Amen: Memoir of a Girl Who Couldn’t Stop Praying (Among Other Things), her story unfolds in surprising, even humorous ways. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Porter Square Books: Mark Weiss discusses and signs The Whole Island: Six Decades of Cuban Poetry (November 15 at 3:00pm)
Mark Weiss.
Diesel, A Bookstore in Brentwood is very excited to welcome Mark Weiss to the shop to discuss and sign the anthology of poetry he edited, The Whole Island: Six Decades of Cuban Poetry.
Cuba's cultural influence throughout the Western Hemisphere, and especially in the United States, has been disproportionally ... (more)large for so small a country. This landmark volume is the first comprehensive overview of poetry written over the past sixty years. Presented in a beautiful Spanish-English en face edition, The Whole Island makes available the astonishing achievement of a wide range of Cuban poets, including such well-known figures as Nicolás Guillén, José Lezama Lima, and Nancy Morejón, but also poets widely read in Spanish who remain almost unknown to the English-speaking world - among them Fina García Marruz, José Kozer, Raúl Hernández Novás, and Ángel Escobar-and poets born since the Revolution, like Rogelio Saunders, Omar Pérez, Alessandra Molina, and Javier Marimón. The translations, almost all of them new, convey the intensity and beauty of the accompanying Spanish originals. With their work deeply rooted in Cuban culture, many of these poets - both on and off the island - have been at the center of the political and social changes of this tempestuous period. The poems offered here constitute an essential source for understanding the literature and culture of Cuba, its diaspora, and the Caribbean at large, and provide an unparalleled perspective on what it means to be Cuban.

Wellesley Booksmith: Boston Herald Sports Columnist Steve Buckley to read from and discuss Wicked Good Year (November 18 at 7:00pm)
Steve Buckley.
Sports fans delight! Join award-winning Boston Herald sports columnist Steve Buckley at Wellesley Booksmith for an insightful, celebratory look at Boston’s mega-successful 2007-2008 sports season, during which the Red Sox swept the World Series, the Patriots went undefeated during the regular season, ... (more)and the Celtics won the NBA Championship.

Boston sports fans will enjoy hearing the presentation and participating in the discussion based on Steve's new book, Wicked Good Year: How the Red Sox, Patriots, and Celtics Turned the Hub of the Universe into the Capital of Sports. ABOUT THE BOOK Steve's new book, Wicked Good Year, tells the story of the 7 months and 20 days during which the Red Sox -- proving that 2004 was no fluke -- won yet another World Series, the Patriots became the NFL’s first undefeated team in a regular season since the 1972 Miami Dolphins, and the new-look Celtics won Boston’s first NBA Championship in almost 20 years.

More than just a recitation of dates and games and stats, Wicked Good Year looks at the three teams through the eyes of the players, coaches, and team personnel and also a variety of personalities and fans, from a 38-year-old obsessed Red Sox fan with a collection of more than 5,000 autographs to pop singer/actor Donnie Wahlberg, who followed the Celtics with as much passion during the lean years as when they were playing the Lakers in the NBA Finals. Buckley’s tribute is a must-read not only for the Boston faithful looking to relive this magical time but also for the legions of sports fans wondering how exactly these three teams worked together to shed their city’s “Loserville” image. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Steve Buckley is the original sports media mogul in Boston. Also known as the “Old Time Baseball Dude”, both because of his proclivity for bringing up stories and stats from the olden days of baseball and also because of his involvement with the Oldtime Baseball Game, Steve Buckley has been a columnist with the Boston Herald since 1995, and has a long resume of sports writing experience, including a stint at the National Sports Daily. He’s also written for the Portland Press Herald, Boston Magazine and Yankee Magazine. Before it came into vogue, Buckley was making appearances on all different forms of media, writing for newspapers, hosting a TV show (on NECN) and making radio appearances on WEEI.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT): MIT COMPARATIVE MEDIA STUDIES LECTURE SERIES (November 19 at 5:00pm)
Jeff VanderMeer discusses Booklife: Strategies & Survival Tips for the 21st-Century Writer.
Booklife: The Private and the Public in Transmedia Storytelling and Self-Promotion - Fictional experiments in emerging media like Twitter and Facebook are influencing traditional printed novels and stories in interesting ways, but another intriguing new narrative is also emerging: the rise of “artifacts” ... (more)that, although they support a writer’s career, have their own intrinsic creative value. What are the benefits and dangers of a confusion between the private creativity and the public career elements of a writer’s life caused by new media and a proliferation of “open channels”? What protective measures must a writer take to preserve his or her “self” in this environment? In addition to the guerilla tactics implicit in storytelling through social media and other unconventional platforms, in what ways is a writer’s life now itself a story irrespective of intentional fictive storytelling? Examining these issues leads naturally to a discussion on the tension and cross-pollination between the private and public lives of writers in our transmedia age, including the strategies and tactics that best serve those who want to survive and flourish in this new environment. What are we losing in the emerging new paradigm, and what do we stand to gain?
