Diane Asseo Griliches, Thinking Photography
Porter Square Books, Thursday, June 20 at 7pm
With selected images, made in a variety of processes, this photographer tries to demonstrate and explain some of the many elements of photography, as well as some of the history of the art. The camera is ready, and so we are ready and anxious to possess what was seen. Since so many of us now “do photography” why not think more about how we go about it? For those making that click of the shutter, it may be helpful to understand how one practitioner goes about her work, using the eye, the mind, and the hard, and to read reflections of some great photographers. Sharing the images, as well as methods, insights and techniques is the purpose of this book, a sharing meant for anyone who takes pleasure in photography and has some curiosity about what else it might have to offer in trying to achieve the images we love to look at. Since her early teens Diane Asseo Griliches enjoyed her Brownie box camera, and the deckled-edge photos the drug store produced out of the roll of film it was give. The results were magic. Years later, allowing photography to take her away from directing community theater, she enjoyed the mysteries and magic of the dark room. Though initially reluctant, she has now entered the digital age of photography and prizes what it can produce. The gift of science to the arts just keeps giving.

Ty Burr, Gods Like Us: On Movie Stardom and Modern Fame
Porter Square Books, Wednesday, June 26 at 7pm
“Burr has both a fan’s and scholar’s grasp of the history of film, and he travels along a celluloid highway that extends from the early days of Thomas Edison to Zac Efron. Of greatest interest to the author is our evolving notion of celebrity—of what celebrities mean. . . . A focused history of films.”Kirkus Reviews “A lively anecdotal history of stardom, with all its blessings and curses for star and stargazer alike. From Mary Pickford and Charlie Chaplin to Archie Leach (a.k.a. Cary Grant) and Marion Morrison (a.k.a. John Wayne), from Tom Cruise and Julia Roberts to today’s instant celebs famous for being famous, Burr takes us on an insightful and entertaining journey through the modern fame game at its flashiest, most indulgent, most revealing and, occasionally, most tragic.” The Huffington Post Ty Burr is the film critic for The Boston Globe. For more than a decade he wrote about movies for Entertainment Weekly, and he has also served in the film acquisitions department of HBO. He estimates that after thirty years of serious movie-watching, he has seen on the order of 10,680 films. On a good day, he remembers 7,000 of them.

Tara Sullivan, Golden Boy
Porter Square Books, Thursday, June 27 at 7pm
“A commandingly written debut, Golden Boy is a moving, gorgeous account of what it means to feel profoundly different when the stakes are survival itself.” Eliot Schrefer, author of National Book Award Finalist, EndangeredGolden Boy is an amazing story of prejudice, bravery and acceptance. From the very first page, I was captivated by Habo and his struggle to find his place int he world.” Kristin Levine, author of The Lions of Little Rock Thirteen-year-old Habo has always been different— light eyes, yellow hair and white skin. Not the good brown skin his family has and not the white skin of tourists. Habo is strange and alone. His father, unable to accept Habo, abandons the family; his mother can scarcely look at him. His brothers are cruel and the other children never invite him to play. Only his sister Asu loves him well. But even Asu can’t take the sting away when the family is forced from their small Tanzanian village, and Habo knows he is to blame. Seeking refuge in Mwanza, Habo and his family journey across the Serengeti. His aunt is glad to open her home until she sees Habo for the first time, and then she is only afraid. Suddenly, Habo has a new word for himself: Albino. But they hunt albinos in Mwanza because albino body parts are thought to bring good luck. And soon Habo is being hunted by a fearsome man with a machete. To keep his life, Habo must run, not knowing if he can ever stop.

Tara Sullivan was born in India and spent her childhood living in Bangladesh, Ecuador, Bolivia and the Dominican Republic with her parents, who were international aid workers. She received a BA in Spanish literature and cognitive science from the University of Virginia, and a MA in Latin American Studies and a MPA in non-profit management from Indiana University. To research Golden Boy, Tara traveled to Tanzania, where she interviewed those working to rescue and educate Tanzanian people with albinism. She currently teachers high school Spanish and lives in Massachusetts. Golden Boy is her first novel.
