Dr Peter Klimley - The Conservation of Sharks: Sharks Beware of Humans not Humans Beware Sharks
Royal Dublin Society, Monday, September 29 at 6:30pm
For decades sharks have been vilified in the media, and due to films like 'Jaws' and over sensationalised news stories, they have a sinister reputation like no other in the marine environment. However, should humans be scared of sharks? In a talk by world renowned shark expert Dr. Peter Klimley, we will discover the true nature of the shark and the motivation behind aggressive behaviour, including some exciting real life footage.

Dr. Klimley will then address the main obstacles surrounding the conservation of different shark species, as shown by the creation of marine protected areas around the world.

Based on his knowledge of the movements of reef sharks, hammerheads, tiger, and whale sharks we will gain a rare insight into the secret life of sharks.

Dan Cruickshank - 'The Inspiration and Influence of Irish Architecture in the 18th & 19th Centuries'
Royal Dublin Society, Wednesday, October 1 at 6pm
The Royal Dublin Society and the Irish Georgian Society join forces again and are delighted to have Dan Cruickshank as their guest on this occasion. This special talk will be on the subject of the Irishness of Irish 18th and early 19th century architecture. In his presentation Dan will highlight the influences and inspiration that came directly from the continent. He will also show the influence Irish architecture had in distant lands. He will refer in detail to Limerick and New Town Pery – a creation based on a master plan by 'Sardinian' Davis Ducart. He will argue how it influenced early 19th century development in New York.

Dan Cruickshank is an art historian, author and BBC television presenter of several important and engaging series, his latest being ‘Majesty and Mortar: Britain’s Great Palaces’. Known for his special interest in the history of architecture he is an Honorary Fellow of RIBA, a member of the Executive Committee of the Georgian Group and on the Architectural Panel of the National Trust.
