Pages For All Ages Bookstore: Dr. Dan Guillory (September 13 at 2:00pm)
Dan Guillory.
Dr. Dan Guillory joins us to read and sign his book, "The Lincoln Poems." Dr. Dan Guillory, emeritus professor of English, was a member of the Millikin faculty from 1972 until 2004 when he was honored as a professor emeritus. He received his bachelor’s degree from Tulane University in 1965 and his ... (more)doctorate in 1972, also from Tulane. His post-doctoral studies were at Amherst College, City University of New York, University of Chicago, Sheffield University (England) and University of Minnesota. Guillory also has had teaching appointments at Louisiana State University (New Orleans), the University of Wisconsin and Tulane University. "In The Lincoln Poems Dan Guillory blends his scholarly knowledge about Lincoln with an imagined poetry memoir of the emotional life of Lincoln. Borrowing from the Japanese tradition of haibun, Guillory begins each entry with carefully researched prose...Then the lyrical poem leaps beyond the historical prose into a dramatic monologue...Through these poems we join in imagining the inner life and mind of Abe the boy, the young man, the autodidact, the lawyer, the husband, the friend, the father, the politician, the emancipator and the commander in chief. What a pleasure it is to go on Guillory’s guided tour of significant but transcendent moments in Lincoln’s life and to imagine what Lincoln might have expressed if he had been blessed with time to reflect on his life and write his own memoir.” —Dr. Randy Brooks, Professor of English, Millikin University “Lincoln retained a life-long interest in poetry nd prose. Dan Guillory provides his own creative take, presenting a lyrical life of Lincoln through poems.” —Thomas F. Schwartz, Ph.D., Illinois State Historian
