Newton Free Library: Captain von Trapp’s Granddaughter to Speak (August 26 at 7:30pm)
Elizabeth M. Campbell discusses To the Last Salute, by Georg von Trapp.
Elizabeth M. Campbell is the granddaughter of Captain von Trapp, the sternly portrayed father of the von Trapps in the movie, The Sound of Music. As a child she often saw a large oil portrait of her grandfather hanging in the family lodge wearing his uniform, standing at the bow of his submarine, holding ... (more)a cigarette, with his men in the background. Hearing wonderful things about him from family members and believing that the movie’s wooden, militaristic portrayal of his character was inaccurate; she read and translated his book from its original German. To the Last Salute, Memories of an Austrian U-Boat Commander brings to light the true story of Captain von Trapp; a man loyal to his Emperor, captain of Austro-Hungarian U-boats in the Mediterranean and Adriatic seas, who had a wonderful sense of humor and was a beloved commander. The book provides a window on early submarine warfare and offers a unique portrayal full of historic insight, life-and-death adventure and human interest. Ms. Campbell will give an author talk on Tuesday, August 26 at 7:30 pm. The talk will be followed by a book signing. Elizabeth M. Campbell has spent her professional life in independent schools as a teacher and administrator. She is currently the Director of Annual Giving and Communications at Cotting School in Lexington, Massachusetts. She is a cum laude graduate of Middlebury College with a B.A. and high honors in English Literature.

(more)eventually took her to the rabbinate. It’s a post-dotcom, third-wave, punk-rock Seven Storey Mountain—the story of the political implications of integrating life on the edge of the twenty-first century into the discipline of traditional Judaism without sacrificing either.
