Harvard Book Store: DANIEL PINK (January 6 at 6:00pm)
$5 tickets will go on sale starting Wed., Dec. 16 Harvard Book Store is excited to welcome business and technology writer DANIEL PINK as he explores what makes us most productive, and discusses his new book, Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us. In Drive, Pink explains that the secret ... (more)to high performance and satisfaction in today's world is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and to do better by ourselves and our world. Drawing on four decades of scientific research on human motivation, Pink exposes the mismatch between what science knows and what business does—and how that affects every aspect of our lives. He demonstrates that while the old-fashioned carrot-and-stick approach worked successfully in the 20th century, it's precisely the wrong way to motivate people for today's challenges. "Drive is the rare book that will get you to think and inspire you to act. Pink makes a strong, science-based case for rethinking motivation—and then provides the tools you need to transform your life." —Dr. Mehmet Oz (YOU: The Owner's Manual)

Harvard Book Store: ATUL GAWANDE (January 7 at 6:00pm)
Harvard Book Store is delighted to welcome surgeon and public health policy advocate ATUL GAWANDE as he discusses his new book The Checklist Manifesto: How to Get Things Right. We live in a world of great and increasing complexity, where even the most expert professionals struggle to master the tasks ... (more)they face. Longer training, ever more advanced technologies‚ neither seems to prevent grievous errors. But in a hopeful turn, acclaimed surgeon and writer Atul Gawande finds a remedy in the humblest and simplest of techniques: the checklist. First introduced decades ago by the U.S. Air Force, checklists have enabled pilots to fly aircraft of mind-boggling sophistication. Now innovative checklists are being adopted in hospitals around the world, helping doctors and nurses respond to everything from flu epidemics to avalanches. Even in the immensely complex world of surgery, a simple ninety-second variant has cut the rate of fatalities by more than a third. In riveting stories, Gawande takes us from Austria, where an emergency checklist saved a drowning victim who had spent half an hour underwater, to Michigan, where a cleanliness checklist in intensive care units virtually eliminated a type of deadly hospital infection. He explains how checklists actually work to prompt striking and immediate improvements. And he follows the checklist revolution into fields well beyond medicine, from homeland security to investment banking, skyscraper construction, and businesses of all kinds.

An open mike will be held following featured writers/artists--artists are chosen by first-come-first-serve. Please note that this ... (more)month’s TTWM is being held one week earlier than usual due to the Thanksgiving holiday. January’s featured artists: Christine Baze was born in rural upstate New York, started playing classical piano at the age of 4, and continued for the next 17 years. After college she collaborated with Boston singer songwriter John Powers in a duo called Goose, and then eventually started writing her own material. Playing in coffee shops and bars throughout the northeast, Ms. Baze developed her sound and style, finding strength in her live performances. After being diagnosed with invasive cervical cancer, Ms. Baze started a non-profit organization called Popsmear.org (now www.theYELLOWUMBRELLA.org) to raise awareness about preventing cervical cancer, and founded The Yellow Umbrella Tour as a way to get the message out to women everywhere. The Yellow Umbrella Tour has made 89 stops around the country and Ms. Baze has had over 100 speaking gigs. Since kicking cancer's ass and releasing her album Something New (2006), she proved herself as a songwriter and a warrior. She has shared the stage with Ben Folds, The Fray, Kaki King, Sarah Bettens and K's Choice, Duncan Sheik, The Dan Band, Michele Shocked, Catie Curtis and many others. Her down tempo, groovy songs parallel her passion for life, realness of emotion, and the ability to find strength and beauty within oneself, no matter what. Diane Kendig has worked for over twenty-five years as a poet and writer, translator, and teacher. Her poetry has been published in two chapbooks, A Tunnel of Flute Song (Cleveland State Poetry Center) and Diane Kendig’s Greatest Hits (Pudding House) as well as over fifty journals, including Colere, Minnesota Review, Poetry Midwest, Slant, Poemeleon, and anthologies such as Grrr: A Collection of Poems About Bears, Modern Poems of Ohio, and Broken Land: Poems of Brooklyn. In addition to poetry, she has published creative nonfiction and fiction in journals and anthologies such as Ariadne’s Thread: A Collection of Contemporary Women’s Journals, From the Heartlands: Photos and Essays from the Midwest, and Those Winter Sundays: Female Academics and Their Working-Class Parents. As a translator, she published poems from the Nicaraguan poetry workshop movement, including a bilingual chapbook of Nicaraguan poems with photos by Steve Cagan. From 1984 to 2002, she was a member of the English Department at The University of Findlay in Findlay, Ohio, where she developed the department’s creative writing emphasis and its visiting writers series. The Places We Find Ourselves is her third poetry chapbook.
