Welcome to Secret Garden's book club for readers 8-12! It's a regular EVERY-THIRD-WEDNESDAY-AND-FRIDAY thing! Young Readers Society has grown so much over its' first year, that starting with this month, we're going to offer the club the 3rd Wednesday, as usual, AND the 3rd Friday! Come to whichever meeting works best in your schedule! We always serve piping hot FREE pizza.

We choose books that will interest both boys and girls, especially in this age bracket.

This month's book is The Luck of the Buttons.

We would ask you to encourage your kids to come to society meetings even if they aren’t necessarily interested in the book. As long as they’re interested in reading, we’ll be happy to have them.

Young Readers’ Society is about giving kids a safe place to talk about books and reading and to express their opinions openly. Parents will be encouraged to browse the shop, or grab a bite to eat in Ballard, but as far as the Society goes – no grown-ups allowed!

Seattle Times science reporter Sandi Doughton has written the definitive book on what is expected to be the biggest earthquake in the continental United States, one that some scientists argue it may be overdue. Bainbridge Island author Bruce Barcott will join us to lead a discussion on Full Rip 9.0: The Next Big Earthquake in the Pacific Northwest.

The culprit is the Cascadia subduction zone: a 750-mile-long creeping giant that runs along the Pacific coast from Northern California up to British Columbia. Though the Pacific Northwest has been mostly quiet for hundreds of years, it is capable of producing an earthquake sixty times as powerful as the 1906 quake that flattened San Francisco. It’s a harsh wake-up call for a region previously considered a “seismological backwater” whose earthquake research only began in earnest in the 1980s. Since then, the Pacific Northwest has been the epicenter of some of the world’s most exciting earthquake discoveries.

Doughton delves into the fascinating and often terrifying world of “The Big One.” She introduces readers to the scientists who are dedicated to understanding the way the earth moves and describes what patterns can be identified and how prepared (or not) people are in the region’s urban centers of Seattle, Portland, and Vancouver.

Well, as usual, there really is no way to succinctly note a Hiaasen plot and this one is no different: a cop on Health Inspector duties who is hoping to get hired by the Key West department, a kinky medical examiner, a human arm in the freezer and the ‘twitchy’ widow of the owner, a vivacious voodoo witch, an idiotic and greedy developer and - oh yeah - a devious, talented and troublesome monkey. Sounds like the expected and standard Hiaasenian lunacy!
