Becky Murphy and Megan Silianoff
Blue Willow Bookshop, Wednesday, July 16 at 7pm
What: Becky Murphy and Megan Silianoff will discuss and sign their books. When: Wednesday, July 16, 7:00 pm Where: Blue Willow Bookshop, 14532 Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77079 Admission: In order to go through the signing line and meet Becky Murphy and Megan Silianoff for book personalization, please purchase one of their books from Blue Willow Bookshop. At the time of your purchase, we will issue a signing line ticket that indicates your place in line. Your book and signing line ticket can be picked up at the event. About the Authors: Becky Murphy is a freelance illustrator and graphic designer living in Austin, Texas. She grew up in small-town Iowa, honed her craft at Iowa State, then, like a bird, moved south. Becky will high-five if provoked, but don't make her jump to reach it. You can see more of her work on her site, chipperthings.com. Megan Silianoff is a writer best known for her debut memoir, 99 PROBLEMS BUT A BABY AIN’T ONE and her humorous blog called Greetings from Texas. Megan resides in Houston, Texas with her husband Danny, daughter Macy, and dog Booker. The book is currently in the process of being adapted into a screenplay. About the Books: I’D RATHER BE SHORT Graphic designer Becky Murphy is five-foot-nothing and proud to be petite. Sure, sometimes being diminutive gets you the short end of the stick, but there are also plenty of unique advantages to being under 5’4”—and Murphy has compiled the 100 best reasons in the delightfully whimsical I’D RATHER BE SHORT. Illustrated in a charming, quirky style, I’D RATHER BE SHORT highlights the benefits of being petite, from the sensible to the absurd. 99 PROBLEMS BUT A BABY AIN’T ONE Megan Silianoff’s story begins when she is diagnosed with ovarian cancer at age 28. Horrified by the way friends and family fall apart upon hearing the news, Megan innately realizes she has to keep it together for their benefit. She starts a blog about her ongoing prognosis and writes in a very flippant, casual, and hilarious manner. Upon beating her first round of cancer, Megan and her husband begin pursuing domestic adoption. Though they are considered a family-in-waiting for almost two years, the adoption itself is completed in five days from meeting the birthparent, to witnessing the baby’s birth, to naming her after Megan’s favorite rapper, Jay-Z. Ordering: A limited number of autographed copies of Becky and Megan’s books will be available for purchase after the event. If you cannot attend the event, and would like a personalized copy of her book, please call us before the event at (281) 497-8675. Speak!Poet
Brazos Bookstore, Sunday, July 20 at 2pm
Speak!Poet, the innovative new poetry and interview series, continues its 2014 program with its second event Sunday, July 20, 2-3 p.m. at Brazos Bookstore. Featured readers are Dulce “Digh” Veluthukaran and Jonathan Moody.

Speak!Poet breaks the mold of conventional poetry readings by expanding the event to include a discussion with the poets on their work and its processes. The discussion includes audience participation. Speak!Poet is moderated by Winston Derden, who co-produces the event with Stephen Gros. The event is free and open to the public.

“There is a wonderfully strong and diverse reading environment in Houston,” Derden said. “Speak!Poet addresses an aspect of the Houston poetry scene I felt was lacking. Speak!Poet takes the traditional poetry readings a step farther by allowing the poets to discuss their poems and their approach to writing — and the Q&A after the interview opens that discussion to the Gros said, “I liked the idea behind Speak!Poet right away. The setting is intimate, and the opportunity for the poets to explore and explain their work with an audience takes this reading to another level. There is an immediacy to a live discussion of poetry that can bring discovery and insight — even surprise.”
