Cynthia Kadohata
Blue Willow Bookshop, Tuesday, September 23 at 5pm
What: National Book Award winner Cynthia Kadohata will discuss and sign Half a World Away, her new novel for children. When: Tuesday, September 23, 5:00 pm Where: Blue Willow Bookshop, 14532 Memorial Drive, Houston, Texas, 77079 Admission: In order to go through the signing line and meet Cynthia Kadohata, please purchase Half a World Away from Blue Willow Bookshop. At the time of your purchase, we will issue a signing line ticket that indicates your place in line. Your book and signing line ticket can be picked up at the event. About the Author: Cynthia Kadohata is the author of the Newbery Medal–winning book KIRA-KIRA, the National Book Award winner THE THING ABOUT LUCK, the Jane Addams Peace Award and Pen USA Award winner WEEDFLOWER, and several critically acclaimed adult novels, including THE FLOATING WORLD. She lives with her son and dog in West Covina, California Book: Eleven-year-old Jaden is adopted, and he knows he's an "epic fail.” He’s sure that's why his family is traveling to Kazakhstan to adopt a new baby--to replace him. And he gets it. He is incapable of stopping his stealing, hoarding, lighting fires, aggressive running, and obsession with electricity. He knows his parents love him, but he feels...nothing. But when they get to Kazakhstan, it turns out the infant they've chosen has already been adopted, and literally, within minutes, they are faced with having to choose from among six other babies. While his parents agonize, Jaden is more interested in the toddlers. One, a little guy named Dimash, spies Jaden and barrels over to him every time he sees him. Jaden finds himself increasingly intrigued by and worried about Dimash. Already three years old and barely able to speak, Dimash will soon age out of the orphanage, and then his life will be as hopeless as Jaden feels now. For the first time in his life, Jaden actually feels something that isn't pure blinding fury, and there's no way to control it, or its power. From camels rooting through garbage like raccoons to eagles being trained like hunting dogs, to streets that are more pothole than pavement, ALF A WORLD AWAY is Cynthia Kadohata's latest spark of a novel. Ordering: A limited number of autographed copies of Cynthia’s book will be available for purchase after the event. If you cannot attend the event, and would like a personalized copy of her book, please call us before the event at (281) 497-8675. Read Dangerously: A Day with Banned Books
Brazos Bookstore, Saturday, September 27 at 2pm
Books get banned every day.

Sometimes the reasons are political. Sometimes the reasons are social. Sometimes books are banned unread simply because of dangerous content they supposedly contain. In our free society, banning books should be unacceptable. But it happens all the time.

September 21-27 is Banned Books Week, and Brazos Bookstore is doing its part with Read Dangerously: A Day with Banned Books. This event is a partnership of Brazos Bookstore, Spindletop/Workhorse, and Gulf Coast.

From 2pm to 6pm, a letterpress printing demonstration will be on-site at Brazos. Decode censored messages with special 3D-style glasses created by Houston-based graphic designer Spindletop Design and letterpress printer Workhorse Printmakers! These will be beautiful, limited edition items, and they’ll be for sale. You’ll want to swing by and pick one up for sure.

Then, starting at 6pm, we will have a banned books reading, co-sponsored by Gulf Coast, University of Houston’s legendary literary journal. The reading will feature members of the Gulf Coast staff, University of Houston creative writing students, and local literary luminaries sharing passages from their favorite banned books. For this evening program, there will be beer.

This is a fun, informal way to draw attention to an important issue. Please join us and make community.
