ABOUT THE AUTHOR The author owns Ronald Ringsrud Co. (a wholesale emerald importing business) of Saratoga, California, and Bogota, Colombia. Ron has dealt exclusively in emeralds for 25 years. Since 1993 he has maintained a second home in downtown Bogotá, Colombia, close to the famous emerald district. He has been host and guide in Bogotá for foreign buyers as well as groups from the L.A. County Museum of Natural History and the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) on their trips to Colombian emerald sources. His familiarity with the remote Colombian emerald mining region has been described by journalist Montgomery Chitty this way: “Rather like the way that American Indians had a wary respect for some of the craziest white settlers whose actions demonstrated a wildness akin to their own, the Colombians in the emerald mining region of have developed a respect for Mr. Ringsrud.” Ron Ringsrud was a featured speaker on emeralds at the GIA International Gemological Symposium in 1991, and the First World Emerald Congress in Bogotá. His writing has appeared in numerous gem trade journals, including Gems & Gemology, the prestigious quarterly publication of GIA. Ron Ringsrud will meet people and sign books between 5:00PM and 9:00PM, with a talk on Colombian Emeralds at 7:30PM. Refreshments will be served and a kilo of fresh-roasted Colombian coffee beans will be given as a door prize to one lucky person.
