Book Signing & Discussion w/Kristopher Jansma Book Signing & Discussion with author Kristopher Jansma The Unchangeable Spots of Leopards Friday, May 24th @ 7 PM Here's what people at Viking and Penguin have been saying... "As a Penguin rep in the San Francisco Bay area for twenty-three years, I've read a lot of debut fiction.. In all that time there have only been a handful of novels that have captivated me as much as The Unchangeable Spots of Leopards. This is one of the best, smartest, most mind-bending--and often humorous--books I've read in a long, long time. I literally could not put it down. And when I finally did... I picked it up to re-read it. Seriously. It's that wonderful." --Wendy Pearl, Sales Rep, Oakland, CA "The Unchangeable Spots of Leopards is full of whimsy, mirth and real love. Kristopher Jansma has created a narrator that we never fully trust but I want to follow as he crosses the globe in search of the stories that he has lost. It's unlike anything I have ever read but at the same time feels like a book I've loved forever." --Andrew Dudley, Digital Account Manager "It's been a long time since I fell in love with characters in a novel the way I did with Kristopher Jansma's in The Unchangeable Spots of Leopards. I was reminded of Gatsby, Holden Caulfield and The Dead Poet's Society. This is the best book I've read in years." -- Ben Petrone, Associate Director of Publicity "I didn't mean to go through The Unchangeable Spots of Leopards over a weekend, but once I started reading, I couldn't stop. Just when you think you've got things figured out, you are transported not only to another part of the world, but a whole new side of the story." -- Risa Chubinsky, Subsidary Rights Manager "I think there's one line from The Unchangeable Spots of Leopards that describes it best: 'Tell all the Truth but tell it slant.' The truth is definitely fleeting in this story. The one true thing I do know is that this is one of the best books I've ever read about what it's like to be young, to grow up, to fall in love with the wrong people (and to love and leave the right ones), and to accept who you are." -- Chris Smythe, Digital Business Director "Kristopher Jansma has managed an impressive bit of magic. Somehow he has created a book that is both page-turning and thought-provoking; both beautifully written and gritty." -- Timothy Lane, Subsidary Rights Coordinator "The Unchangeable Spots of Leopards reminds me of my favorite pieces of magical realism, but it's the characters that have stayed with me. The effect is kaleidoscopic, and it leaves the reader both dazzled and bereft each time the image shifts." --Taylor Sperry, Editorial Assistant "I read The Unchangeable Spots of Leopards twice. Not only that, I savored it each time. Jansma has built characters the way life builds people, with bricks made of experiences, impressions, flavors, misunderstandings, absurdities, broken hearts, compromises, laughter, moments of clarity, stretches of haze--characters who embody complexity so fully, it's as if I not only know, I've grown to know many versions of them. Jansma can't write another book fast enough." --Kristin Spang, Publishing Coordinator Digg Facebook Google Technorati del.icio.us

Book Signing w/Bee Ridgway Book Signing & Discussion with Bee Ridgway Saturday May 25th @ 1:30pm "A remarkable medley of historical fiction, romance, adventure, and fantasy, Bee Ridgway’s debut novel, The River of No Return is as imaginative as it is exhilarating. As a love story tangled up in the laws of time, “bookish fantasy fans who make it a point to keep up with Doctor Who will like this one” (Kirkus). “In her stellar debut, Ridgway manages the permutations of the time‐travel trope with originality and aplomb.” – Booklist “Ridgway offers a well‐crafted blend of science fiction, romance, mystery, and historical fiction…” – Publishers Weekly
In Bee Ridgway’s wonderfully imaginative debut novel, a man and a woman travel through time in a quest to bring down a secret society that controls the past and, thus, the future.
“You are now a member of the Guild. There is no return.”
Two hundred years after he was about to die on a Napoleonic battlefield, Lord Nicholas Falcott wakes up in a hospital bed in twenty-first century London. The Guild, a secretive organization that controls time travel, helps him make a new life in the modern world.
But Nick yearns for home and for one beautiful woman in particular, now lost to history.
Back in 1815, that very woman, Julia Percy, finds herself the guardian of a family secret inherited from her enigmatic grandfather... how to manipulate time. But there are those who seek to possess Julia’s power and she begins to realize she is in the gravest peril.
The Guild’s rules are made to be broken, and Nick discovers how to travel back to the nineteenth century and his ancestral home. Fate and the fraying fabric of time draw Nick and Julia together once again . . . soon enough, they are caught up in an adventure that puts the future of the world into their hands.
Love endures the gulf of centuries . . . and so does danger. As gripping as it is evocative, The River of No Return is a sweeping story of lovers who match wits and gamble their hearts against the rules of time itself. www.beeridgway.com About the Author Bee Ridgway holds a PhD in Literature from Cornell University and is a professor of English literature at Bryn Mawr College. She lived in England for several years and now makes her home in Philadelphia. This is her first novel.

A Reading with Bill Whiting Bill Whiting is the author of An Early Work Late in Life: The Art and Life of Danny Allen (Faux Fragments, $29.95 pb). This is the true story of the life and untimely death of an exceptionally talented young artist named Daniel Arthur Allen. When one of Dan's mysterious, jewel-like paintings was discovered in the vault of a major museum nearly four decades after his death, artist Bill Whiting began to write about his life with Danny in Rochester, New York, in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when the sexual revolution, drugs, gay liberation, and antiwar protests made everyday life anything but predictable. Sometimes raucous and funny, sometimes heartbreaking, An Early Work Late in Life is a tribute to a wonderful, quirky, and gentle young man who might have been a little too good for this world--and believed he could exit this life and move on to a better one all on his own. OFF SITE Book Signing w/Gwen Cooper Book Signing with New York Times Bestselling Author Gwen CooperSunday June 2nd @ 12:30pm Please Note: This is an Out of Store Event
Event Location: Red Paw Animal Shelter 2501 Wharton Street Philadelphia, Pa 19146 For more infomation about Red Paw please visit: http://www.redpawemergencyreliefteam.org/ About the Book Humans best understand the truth of things if they come at it indirectly. Like how sometimes the best way to catch a mouse that’s right in front of you is to back up before you pounce. So notes Prudence, the irresistible brown tabby at the center of Gwen Cooper’s tender, joyful, utterly unforgettable novel, which is mostly told through the eyes of this curious (and occasionally cranky) feline. When five-week-old Prudence meets a woman named Sarah in a deserted construction site on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, she knows she’s found the human she was meant to adopt. For three years their lives are filled with laughter, tuna, catnaps, music, and the unchanging routines Prudence craves. Then one day Sarah doesn’t come home. From Prudence’s perch on the windowsill she sees Laura, the daughter who hardly ever comes to visit Sarah, arrive with her new husband. They’re carrying boxes. Before they even get to the front door, Prudence realizes that her life has changed forever. Suddenly Prudence finds herself living in a strange apartment with humans she barely knows. It could take years to train them in the feline courtesies and customs (for example, a cat should always be fed before the humans, and at the same exact time every day) that Sarah understood so well. Prudence clings to the hope that Sarah will come back for her while Laura, a rising young corporate attorney, tries to push away memories of her mother and the tumultuous childhood spent in her mother’s dusty downtown record store. But the secret joys, past hurts, and life-changing moments that make every mother-daughter relationship special will come to the surface. With Prudence’s help Laura will learn that the past, like a mother’s love, never dies. Poignant, insightful, and laugh-out-loud funny, Love saves the day is a story of hope, healing, and how the love of an animal can make all of us better humans. It’s the story of a mother and daughter divided by the turmoil of bohemian New York, and the opinionated, irrepressible feline who will become the bridge between them. It’s a novel for anyone who’s ever lost a loved one, wondered what their cat was really thinking, or fallen asleep with a purring feline nestled in their arms. Prudence, a cat like no other, is sure to steal your heart. About the Author Gwen Cooper is the New York Times bestselling author of the memoir Homer’s Odyssey: A Fearless Feline Tale, or How I Learned About Love and Life with a Blind Wonder Cat and the novel Diary of a South Beach Party Girl. She is active with numerous animal welfare organizations. Gwen lives in Manhattan with her husband, Laurence. She also lives with her three perfect cats—Homer, Clayton, and Fanny—who aren’t impressed with any of it. For more info please visit Digg">www.gwencooper.com/

A Reading with Samuel R. Delany Samuel R. Delany will read from the new edition of his historical novel, Phallos (Wesleyan, $19.95 pb). Taking the form of a gay pornographic novella, with the explicit sex omitted, Phallos is set during the reign of the second-century Roman emperor Hadrian, and circles around the historical account of the murder of the emperor's favorite, Antinous. The story moves from Syracuse to Egypt, from the Pillars of Hercules to Rome, from Athens to Byzantium, and back. Young Neoptolomus searches after the stolen phallus of the nameless god of Hermopolis, crafted of gold and encrusted with jewels, within which are reputedly the ancient secrets of science and society that will lead to power, knowledge, and wealth. Vivid and clever, the original novella has been expanded by nearly a third. Appended to the text are an afterword by Robert F. Reid-Pharr and three astute speculative essays by Steven Shaviro, Kenneth R. James, and Darieck Scott.

Sign & Storytime w/Susan Demilia Sign & Storytime w/ Susan Demilia The first Wednesday of every month @ 10:00am Sign and Story Time is a thirty minute class for children at least 6 months of age and their caregivers. On the first Wednesday of each month we will choose a story and learn some signs that go along with that story. The children will then get to help tell the story by using the signs as we read. Interactive story time is not only fun but also helps build language and motor skills!
Each class we will touch on ways parents can help develop language skills, through sign and play, at different ages.
Susan DeMilia is a certified speech language pathologist with twenty years of experience working with children and families. She owns a speech and language therapy practice that serves the children of the Greater Philadelphia area. She is delighted to devote her professional life to helping children express themselves in many ways-- through signs and words and stories. Sign language is an educational and unique way to help your child “talk” before he can talk. Signs help develop your baby’s vocabulary and social skills. Using signs can help your baby tell you what she wants and needs. Maybe there will even be a fewer tantrums in your future!
