A Sample Poem

WUNDERKIND In front of Wunderlich’s hardware store in Brooklyn a youth, from the bag of tricks carried by every street urchin in those long ago days when not every child had the means and ways to succeed & some grew wild, a new bottle of Mr. Clean. He offered it up for sale to someone not yet weaned from his mother, assailed my sight with the bald headed smiling monster bearing green liquid; mauled my right and wrong, Her voice in my head, saying: “For fifty cents a bargain. Why in the store you’d be paying a whole lot more!” To feign innocence of where he had gotten it, the dead end kid waiting for me to decide, bad only on the surface, did me no good. And my mother would not have approved of the transaction, no other choice but to spurn, and soothe my conscience before the fact. For a boy torn between a rock and a hard place, incredible tact saying no. And it starts the clock. Biography Lewis Frederick Crystal is a poet and novelist who grew up in Brooklyn, New York and presently resides in Doylestown, PA. He is the author of four novels-THE THIEVES OF YOUTH, WHEN SIX WAS NINE, 1976:A BICENTENNIAL NOVEL and BOOKSELLER BLUES, YOU MADE ME CRY and six books of poetry- THE HORSES OF MARRUM, PICTURES FOR A SUNDAY AFTERNOON, GREATEST HITS, UNSOLVED MYSTERIES OF CHILDHOOD, THE PAST IS INEVITABLE and A HISTORY OF SEX & OTHER ASPECTS OF LOVE. Mr. Crystal also publishes the work of other writers via his AVENUE U PUBLICATIONS. In 2012 AVENUE U published works of poetry and fiction, a non-fiction memoir and a cookbook. They also published four issues of a magazine of poetry and fiction called FM.

Joseph Fox Bookshop, Monday, June 24 at 7:30pm
The Riddle of the Labyrinth: The Quest to Crack an Ancient Code Margalit Fox An award-winning journalist originally trained as a linguist, Margalit Fox is a senior writer at the New York Times. When archaeologist Arthur Evans unearthed the ruins of a sophisticated Bronze Age civilization that flourished on Crete, he discovered a cache of clay tablets written in 1450 B.C. Fox’s new book The Riddle of the Labyrinth blends history, linguistics, and cryptology, in telling the story of the 50-year quest to decipher the mysterious ancient script known as Linear B found on these tablets. She is also the author of Talking Hands: What Sign Language Reveals About the Mind, the story of a remote Bedouin village with an unusually high incidence of deafness where relative isolation enabled the creation of an indigenous sign language.
