Sue Ann Jaffarian and Naomi Hirahara Sign in San Diego
Mysterious Galaxy, Saturday, April 26 at 12pm
Sue Ann Jaffarian Naomi Hirahara

As the Berkley Prime Crime imprint celebrates its 20th anniversary, MGSD is delighted to host a pair of Prime Crime local authors at high noon.

With three mystery series under her belt and a career as a paralegal, one might wonder when Sue Ann Jaffarian has downtime. Sue Ann waited until 1995 to undertake a career as a novelist, becoming a dedicated writer, and completing two novels before switching to the genre of mystery. With a background as a paralegal, writing mysteries seemed to fall into place. Ghost of a Gamble is the sixth book in the popular Ghost of Granny Apples Mystery series.

Naomi Hirahara’s first book, Summer of the Big Bachi, was not only a finalist for Barbara Kingsolver’s Bellwether Prize, but was also a nominee for a Macavity mystery award. Not bad for a debut! The former reporter and editor for The Rafu Shimpo wrote four more books in the Mas Arai series. Naomi’s latest book, Murder on Bamboo Lane, is the first book in the Officer Ellie Rush series, and features a 22-year-old LAPD bicycle cop. (See Sarah’s review on our website.)

California Bookstore Day in San Diego!
Mysterious Galaxy, Saturday, May 3 at 10am
What is Bookstore Day?

California Bookstore Day, on Saturday May 3, 2014, is a project of the Northern and Southern California Independent Booksellers Associations, representing more than 300 bookstores.

We believe indie bookstores are an essential part of lively communities, the free-flow of ideas, and the thrill of discovery.

CBD will harness the creative power of authors and publishers in a giant celebration of the written word that will drive readers to brick-and-mortar bookstores. For one day, and one day only, a number of very limited-edition, unique, word-based items and books will be available in more than 100 independent stores across the state. These aren’t your run-of-the-mill signed first editions—these are literature-based art projects, unique books, and collector’s items created for this event only.

To learn more, visit California Bookstore Day's Facebook page. To donate, visit the Indiegogo campaign page. Kimberly Derting Alyson Noel Margaret Stohl

Among the authors gracing our store on California Bookstore Day will be Kimberly Derting, author of The Taking; Alyson Noël, author of Horizon; and Margaret Stohl, author of Icons.
