Margaret Coel Signs in San Diego
Mysterious Galaxy, Friday, September 5 at 7pm
Since 1995, Father John O’Malley and Arapaho attorney Vicky Holden, the stars of the Wind River Reservation Mysteries series, have been solving crimes and setting things right. They are back in their eighteenth outing, Margaret Coel’s Night of the White Buffalo. Rancher Dennis Carey is found dead in his truck on the highway. While news of his death is shocking, it’s made all the more intriguing with the revelation that the most sacred of all beasts in Native American folklore, the white buffalo calf, had recently been born on his ranch. A Colorado native, and one who proclaims that mountains, plains, and vast spaces are “in her bones,” Coel is the perfect author for these thrilling novels.

When she’s not working as a temp attorney and author, she can be found freelancing book reviews and contributing food writing for The Los Angeles Times. John Scalzi Signs in San Diego
Mysterious Galaxy, Monday, September 8 at 7pm
Award-winning writer and bestselling author John Scalzi is also an active and passionate voice in the fan community, mostly through his long-running blog titled “Whatever.” With the Hugo, the Locus, the Seiun and Kurd Lasswitz awards under his belt, and with books available in 20 languages, Scalzi has become one of the most recognized voices in speculative fiction. Lock In, his newest novel set fifteen years in the future, finds the population split by a nasty virus, with one percent being “locked in”: fully aware yet unable to move or speak. When new technology allows for those locked in to communicate with others, and at times control others, things get complicated . . . especially when murder is involved.

Lock In is our September Fantastic First Pick for Speculative Fiction.

This is a numbered event – numbers for the signing line are free with the purchase of Lock In from Mysterious Galaxy, available August 26th, starting at 10 AM!

If you are planning to attend the event, please do not place your order through the web site as all such orders are processed after the event. Instead, please contact the store and purchase the book on or after the on-sale date.

Kenneth Turan At the Luxe Sunset Boulevard Hotel
Mysterious Galaxy, Wednesday, September 10 at 10am
Kenneth Turan is the film critic for The Los Angeles Times and NPR’s “Morning Edition,” and a brave one at that. Never afraid of the unpopular opinion, Turan took a stand against global phenomenon “Titanic,” and wrote a review so icy that director James Cameron challenged him publicly, asking “forget about Clinton — how do we impeach Kenneth Turan?” Such ire did not deter Kenneth’s writing, and he has forged on with both reviews and books, the latest of which is Not to be Missed: Fifty-four Favorites from a Lifetime of Film. From “All About Eve” to “Seven Samurai,” Kenneth offers insight to each movie’s historical and cultural significance.

Registration is required and breakfast is included. Please call the RB store for more information.
