Saturday Author Salon featuring Giovanni Scialpa All are welcome to meet retired Rochester barber and author, Giovannni Scialpa, who will be signing copies of his book.... My Sweet Valentine. The book is due for release in May and Lift Bridge will have copies available for purchase as soon as the book is released. Giovanni has a great singing voice as well. Gio to match is Signed books make great gifts!! Born in Sicily just before WWII started, Giovanni being a bit of a Renaissance man experienced losses and tragedy when it hit the Scialpa family. Through or even because of sickness and those losses Giovanni kept his dream through it all. I have always wanted to write a story but early in my life, I didn’t take it seriously. I was born in Italy in the city of Piazza Armenian Sicily, famous today for being the site of a restored villa romana found in the late 1950’s. People come from all around the world to see it. I lived there until I was 13 and started learning the trade of being a barber by my cousin Carmelo. In 1950, my family moved to Belgium because there was no work in Sicily. My father worked as a coal miner and sacrificed a lot to support us. I enjoyed living there and learned to speak French. In 1956 when I was 19, I went to Toronto, Canada with big ideas and looking for new opportunities. I was a barber but I wanted to write. I also took singing lessons because I always dreamed of being a singer. I left for Rochester, NY in 1961 where my future wife lived and where I live today. I enjoy this city very much. It gave me a good opportunity for work and it was a smaller city than Toronto, which I liked. Even if we have to pay New York State taxes! I think it is one of the best cities in the United States, and my land of opportunity. I have been here in my barbershop on the corner of Lyle Ave and Mt Read Blvd. now for over 40 years and have met many wonderful people. On occasion, a friend would come by once a week with his guitar and we would serenade the customers with our singing and playing while I cut their hair. Everyone enjoyed it. Sometimes people would joke that I should charge extra for my haircuts because I was providing entertainment. I said it was on the house and they would laugh. I also have another good customer who comes in and jokes, “If you don’t play the Italian music, I won’t pay you.” I have good customers and many stories I could tell. All these years barbering, I have wanted to write but the time was never right. I had a family to raise and responsibilities. Sometimes as a barber, I would feel like a priest, listening to confessions, helping to comfort people but then that’s part of being a good barber. So now, it seems this is the right time to write and I really enjoy the process. Now At Age 76 I am a published author of two romance novels, and singer /writer/and composer of many songs. There seemed to be an invisible force behind me that propelled me to write these stories, which is both truth and fiction.
