Lily Koppel-"The Astronaut Wives Club"
Warwick's, Saturday, June 22 at 7pm
Bestselling author of The Red Leather Diary, Lily Koppel will be at Warwick's on Saturday, June 22nd at 7:00pm to discuss and sign The Astronaut Wives Club.

As America's Mercury Seven astronauts were launched on death-defying missions, television cameras focused on the brave smiles of their young wives. Overnight, these women were transformed from military spouses into American royalty. They had tea with Jackie Kennedy, appeared on the cover of Life magazine, and quickly grew into fashion icons.

Annie Glenn, with her picture-perfect marriage, was the envy of the other wives; platinum-blonde Rene Carpenter was proclaimed JFK's favorite; and licensed pilot Trudy Cooper arrived on base with a secret. Together with the other wives they formed The Astronaut Wives Club, meeting regularly to provide support and friendship. Many became next-door neighbors and helped to raise each other's children by day, while going to glam parties at night as the country raced to land a man on the Moon.

As their celebrity rose-and as divorce and tragic death began to touch their lives-they continued to rally together, and the wives have now been friends for more than fifty years. The Astronaut Wives Club tells the real story of the women who stood beside some of the biggest heroes in American history.

Edith Maxwell and Dorothy Howell Sign in Redondo Beach
Mysterious Galaxy, Sunday, June 23 at 2:30pm
Edith Maxwell

Dorothy Howell Former freelance journalist, medical lext editor, and linguist Edith Maxwell has had quite a few careers under her belt. Edith used her own experience as a farmer combined with her background in linguistics to write the character Cam Flaherty in A Tine to Live, A Tine to Die, the first book in Local Foods Mysteries series. Edith also writes as Tace Baker, and again uses her linguistic studies to create Quaker Linguistics professor, Lauren Rousseau in the Speaking of Mystery series. Dorothy Howell has more than 33 novels under her designer belt, but it wasn't until she heard about the horrors of working in retail, from her daughter, that she was inspired to write Handbags and Homicide, the first Haley Randolph mystery. It was Dorothy's passion for purses and handbags that inspired the theme throughout the books. Fortunately for fans, as far as we know, there is no rehab for Dorothy's addiction and she continues with the seventh book in the Haley Randolph mystery series with Evening Bags and Executions.

Walter Walker-"Crime of Privilege"
Warwick's, Tuesday, June 25 at 7pm
Warwick's in partnership with The La Jolla Library and the San Diego Law Library presents acclaimed thriller writer, Walter Walker who will discuss and sign his thriller Crime of privilege on Tuesday, June 25th at 7:00pm at the La Jolla Library, 7555 Draper Ave. as part of the San Diego Law Library's Writers & the Law series. Reserved Seating is available, please call the Warwick's Book Dept. for details.

In the tradition of Scott Turow, William Landay, and Nelson DeMille, Crime of privilege is a stunning thriller, about power, corruption, and the law in America—and the dangerous ways they come together.

Two heinous crimes: A murder on Cape Cod. A rape in Palm Beach. All they have in common is the presence of one of America’s most celebrated and influential families. But nobody is asking questions. Not the police. Not the prosecutors. And certainly not George Becket, a young lawyer toiling away in the basement of the Cape & Islands District Attorney’s office. George has always lived at the edge of power. He wasn’t born to privilege, but he understands how it works and has benefitted from it in ways he doesn’t like to admit. Now, an investigation brings him deep inside the world of the truly wealthy—and shows him what a perilous place it is. Years have passed since a young woman was found brutally slain at an exclusive Cape Cod Country Club, and no one has ever been charged. Cornered by the victim’s father, George can’t explain why certain leads were never explored—leads that point in the direction of a single family—and he agrees to look into it.

What begins as a search through the highly stratified layers of Cape Cod society, soon has George racing from Idaho to Hawaii, Costa Rica to France to New York City. Everywhere he goes he discovers people like himself: people with more secrets than answers, people haunted by a decision years past to trade silence for protection from life’s sharp edges. George finds his friends are not necessarily still friends and a spouse can be unfaithful in more ways than one. And despite threats at every turn, he is driven to reconstruct the victim’s last hours while searching not only for a killer but for his own redemption.

Best friends and seventh graders Sophie Young and Grace Yang have made a game out of spying on their neighbors. On one of their midnight stakeouts, they witness a terrifying, bloody scene at the home of their bizarre middle-school counselor Dr. Charlotte Agford (also known as Dr. Awkward).

At least, they think they do. The truth is that Dr. Agford was only making her famous pickled beets. But when Dr. Agford begins acting even weirder than usual, Sophie and Grace become convinced that she’s hiding something—and they’re determined to find out what it is.

Soon the girls are breaking secret codes, being followed by a strange blue car, and tailing strangers with unibrows and Texas accents. But as their investigation heats up, Sophie and Grace start to crack under the pressure. Will solving the case destroy their friendship?

About the book: An unforgettable novel about finding a lost piece of yourself in someone else. Khaled Hosseini, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, has written a new novel about how we love, how we take care of one another, and how the choices we make resonate through generations. In this tale revolving around not just parents and children but brothers and sisters, cousins and caretakers, Hosseini explores the many ways in which families nurture, wound, betray, honor, and sacrifice for one another; and how often we are surprised by the actions of those closest to us, at the times that matter most. Following its characters and the ramifications of their lives and choices and loves around the globe—from Kabul to Paris to San Francisco to the Greek island of Tinos—the story expands gradually outward, becoming more emotionally complex and powerful with each turning page.
