Richard Breitman and Allan J. Lichtman - FDR and the Jews
Politics and Prose, Friday, May 24 at 4pm
The debate continues: did FDR do everything possible to save European Jews during the Second World War? The authors, both American University history professors, examine the public debate as well as consult newly available primary sources, finding that the president was both compassionate and pragmatic, doing what he could on behalf of the Nazis’ victims.

Ken Kalfus - Equilateral
Politics and Prose, Friday, May 24 at 7pm
Combining sly invention with historical fact, Kalfus, a National Book Award finalist for A Disorder Peculiar to the Country, takes a deft look at human folly. The story centers on Thayer, a British astronomer who’s found evidence of life on Mars. He also announces that these Martians will contact Earth—if he can get a monumental triangle constructed in Egypt in time, which he will do unless his own personal romantic triangle proves too distracting.

Philosophy/Spiritual Book Discussion
One More Page Books, Tuesday, May 28 at 7pm
Tues, May 28 at 7 pm

Our Philosophy/Spiritual Book Group which meets at 7 pm the FOURTH Tuesday of every month.

Laurie will lead our Spiritual book group. At our next meeting on Tues, May 28 at 7 pm, we discuss Sabbath: Finding Rest, Renewal, and Delight in Our Busy Lives by Wayne Muller.

"In today's world, with its relentless emphasis on success and productivity, we have lost the necessary rhythm of life, the balance between work and rest. Constantly striving, we feel exhausted and deprived in the midst of great abundance. We long for time with friends and family, we long for a moment to ourselves. Millennia ago, the tradition of Sabbath created an oasis of sacred time within a life of unceasing labor. Now Wayne Muller shows us how to create a special time of rest, delight, and renewal--a refuge for our souls. Muller teaches us how we can use this time of sacred rest to refresh our bodies and minds, restore our creativity, and regain our birthright of inner happiness." (MDGentleReader)
