Elizabeth Evans & Kirstin Valdez Quade
Antigone Books, Friday, March 27 at 7pm
Event Date: Friday, March 27 at 7:00pm In Elizabeth Evans’ new novel, a small-town woman named Charlotte attends the Iowa Writers' Workshop. She is thrilled and confounded by a woman she meets there, charismatic and sophisticated Esme. One moment, Esme appears to be Charlotte's most intimate friend; the next, her rival. After a tumultuous weekend, Charlotte's insecurities and her resentment toward Esme reach a fever pitch. Blindly, Charlotte strikes out-in an act of betrayal that ultimately unleashes a cascade of calamities on her own head. Twenty years later, Charlotte is a successful novelist. A much-changed Esme appears, bringing the past that Charlotte grieved over, and believed buried, to the doorstep of Charlotte and her beloved husband. As Good as Dead performs an exquisitely tuned psychological high-wire act as it explores the dangers that lie in wait when trust is poisoned by secrets and fears. With intensity and emotional precision, Kirstin Valdez Quade's unforgettable stories plunge us into the fierce, troubled hearts of characters defined by the desire to escape the past or else to plumb its depths. The deadbeat father of a pregnant teenager tries to transform his life by playing the role of Jesus in a bloody penitential Passion. A young man discovers that his estranged father and a boa constrictor have been squatting in his grandmother's empty house. A lonely retiree new to Santa Fe becomes obsessed with her housekeeper. One girl attempts to uncover the mystery of her cousin's violent past, while another young woman finds herself at an impasse when she is asked to hear her priest's confession. Always hopeful, these stories chart the passions and obligations of family life, exploring themes of race, class, and coming-of-age, as Quade's characters protect, betray, wound, undermine, bolster, define, and, ultimately, save each other. Annabelle Gurwitch
Antigone Books, Friday, April 3 at 7pm
Event Date: Friday, April 3 at 7:00pm

Actor and humorist Annabelle Gurwitch has written a wickedly funny book of essays about the indignities faced by femmes d'un certain age. Whether she is falling in lust at the Genius Bar, coping with her best friend's assisted suicide, or navigating the extensive -- and treacherously expensive -- anti-aging offerings at the beauty counter, Gurwitch confronts middle age with candor, wit, and a healthy dose of self-deprecation. Scorchingly honest, surreally and riotously funny, I See You Made an Effort is ultimately not about aging out of anything--it's about aging into a bigger and better version of yourself than your younger self ever imagined.
