Starr Sanders
Antigone Books, Friday, October 24 at 7pm
Event Date: Friday, October 24 at 7:00pm

Join us for the book launch of Tucson author Starr Sanders' debut novel, The Boy Without a Face.

The town of Silver Falls is shaken when a high school student named Michael, is severely attacked by three other students. Michael survives the attack and the media firestorm in which he is dubbed "The Boy without a Face." After two years in the hospital having multiple operations to repair the damage, he emerges transformed, with a completely new face and a cunning plan for revenge. Years later he returns to the town and begins to set his revenge plan in motion. But over time, as his plan unfolds, he also begins to see the perpetrators as human beings, and their culpability is called into question. Will Michael lose everything, including the woman he loves, all in the name of vengeance? With page-turning intensity, Sanders reveals the psychic toll of a life fueled by revenge.

Celebration of Poetry
Antigone Books, Friday, October 31 at 7pm
Event Date: Friday, October 31 at 7:00pm

Join us for a Celebration of Poetry with 4 amazing poets.

Kate Gale, author of The Goldilocks Zone

"...These poems... prove repeatedly that Gale possesses a poetic tone and pace all her own. She is also refreshingly out of step with today's poetry of self-absorption, for she is fascinated less by her ego than by the strange variety of the world around us.” —Billy Collins, Former U.S. Poet Laureate

•Cynthia Hogue, author of Revenance

By turns elegiac, ecopoetic, and impolitic, Hogue's 8th collection is a condensery of empathic encounters with others and otherness.

•Liza Porter, author of Red Stain

“With unflinching honesty..., Liza Porter peels back the human skin to reveal its darkest, most raw underside. And yet, her work leaves us with hope, and most important, with love.” —Naomi Benaron, author of Running the Rift

Peggy Shumaker, author of Toucan Nest: Poems of Costa Rica

In the 8th book by Alaska State Writer Laureate Peggy Shumaker, her encounter with Costa Rica has produced a work of startlingly beautiful mindfulness and imagination.

Lydia Millet & Johanna Skibsrud
Antigone Books, Friday, November 7 at 7pm
Event Date: Friday, November 7 at 7:00pm

In Lydia Millet’s wonderfully comedic, poignant new novel, mermaids, kidnappers, and mercenaries hijack a tropical vacation in this genre-bending sendup of the American honeymoon. Pulitzer Prize finalist Millet delivers a thrilling piece of fabulist fiction, comically deflating clear-cut distinctions between truth, fiction, and moral high ground.

Johanna Skibsrud’s intricate, ambitious new novel brims with insight and emotion on the ill effects of war, the repercussions of betrayal, and the elliptical nature of time and memory. Skibsrud, winner of Canada’s Giller Prize, follows the lives of several people affected by the sudden disappearance of World War I veteran Arthur Sinclair during the 1930’s Bonus Army war. The novel examines an act of personal betrayal against a sweeping backdrop of historical conflict. “Brilliant. . . . Compelling portraits of human beings struggling to do the right thing under ambiguous moral circumstances… This wholly realized book has everything I crave in a work of fiction.” --Tim O Brien, author of The Things They Carried

Peg Bowden
Antigone Books, Friday, November 14 at 7pm
Event Date: Friday, November 14 at 7:00pm

Peg Bowden, retired public health nurse and current Samaritans’ volunteer at a migrant shelter on the Mexico border, has written a series of true stories and personal reflections exploring the complexities of human migration. She lives in the Arizona borderlands, a sort of third country with one foot in Mexico and the other in the United States. The shelter where she volunteers, “el comedor,” provides clothing, medical supplies and counsel to migrants seeking the American Dream. Investigating why thousands of people are willing to risk their lives crossing the desert, she reflects on the power of love and family that drives people into the treacherous landscapes of southern Arizona. Bowden is also a Board member of the newly formed Border Community Alliance, an organization that focuses on the cultural, economic and humanitarian issues of the Arizona borderlands.

Jamie Anderson
Antigone Books, Friday, November 21 at 7pm
Event Date: Friday, November 21 at 7:00pm

Musician Jamie Anderson has opened for Holly Near, closed down a church coffeehouse by saying "uterus," and danced with a tornado. From taking her shirt off for an Indigo Girl to housing with a pig, she’s willing to do what it takes for the perfect gig. With a delightful mix of horror road stories, fan girl name dropping, and commentary on the people and times, Anderson describes the joys and travails of the touring circuit as she creates the music and stories of our lives. She has worn out three pick-up trucks since 1987, seen forty-seven of fifty states, immigrated to Canada, and consumed countless cases of M&M’s while bringing her brand of wild and lovely folk music to venues around the world. She’s very likely to sing us a few songs among the stories, and if we’re lucky, she might even twirl us some fire. That’s the kind of gal she is.
