Todd Miller
Antigone Books, Friday, April 25 at 7pm
Event Date: Friday, April 25 at 7:00pm

Journalist Todd Miller tells an alarming story of the U.S. Border Patrol and Homeland Security's ever-widening reach into the lives of American citizens and legal immigrants as well as the undocumented. He describes the militarization of the Border Patrol and concurrent dehumanizing of "unauthorized" persons: American citizens routinely harassed and arrested in Constitution-free zones that extend 100 miles from all borders; the expulsion of an exemplary Border Patrol agent for expressing his Mexican identity in casual conversation; and the Border Patrol's Explorer Academy for children, which, with its lock-step marching, black boots, law-enforcement training, and indoctrination is eerily evocative of fascism and Hitler Youth. Miller reveals the "complex and industrial world" looming behind the border patrol, spanning "robotics, engineers, salespeople and detention centers." "It is the world in which we now live," he states, "where eradicating border violations is given higher priority than eradicating malnutrition, poverty, homelessness, illiteracy, unemployment."

Frances Washburn & D. R. Ransdell
Antigone Books, Friday, May 2 at 7pm
Join us for a mystery double header with Frances Washburn, author of The Red Bird All-Indian Travelling Band and D. R. Ransdell, author of The Mariachi Murder.

The Red Bird All-Indian Traveling Band begins on the Pine Ridge Reservation with a raucous Fourth of July gig that abruptly ends with the Red Birds ducking out of the performance in a hilarious hail of beer bottles. By the end of the evening, community member Buffalo Ames is dead, presumed to be murdered, just outside the bar. Sissy Roberts, the band's singer and the "best female guitar picker on the rez," is reluctantly drawn into the ensuing investigation by an FBI agent who discovers Sissy's knack for hearing other people's secrets. Part mystery, part community chronicle, this is the story of Indian Country on the verge of historic change, and a woman unwilling to let change pass her by. Frances Washburn is an assistant professor of American Indian studies and English at the University of Arizona.

In Mariachi Murder, Andy Veracruz is content with his life as the leader of a mariachi band, but when his lover is accused of murder, he has no choice but to defend her. In the process he faces the loss of his strongest loyalties as well as his entire career. “Ransdell burns up the nightclub scene with a slick and saucy story to keep your feet moving to the tunes and your mind guessing till the end” -- Stephen L. Brayton, author of Alpha. D. R. Ransdell directs second-language writing courses and coaches new graduate assistants at the University of Arizona. She also moonlights as a mariachi player.

Julio Cammarota & Augustine Romero
Antigone Books, Friday, May 9 at 7pm
Event Date: Friday, May 9 at 7:00pm The well-known and controversial Mexican American studies (MAS) program in the Tucson Unified School District set out to create an equitable and excellent educational experience for Latino students. Raza Studies offers the first comprehensive account of this progressive -- indeed revolutionary -- program by those who created and implemented it, and have struggled to protect it. Inspired by Paulo Freire's vision for critical pedagogy and Chicano activists of the 1960’s, the designers of the program believed the program would encourage academic achievement and engagement by Mexican American students. With chapters by leading scholars, this volume explains how the program used "critically compassionate intellectualism" to help students become "transformative intellectuals" who successfully worked to improve their level of academic achievement, as well as create social change in their schools and communities. Despite its popularity and success in inverting the achievement gap, in 2010, Arizona legislators banned MAS or any similar curriculum in public schools. Raza Studies is a passionate defense of the program in the face of heated local and national attention. It recounts how one program dared to venture into a world of possibility, hope, and struggle, and offers compelling evidence of success for social justice education programs.
