Ander Monson
Antigone Books, Friday, February 13 at 7pm
Event Date: Friday, February 13 at 7:00pm

Readers of books leave traces: marginalia, slips of paper, fingerprints, inscriptions. All books have histories, and libraries are not just collections of books and databases but a medium of long-distance communication with other writers and readers. Letter to a Future Lover collects several dozen brief pieces written in response to library ephemera--with "library" defined broadly, ranging from university institutions to friends' shelves, from a seed library to a KGB prison library--and addressed to readers past, present, and future. Through these witty, idiosyncratic essays, Ander Monson reflects on the human need to catalog, preserve, and annotate; the private and public pleasures of reading; the nature of libraries; and how the self can be formed through reading and writing. An exuberant, expansive cataloging of the intimate physical relationship between a reader and a book.

Chris Impey
Antigone Books, Friday, February 20 at 7pm
Event Date: Friday, February 20 at 7:00pm

In Humble before the Void, Chris Impey, a noted astronomer and author, gives us a thoroughly absorbing and engaging account of his journey to northern India to teach in the first-ever "Science for Monks" leadership program. The program was initiated by the Dalai Lama to introduce science into the Tibetan Buddhist monastic tradition. In a vivid and compelling narrative, Impey introduces us to a group of exiled Tibetan monks whose charm, tenacity and unbridled enthusiasm for learning is infectious. Impey marvels not only at their enthusiasm, but at their tireless attention to detail. He observes them as they meticulously count galaxies and notes how their enthusiasm and diligence stands in contrast to many American students who are frequently turned off by science's inability to deliver easy, immediate payoffs. Because the Buddhist monks have had a limited science education, Impey must devise creative pedagogy. His new students immediately take to his inspired teaching methods, whether it's the use of balloons to demonstrate the Hubble expansion or donning an Einstein mask to explain the theory of relativity.

"This book will provide readers with a greater awareness of the spirit of curiosity and inquiry that lies at the heart of the Buddhist tradition, as well as the fruitfulness of maintaining active communication between the Buddhist and scientific communities." --from the Foreword by His Holiness the Dalai Lama

Mystery Story Triple Header
Antigone Books, Friday, February 27 at 7pm
Event Date: Friday, February 27 at 7:00pm

Join us for an evening with local mystery writers Becky Masterman, author of Fear the Darkness; Barbara Sattler, author of Anne Levy’s Last Case; and Kenney Hegland, author of Law Prof.

In Becky Masterman’s new book, retired FBI agent Brigid Quinn, who was introduced to mystery readers in the Edgar Award-nominated Rage against the Dying is back. This is good news for those who were captivated by the tough-but-vulnerable 59-year-old protagonist. She is ready to build a new life in Tucson with a husband, friends, and some nice quiet work as a private investigator, with a little martial arts practice thrown in.

In Barbara Sattler’s book, fifty year-old public defender Anne, an outspoken workaholic, has a tough case that puts her career on the line. The book is based on a true case of a 16-year-old girl accused of the premeditated murder of a prominent businessman.

Kenney Hegland’s book is a crisp, intellectually enlightening legal novel. Dr. Robert Shannon leaves academia to embrace the intensity of litigation. The case: Marie, 13, her mother killed by a defective furnace. Placed in foster care, she is sexually assaulted. Can the furnace’s manufacturer be sued? Can the store that sold it? Can the agency that placed Marie in the foster home?

Margaret Regan
Antigone Books, Friday, March 6 at 7pm
Event Date: Friday, March 6 at 7:00pm

Tucson Weekly columnist Margaret Regan, who told harrowing tales of immigrants trying to cross from Mexico into Arizona in her previous book, The Death of Josseline, here turns to the treatment of undocumented immigrants who have made it across the border. The book is an intimate look at the people ensnared by the US detention and deportation system, the largest in the world. Using volatile Arizona as a case study, journalist Regan conjures up the harshness of the detention centers hidden away in the countryside and travels to Mexico to report on the fate of deportees stranded far from their families in the United States. Drawing on Regan's interviews with mothers and fathers locked up in detention or trapped on the other side of the border, the book is a humanizing and rare glimpse into the lives of those caught up in the US immigration enforcement cycle. Giving special attention to the separation of families and the treatment of women, Regan demonstrates that increasingly draconian detention and deportation policies have broadened police powers and enriched an industry whose profits are derived from human incarceration.
