Amy Brill's event on June 20 will be introduced by Tracy Winn, author of Mrs. Somebody Somebody, a collection of linked short stories set in Lowell, and perennial favorite on our Book Group Selections table display.

Amy Brill is a writer and producer. Her articles, essays, and short stories have appeared in numerous publications including Salon, Guernica, and Time Out New York, and have been anthologized in Before and After: Stories from New York and Lost and Found. A Pushcart Prize nominee, she has been awarded fellowships in fiction by the Edward Albee Foundation, Jentel, the Millay Colony, Fundacion Valparaiso, and the Constance Saltonstall Foundation. In 2005, she was the Robert and Charlotte Baron Visiting Artist Fellow at the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester, MA.

As a broadcast journalist, she received a George Foster Peabody Award for writing MTV’s The Social History of HIV, and she researched, wrote, or produced over a dozen other projects for the network’s pro-social initiatives. She has also produced online projects fostering public dialogue on arts, culture, and society for PBS, The New York Foundation for the Arts, and other organizations. A native New Yorker, Amy lives in Brooklyn with her husband. They have two small daughters, neither of whom can yet tie her own shoes.

With selected images, made in a variety of processes, this photographer tries to demonstrate and explain some of the many elements of photography, as well as some of the history of the art. The camera is ready, and so we are ready and anxious to possess what was seen. Since so many of us now “do photography” why not think more about how we go about it? For those making that click of the shutter, it may be helpful to understand how one practitioner goes about her work, using the eye, the mind, and the hard, and to read reflections of some great photographers. Sharing the images, as well as methods, insights and techniques is the purpose of this book, a sharing meant for anyone who takes pleasure in photography and has some curiosity about what else it might have to offer in trying to achieve the images we love to look at. Since her early teens Diane Asseo Griliches enjoyed her Brownie box camera, and the deckled-edge photos the drug store produced out of the roll of film it was give. The results were magic. Years later, allowing photography to take her away from directing community theater, she enjoyed the mysteries and magic of the dark room. Though initially reluctant, she has now entered the digital age of photography and prizes what it can produce. The gift of science to the arts just keeps giving.

She received a BA in Spanish literature and cognitive science from the University of Virginia, and a MA in Latin American Studies and a MPA in non-profit management from Indiana University. To research Golden Boy, Tara traveled to Tanzania, where she interviewed those working to rescue and educate Tanzanian people with albinism. She currently teachers high school Spanish and lives in Massachusetts. Golden Boy is her first novel.
