Bruce Jacobs is the author of Race Manners for the 21st Century: Navigating the Minefield Between Black and White Americans in an Age of Fear and a book of poetry Speaking Through My Skin. He has been on NPR, Pacifica, C-Span, and scores of radio and television talk shows.

We often hear about promising research into preventing or alleviating medical problems and wonder how many years before those studies will yield a safe, effective clinical treatment. Plans are underway by the University of Rochester Medical Center to build a clinical and translational sciences building ... (more)(CTSB.) The new 150,000 square-foot facility will enable URMC to consolidate heretofore scattered programs and resources under a single roof including scientific disciplines, education and training programs, critical support operations, and several large clinical research programs. Our speaker will report on the current status of the plans for the CTSB and discuss how the center will help speed the safe translation of research into medicines and clinical practices.

In 2006 a group that includes hospitals, health insurers, and businesses won a $4.4 million state grant to begin the Rochester Regional Health Information Organization (RHIO): a regional electronic data-sharing network. Proponents of RHIOs claim this secure information exchange can improve patient care ... (more)and facilitate better decision making. Under this system, health care providers can access health records for just about any patient. It has been suggested that ease of access could save lives particularly if a patient ends up in an emergency room, or is unconscious and cannot give information about their health history. Health care providers not familiar with a patient's history can have the information at hand and avoid ordering diagnostic tests, which may have already been done for that patient. Our speaker will provide an overview of the RHIO's history, its current focus, and its future goals.

Rochester leaders speak frequently of the need to guide youth with viable paths to success, yet the Rochester After School Alliance and recreation centers have taken hits in funding and are offering fewer hours of programming.
