Mette Ivie Harrison | The Bishop's Wife
The King's English Bookshop, Friday, January 2, 2015 at 7pm
Join local author, Mette Ivie Harrison, for a reading and signing of her new mystery novel, The Bishop's Wife.

Linda Wallheim is the mother of five grown boys and the wife of a Mormon bishop. As bishop, Kurt Wallheim is the ward’s designated spiritual father, and that makes Linda the ward’s unofficial mother, and her days are filled with comfort visits, community service, and informal counseling.

But Linda is increasingly troubled by the church’s patriarchal structure and secrecy, especially as a disturbing situation takes shape in the ward. One cold winter morning, a neighbor, Jared Helm, appears on the Wallheims’ doorstep with his 5-year-old daughter, claiming that his wife, Carrie, disappeared in the middle of the night, leaving behind everything she owns. The circumstances surrounding Carrie’s disappearance become more suspicious the more Linda learns about them, and she becomes convinced that Jared has murdered his wife and painted himself as an abandoned husband.

Kurt asks Linda not to get involved in the unfolding family saga, but she has become obsessed with Carrie’s fate, and with the well-being of her vulnerable young daughter. She cannot let the matter rest until she finds out the truth. Is she wrong to go against her husband, the bishop, when her inner convictions are so strong?

Tracy Manaster | You Could Be Home By Now
The King's English Bookshop, Thursday, January 8, 2015 at 7pm
Join author, Tracy Manaster, for a reading and signing of her novel, You Could Be Home By Now.

The Commons is a luxury retirement community in sunny, scenic Arizona whose regulations prohibit full-time residents under the age of fifty-five. It’s also (theoretically) an ideal place for young professionals Seth and Alison Collier to accept jobs as a means of dealing (badly) with a recent loss.

But life in The Commons isn’t all tee times and poolside lounging, and when a struggling resident, underwater on her mortgage and unable to relocate due to the nation’s ongoing housing crisis, is discovered to be raising her grandson in secret, the story—with the help of a teenage beauty blogger and a retiree with reasons of his own to seek the spotlight—goes viral. You Could Be Home By Now explores the fallout for all involved, taking on the themes of grief and memory, aspiration and social class, self-deception and the drive in all of us to find a place to belong.

Places in the signing line are reserved for those who purchase a copy of You Could Be Home By Now from The King's English.

Matt Higgins | Bird Dreams: Adventures at the Extremes of Human Flight
The King's English Bookshop, Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at 7pm
Join author, Matt Higgins, for a reading and signing of his new book, Bird Dreams: Adventures at the Extremes of Human Flight.

Human flight is one of the last great challenges on Earth. Not like how the Wright brothers flew, but how we fly in our dreams. This is the goal of the Wingsuit Landing Project: to soar through the sky at speeds up to 100 mph, and to land without the aid of a parachute. At least half a dozen groups around the globe have a similar goal in mind, from France, South Africa, New Zealand, Russia, and Britain to the United States. The possibilities of the wingsuit concept have captured the human imagination— from the mythical Icarus to beloved character Wile E. Coyote—but the results have usually been disastrous. New designs developed over the past two decades have made the wingsuit slightly safer and more predictable, but immense dangers still remain.

Gabrielle Zevin | The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry
The King's English Bookshop, Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at 7pm
Join New York Times bestselling author, Gabrielle Zevin, for a reading and signing of her novel The storied life of A.J. Fikry.

A. J. Fikry's life is not at all what he expected it to be. His wife has died; his bookstore is experiencing the worst sales in its history; and now his prized possession, a rare collection of Poe poems, has been stolen. Slowly but surely, he is isolating himself from all the people of Alice Island--from Chief Lambiase, the well-intentioned police officer who's always felt kindly toward him; from Ismay, his sister-in-law, who is hell-bent on saving A.J. from his dreary self; from Amelia, the lovely and idealistic (if eccentric) Knightley Press sales rep who persists in taking the ferry to Alice Island, refusing to be deterred by A.J.'s bad attitude. Even the books in his store have stopped holding pleasure for him. These days, he can only see them as a sign of a world that is changing too rapidly.

And then a mysterious package appears at the bookstore. It's a small package, though large in weight--an unexpected arrival that gives A.J. the opportunity to make his life over, the ability to see everything anew. It doesn't take long for the locals to notice the change overcoming A.J., for the determined sales rep Amelia to see her curmudgeonly client in a new light, for the wisdom of all those books to become again the lifeblood of A.J.'s world. Or for everything to twist again into a version of his life that he didn't see coming.

As surprising as it is moving, The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry is an unforgettable tale of transformation and second chances, an irresistible affirmation of why we read, and why we love.

Places in the signing line are reserved for those who purchase a copy of The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry from The King's English.
