David Ross Scheer | The Death of Drawing
The King's English Bookshop, Wednesday, March 4 at 7pm
Join author, David Ross Scheer, for a presentation and signing of his new book, The Death of Drawing.

As the medium by which architects thought and communicated, drawing has defined architecture for centuries. Now computer simulation suddenly threatens to replace it. This has already brought about profound changes in how architects think and how our built environment is created. This transformation goes far beyond architecture. Throughout our culture, simulation is becoming our chief mode of interacting with the world. Instead of offering an interpretation of our experience, simulation simply reproduces it by artificial means. We come to enjoy experience without depth or meaning. Simulation is not only created by computers- it exists anywhere we accept what we see and hear without asking about its causes. The Death of Drawing: Architecture in the Age of Simulation explores the roots of this transformation by examining the many ways drawing has shaped architectural thinking. It goes on to describe how computer simulation is changing architecture and building, and places this is a larger cultural context. Those interested in architecture will gain valuable insights into a radically reshaped field. Everyone will find the underlying trend in their own experience.

Philip Shepherd | New Self, New World
The King's English Bookshop, Friday, March 6 at 7pm
Join author, Philip Shepherd, for a reading and signing of his new book, New Self, New World.

New Self, New World challenges the primary story of what it means to be human, the random and materialistic lifestyle that author Philip Shepherd calls our “shattered reality.” This reality encourages us to live in our heads, self-absorbed in our own anxieties. Drawing on diverse sources and inspiration, New Self, New World reveals that our state of head-consciousness falsely teaches us to see the body as something we possess and to try to take care of it without ever really learning how to inhabit it. Shepherd articulates his vision of a world in which each of us enjoys a direct, unmediated experience of being alive. He petitions against the futile pursuit of the “known self” and instead reveals the simple grace of just being present. In compelling prose, Shepherd asks us to surrender to the reality of “what is” that enables us to reunite with our own being. Each chapter is accompanied by exercises meant to bring Shepherd’s vision into daily life, what the author calls a practice that “facilitates the voluntary sabotage of long-standing patterns.” New Self, New World is at once a philosophical primer, a spiritual handbook, and a roaming inquiry into human history.

His best friend, Genesis Beam (aka Gen), believes in science and logic, and she doesn't think for one second that there's such a thing as luck, good or bad. But only an extremely unlucky person could be struck by lightning on his birthday...and that person is Nate Harlow. By some miracle, though, Nate survives, and the strike seems to have changed his luck. Suddenly, Nate's grandpa is the busiest fisherman in their small, beachside town. And Nate finds himself the center of attention, the most popular kid at school, the one who hits a game-winning home run! This lucky streak can't last forever, though, and as a hurricane draws close to the shores of Paradise Beach, Nate and Gen may need more than just good luck to save their friendship and their town: They need a miracle.

Adam W. Dean | An Agrarian Republic
The King's English Bookshop, Thursday, March 19 at 6:30pm
Join assistant professor of history at Lynchburg College, Adam W. Dean, for a discussion and signing of his new book, An Agrarian Republic: Farming, Antislavery Politics, and Nature Parks in the Civil War Era.

The familiar story of the Civil War tells of an agrarian South pitted against a rapidly industrializing North. However, Adam W. Dean argues that the political ideology of the triumphant Republican Party was fundamentally agrarian. Believing small farms owned by families for generations led to a model society, Republicans saw slavery as a foil to the northern agricultural ideal. In their view, plantation agriculture destroyed the land's productivity, required constant western expansion, and produced an elite landed gentry hostile to the Union. Dean shows how, over time, these ideas shaped the debate over slavery's expansion, spurred the creation of the Department of Agriculture and the passage of the Homestead Act, and laid a foundation for the development of conservation ideas that supported the creation of the earliest national parks

Susan Adrian | Tunnel Vision
The King's English Bookshop, Friday, March 20 at 7pm
Join young adult authors, Susan Adrian, Courtney Alameda, J.R. Johansson, and Valynne Maetani for a discussion of their new young adult novels.

In Tunnel Vision, Jake Lukin has just turned 18. He's decent at tennis and Halo, and waiting to hear on his app to Stanford. But he's also being followed by a creep with a gun, and there's a DARPA agent waiting in his bedroom. His secret is blown.

When Jake holds a personal object, like a pet rock or a ring, he has the ability to "tunnel" into the owner. He can sense where they are, like a human GPS, and can see, hear, and feel what they do. It's an ability the government would do anything to possess: a perfect surveillance unit who could locate fugitives, spies, or terrorists with a single touch.

Jake promised his dad he’d never tell anyone about his ability. But his dad died two years ago, and Jake slipped. If he doesn't agree to help the government, his mother and sister may be in danger. Suddenly he's juggling high school, tennis tryouts, flirting with Rachel Watkins, and work as a government asset, complete with 24-hour bodyguards.

Forced to lie to his friends and family, and then to choose whether to give up everything for their safety, Jake hopes the good he's doing—finding kidnap victims and hostages, and tracking down terrorists—is worth it. But he starts to suspect the good guys may not be so good after all. With Rachel's help, Jake has to try to escape both good guys and bad guys and find a way to live his own life instead of tunneling through others.

Alan Cheuse | Prayers for the Living
The King's English Bookshop, Saturday, April 4 at 7pm
Meet author and NPR commentator Alan Cheuse, who will read from and discuss his novel, Prayers for the Living.

Prayers for the Living is a novel both grandiose in its vision and loving in its familiarity. Presented in a series of conversations between grandmother Minnie Bloch and her companions, Alan Cheuse, National Public Radio commentator on All Things Considered, unfolds a layered family portrait of three generations of the Bloch family, whose members are collapsing under everyday burdens and brutal betrayals. Her son Manny is a renowned, almost legendary rabbi. Respected by his congregants and surrounded by family, no one suspects that he yearns for a life of greater personal glory, but when an oracular bird delivers what Manny believes to be a message from his deceased father, he abandons his congregation in pursuit of a life in business and his entire life spirals out of control.

As Manny’s fortunes rise in the corporate realm, he falls deeper into an affair with a congregant, a Holocaust survivor, his wife sinks deeper into alcoholism and depression and his daughter, traumatized by a sexual scandal at college, makes Manny the target of a plot to shatter his newly-found empire. The devoted family matriarch, Minnie, observes and recounts the tragic downfall of her family, unable to save them from themselves.

Paul Ketzle | The Late Matthew Brown
The King's English Bookshop, Tuesday, April 7 at 7pm
Join local author, Paul Ketzle, for a reading and signing of his new book, The Late Matthew Brown.

Matthew Brown is a rising star in the "New South" political machine. He's also, he knows, a complete fraud. Riding a wave of accomplishments by colleagues and subordinates through various government agencies, Matthew has ascended to associate director of the Department of Corrections, and his potential has caught the eye of the party power brokers, who are priming him for even grander political office. But suddenly tasked with organizing the state's first execution in a decade, Matthew's carefully constructed charade begins to crumble. At the same time, a sprawling investigation that is roiling all of government, led by a mysterious special prosecutor, threatens to sweep Matthew up in its wake when he discovers a potentially deadly ecological scandal that he himself may have unwittingly set in motion. In the midst of this storm arrives Hero, the 12-year-old daughter Matthew never knew existed. Possessing a bruising wit and new emotional wounds, she relentlessly batters Matthew, who comes to believe that this relationship with his newfound daughter may be his only chance for personal redemption. The Late Matthew Brown is a satire of race and bureaucracy and the struggle to build meaningful relationships while living within two worlds at once, the Old South and the New.

Paul Ketzle received his doctorate in literature and creative writing from the University of Utah and a master's in creative writing from Florida State University. Formerly an editor of Quarterly West and at Western Humanities Review, he currently teaches and resides in Salt Lake City with his wife, Marcia, and two incredible (and wonderfully challenging) daughters.

Liesl Shurtliff | Jack: The True Story of Jack and the Beanstalk
The King's English Bookshop, Saturday, April 25 at 2pm
Join children's book author, Liesl Shurtliff, for a reading and signing of her new middle grade novel, Jack: The True Story of Jack and the Beanstalk.

All work and no play makes Jack extremely bored. And when Jack gets bored, he makes mischief. It’s not that he’s bad; he just longs for adventure—and there’s nothing adventurous about toiling day and night to grow yucky green stuff. Adventure finally arrives one day in the form of giants, and soon Jack is chasing them to a land beyond the clouds, with his little sister, Annabella, in tow. The kingdom of giants is full of slugs the size of sheep, venomous pixies as tall as grown men, and a chatty cook with the biggest mouth Jack has ever seen. There’s giant fun to be had, too: puddings to swim in, spoons to use as catapults, monster toads to carry off pesky little sisters…. But Jack and Annabella are on a mission. The king of the giants has taken something that belongs to them, and they’ll do anything—even dive into a smelly tureen of green bean soup—to get it back.

Places in the signing line are reserved for those who purchase a copy of Jack from The King's English.
