When CIA is chosen, her father finally tells her about his own nightmarish half-memories of The Testing. Tess Gerritsen
The King's English Bookshop, Wednesday, February 4 at 7pm
Tess Gerritsen (creator of Rizzoli & Isles) will join us for an evening at the Library's Viridian Event Center!

Tess will read from and sign her new mystery novel, Die Again.

The latest enthralling case in Tess Gerritsen's New York Times bestselling Rizzoli & Isles series, the blockbuster books behind the smash hit TNT series.

Boston Detective Jane Rizzoli is on the case of a big game hunter found dead in his apartment, alone with the body of a beautiful white snow leopard he had recently been commissioned to procure and stuff for a high-profile museum in the area. Medical examiner Maura Isles connects the case to a number of seemingly unrelated deaths where the victims have all been found hanging upside down, the hallmark of a leopard's kill. Rizzoli follows the puzzling trail of clues all the way to Botswana, where she uncovers the unsolved mystery of a deadly camping safari four years prior. When she realizes the two cases are connected, Rizzoli must track down the sole survivor of the tragic trip to discover who - or what - is behind these gruesome deaths.

Gabrielle Zevin | The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry
The King's English Bookshop, Tuesday, February 24 at 7pm
Join New York Times bestselling author, Gabrielle Zevin, for a reading and signing of her novel The storied life of A.J. Fikry.

A. J. Fikry's life is not at all what he expected it to be. His wife has died; his bookstore is experiencing the worst sales in its history; and now his prized possession, a rare collection of Poe poems, has been stolen. Slowly but surely, he is isolating himself from all the people of Alice Island--from Chief Lambiase, the well-intentioned police officer who's always felt kindly toward him; from Ismay, his sister-in-law, who is hell-bent on saving A.J. from his dreary self; from Amelia, the lovely and idealistic (if eccentric) Knightley Press sales rep who persists in taking the ferry to Alice Island, refusing to be deterred by A.J.'s bad attitude. Even the books in his store have stopped holding pleasure for him. These days, he can only see them as a sign of a world that is changing too rapidly.

And then a mysterious package appears at the bookstore. It's a small package, though large in weight--an unexpected arrival that gives A.J. the opportunity to make his life over, the ability to see everything anew. It doesn't take long for the locals to notice the change overcoming A.J., for the determined sales rep Amelia to see her curmudgeonly client in a new light, for the wisdom of all those books to become again the lifeblood of A.J.'s world. Or for everything to twist again into a version of his life that he didn't see coming.

As surprising as it is moving, The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry is an unforgettable tale of transformation and second chances, an irresistible affirmation of why we read, and why we love.

David Ross Scheer | The Death of Drawing
The King's English Bookshop, Wednesday, March 4 at 7pm
Join author, David Ross Scheer, for a presentation and signing of his new book, The Death of Drawing.

As the medium by which architects thought and communicated, drawing has defined architecture for centuries. Now computer simulation suddenly threatens to replace it. This has already brought about profound changes in how architects think and how our built environment is created. This transformation goes far beyond architecture. Throughout our culture, simulation is becoming our chief mode of interacting with the world. Instead of offering an interpretation of our experience, simulation simply reproduces it by artificial means. We come to enjoy experience without depth or meaning. Simulation is not only created by computers- it exists anywhere we accept what we see and hear without asking about its causes. The Death of Drawing: Architecture in the Age of Simulation explores the roots of this transformation by examining the many ways drawing has shaped architectural thinking. It goes on to describe how computer simulation is changing architecture and building, and places this is a larger cultural context. Those interested in architecture will gain valuable insights into a radically reshaped field. Everyone will find the underlying trend in their own experience.

His best friend, Genesis Beam (aka Gen), believes in science and logic, and she doesn't think for one second that there's such a thing as luck, good or bad. By some miracle, though, Nate survives, and the strike seems to have changed his luck. Suddenly, Nate's grandpa is the busiest fisherman in their small, beachside town. And Nate finds himself the center of attention, the most popular kid at school, the one who hits a game-winning home run! Join children's book author, Liesl Shurtliff, for a reading and signing of her new middle grade novel, Jack: The True Story of Jack and the Beanstalk.

All work and no play makes Jack extremely bored. And when Jack gets bored, he makes mischief. It’s not that he’s bad; he just longs for adventure—and there’s nothing adventurous about toiling day and night to grow yucky green stuff. Adventure finally arrives one day in the form of giants, and soon Jack is chasing them to a land beyond the clouds, with his little sister, Annabella, in tow. The kingdom of giants is full of slugs the size of sheep, venomous pixies as tall as grown men, and a chatty cook with the biggest mouth Jack has ever seen. There’s giant fun to be had, too: puddings to swim in, spoons to use as catapults, monster toads to carry off pesky little sisters…. But Jack and Annabella are on a mission. The king of the giants has taken something that belongs to them, and they’ll do anything—even dive into a smelly tureen of green bean soup—to get it back.
