Series: The torch
Edited a description (English)
"The torch" is a collection of samples of the work of students of the Birmingham School of Printing. Issues appeared in 1933, 1938 and 1950, although none were as spectacular as the first. Included are sample pages, many illustrated, of the books published at the Birmingham School of Printing (a catalogue of those published 1925-1933 is in no. 1) together with the complete text of two of them: "Baskerville letters" and "Baskerville bibliography". There are also sample pages of advertisements and commercial stationery designed by students.

"Every year First Year students in the School of Printing have taken part in a project to produce a book. The project covers all aspects of the First Year Full-time Course and is designed to involve the students in each stage of the production of the book. The text is researched and written by the students themselves in the form of group and individual assignments. The individual pieces of work are collated and edited by a member of staff before the assembled text is typed ready to be set. The setting is performed by the students in the Letter Assembly section. The text and illustrations are printed by the students in the Letterpress and Lithographic department. The book is then bound and finished by students in the Bookbinding area. Each year the book's subject is different, this year's topic is 'A Triangle', a study of a particular area of Leicester." Introduction to "A Triangle : The Newarke, The South Fields, The New Walk" (1983).

Tintern Press seems to have been a short-lived operation, based at Brockweir, Gloucestershire, opposite Tintern, active in printing limited editions, 1934-1936. The books seem to have been hand-set and printed by Vincent Stuart and bound by H. T. Wood. The otherwise unknown Sylvia Marshall illustrated two titles.

Series: The Colophon
Added a description (English)
"The Colophon, subtitled A Book Collectors' Quarterly or A quarterly for booklovers, was a limited edition quarterly periodical begun late in 1929 and continuing in various guises until 1950. It was the brainchild of Elmer Adler (1884-1962), founder of Pynson Printers of New York City. His idea was that various printers around the world would be willing to contribute their time and expertise to produce signatures (articles) using their own choice of papers, typography and illustration. These articles would then be bound together in boards by Pynson Printers and marketed to 2,000 subscribers. [...] "Beginning in early 1930, this 'adventure in enthusiasm', as Adler called it, was greeted with public enthusiasm as well and subscribers clamoured for it. However, it soon ran into difficulty as the Depression made the then costly subscription price of $15 per year difficult for many. By 1935, only 1,700 subscribers could be found. Nonetheless, the quality of The Colophon remained unsurpassed -- through the good will of printers, authors and artists -- as well as with the help of a number of anonymous financial gifts. From 1935 to 1938, The Colophon entered a new phase with less lofty production values (at a price of $4 per year), before returning to a higher level of quality in 1939 with the 'New Graphic Series'. Starting again in 1948, the name The New Colophon: A Book Collectors' Quarterly was used by Philip Duschnes and the quarterly was entirely printed by the Anthoensen Press of Portland, Maine, continuing publication until 1950 in a fourth and final format." "The Fundamentals of Biomedical Science series is written to reflect the challenges of practicing biomedical science today. It draws together essential basic science with insights into laboratory practice to show how an understanding of the biology of disease is coupled to the analytical approaches that lead to diagnosis."Assuming only a minimum of prior knowledge, the series reviews the full range of disciplines to which a Biomedical Scientist may be exposed - from microbiology to cytopathology to transfusion science. Alongside volumes exploring specific biomedical themes and related laboratory diagnosis, an overarching Biomedical Science Practice volume gives a grounding in the professional and experimental skills with which any Biomedical Scientist must be equipped." The Osborne Collection is Toronto Public Library's research collection of pre-1910 children's books. The collection was formed around the 1949 donation by Edgar Osborne (1890-1978), county librarian of Derbyshire, England, of his personal collection of some 2,000 rare and notable children's books as a research collection in historical children's literature.Volume I was published in Dec. 1958, reprinted with minor corrections in 1966, with a third printing with additional corrections coinciding with the publication of Volume II in 1975.The preface to Volume II includes "The large Pettingell Collection of boys' periodicals and penny dreadfuls will be described in the projected third volume of the Osborne Collection" (p. vi). Also "The Appendixes listing the illustrators, engravers, publishers, printers, and booksellers represented in Volumes I and II will be included in Volume III" (p. 1071). Presumably this has been overtaken by technology, as it doesn't appear to have been published.

"The mariner's catalog" has been described as the nautical equivalent of the Whole Earth Catalog. Pre-internet and world wide web, the catalog was devoted to all things nautical, with reviews and photos of tools and other nautical gear, short articles by contributors, musings and commentary by the editors (Peter Spectre, George Putz and Dave Getchell), and lots of the kinds of old engravings that used to adorn books and magazines before the invention of photogravure. The net effect is altogether charming and engrossing. This kind of publication no longer makes sense in the age of the internet.Adapted from a Skinboat Journal blog article.

'Everyman's Library' is a publisher's series, not a series. That is, for most of the books, Everyman does not have a monopoly on the work, and other editions were produced by other publishers. For further explanation, see the LT wiki, here.Titles should not be added here, but added to the appropriate publisher's series:The original Everyman's Library. The Everyman's Library New Series.

Series: OS One-Inch
Added a description (English)
This LT Series includes the New Popular Edition, based on the revision in the early 1930s, and the seventh series of sheets, derived from the 1950s revision. These sheets are drawn to a scale of 1 inch to 1 mile (1:63,360) and cover the whole of Great Britain. The sheet lines are the same for the two editions although originally the Scottish Popular Edition had its own sheet lines. In 1974 the One-Inch Map series was replaced by the metric 1:50,000 Landranger series. At the same time, popular areas of 1:25,000 scale mapping were used to create Outdoor Leisure Maps, with the remainder of this national series called Pathfinder.

Series: The Listener
Added a description (English)
The Listener was a weekly magazine published by the BBC between January 1929 and January 1991. The Newspaper Proprietors' Association considered its launch to be "an illegitimate stretching of official activity" and a number of compromises were agreed to, including an upper limit of 10% original contributed material not related to broadcasting, and a limit to the amount of advertising carried. The Listener came to be seen as one of a trio of establishment weekly magazines, the other two being The Spectator and the New Statesman, though it was distinguished from these by not being associated with a political party. Above all, The Listener represented the BBC's cultural mission (strongly emphasised by John Reith). It gradually declined after 1960 as British society changed, the BBC became more plural, and other sources of information became more readily available.Wikipedia article.

The life of Saint Nectan (1940; reprinted 1964, when it was called no. 48). The Welsh language Wicipedia includes a warning when using Noble's work, that he did not believe that women could lead communities or travel regularly, and that the monks who wrote about them were mistaken. This he tried to rectify by turning some female saints into men, and splitting or merging saints that worked close to each other. For example, he suggested that Non was two saints, one the mother of St David and the other a man who travelled and established communities.

The National Publishing Company attempted, shortly after the cessation of hostilities, to compile brief biographies of as many British participants in the war as possible. The vast majority of entries refer to combatants who survived the war or Special War Workers such as munitions workers, and is often the only source of information available. Fourteen volumes were completed on a regional basis.According to the Imperial War Museum library catalogue, "The first fourteen volumes were produced and deposited at the British Library between 1920 and 1922. Volume XIV was received with a note explaining that the publisher had gone into liquidation. The index was published by The Naval and Military Press in 2002."

"The Whole Earth Catalog (WEC) was an American counterculture magazine and product catalog published by Stewart Brand several times a year between 1968 and 1972, and occasionally thereafter, until 1998. The magazine featured essays and articles, but was primarily focused on product reviews. The editorial focus was on self-sufficiency, ecology, alternative education, "do it yourself" (DIY), and holism, and featured the slogan "access to tools". While WEC listed and reviewed a wide range of products (clothing, books, tools, machines, seeds, etc.), it did not sell any of the products directly. Instead, the vendor's contact information was listed alongside the item and its review. This is why, while not a regularly published periodical, numerous editions and updates were required to keep price and availability information up to date."(Wikipedia).

Sir Frank Merry Stenton (1880-1967) was Professor of Medieval History from 1912 to 1946 and Vice Chancellor from 1946 to 1950. His major works were The first century of English feudalism, 1066-1166 (1932) and Anglo-Saxon England (1943). He also contributed to the Victoria County Histories and studied English place names and coins. As Vice Chancellor, he presided over the University's purchase of Whiteknights Park, creating the new campus that allowed for the expansion of the university in later decades. Lady Doris Stenton (1894-1971) was Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Reader in History at the University of Reading from 1920 to 1959. Her major works were English society in the early middle ages (1066-1307) (1951) and The English woman in history (1957). She made important contributions to the study of medieval charters and was instrumental in reviving the Pipe Roll Society. Both Stentons were medievalists and together they were responsible for building the reputation of the University of Reading as a centre for historical excellence. They were responsible for the Stenton Library, their combined academic working libraries, which is as important a resource today as it was in the Stentons' lifetime."(Stenton lecture home page, Reading University).List of lectures.

The Swallows and Amazons series is a series of twelve children's books by English author Arthur Ransome, named after the title of the first book in the series. The twelve books involve adventures by groups of children almost all during the school holidays and mostly in England and Scotland, between 1929 and 1934. The stories revolve around outdoor activities, especially sailing.Literary scholar Peter Hunt said he believes the series "... changed British literature, affected a whole generation's view of holidays, helped to create the national image of the English Lake District and added Arthur Ransome's name to the select list of classic British children's authors".The series remains popular today. It contributes to the tourist industry in the Lake District and Norfolk Broads areas of England, where many of the books are set.The series begins with Swallows and Amazons (1930). It tells the story of the Walker children, who sail a dinghy named Swallow, and the Blackett children, who sail a dinghy named Amazon. The Walkers are staying at a farm near a lake during the school holidays; the Blacketts live in a house on the opposite shore. The Walkers consider themselves explorers, while the Blacketts declare themselves to be pirates. The children meet on an island in the lake, and have a series of adventures that weave imaginative tales of pirates and exploration into everyday life in inter-war rural England. In subsequent adventures in the series, the children change roles and become explorers or miners. In the novel Winter Holiday, the children meet Dick and Dorothea Callum, siblings visiting the area. Dick and Dorothea are often referred to as "The Ds" and appear in subsequent novels. Dick considers himself a scientist, while Dorothea sees herself as a writer. Two of the books feature the Callums without the Swallows or Amazons: Coot Club and The Big Six. They are set in an accurate representation of the Norfolk Broads, particularly the small village of Horning and its surrounding rivers and broads. Two other books, We didn't mean to go to sea and Secret Water, are set in Suffolk and Essex around the river Orwell, though one involves a trip across the North Sea to Holland. Two books, Peter Duck and Missee Lee, and possibly also Great Northern?, are metafictional, being fictional stories of the protagonists' voyages to exotic lands, as imagined by the fictional protagonists.Wikipedia.A few foreign language translations, including Danish and Hebrew, split some of the original books into two books.

Series: Rolls Series
Added a description (English)
The Chronicles and Memorials of Great Britain and Ireland during the Middle Ages (Latin: Rerum Britannicarum medii aevi scriptores), widely known as the Rolls Series, is a major collection of British and Irish historical materials and primary sources published as 99 works in 253 volumes between 1858 and 1911. Almost all the great mediaeval English chronicles were included: most existing editions, published by scholars of the 17th and 18th centuries, were considered to be unsatisfactory. The scope was also extended to include legendary, folklore and hagiographical materials, and archival records and legal tracts. The series was government-funded, and takes its unofficial name from the fact that its volumes were published "by the authority of Her Majesty's Treasury, under the direction of the Master of the Rolls", who was the official custodian of the records of the Court of Chancery and other courts, and nominal head of the Public Record Office. The works published within the series were not sequentially numbered (although the individual parts of multi-volume works were numbered).(Wikipedia).

"Those who are familiar with the existing publications in the field of Welsh history may possibly be surprised that it has been thought necessary to establish a new historical journal devoted to the subject. Already, most Welsh counties have their historical transactions. The Church in Wales and each of the Nonconformist denominations have its own appropriate periodical. Archaeologia Cambrensis of the Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion, the Journal of the National Library of Wales, and the Bulletin of the Board of Celtic Studies, not to mention distinguised English periodicals like the English Historical Review, History, or the Economic History Review, have all published important articles on various aspects of Welsh history, and Welsh historians have cause to be grateful for the hospitality of their pages. And yet it remains true to say that there is no journal whose primary function it is to publish articles of a general nature on the history of Wales. Nor is there one in which all books and periodicals of interest to students of Welsh history can be brought together for systematic review. It is these needs which it is hoped that the WELSH HISTORY REVIEW will specifically meet."Editorial, vol. 1, no. 1 (1960), p. i.Volumes 1-20 (1960-2001) of Welsh history review are available online on the National Library of Wales's Welsh Journals Online project.

"The second major research project of the Centre, the Social History of the Welsh Language from the first Act of Union in 1536 to the present, was completed in 2001."Its aim was to explain how and why Welsh was replaced to a considerable degree in the modern period by the English language. Close attention was paid to the status and role of Welsh in relation to English, and the research focused in particular on the size and distribution of the population and attitudes towards the Welsh language in the home and workplace, in the fields of education and law, in the activities of the press and in religious, cultural, administrative and political circles."The research fellows, assisted by demographers, anthropologists, geographers, historians and linguists from within the constituent institutions of the University of Wales and elsewhere, discovered a wealth of hitherto unused sources which provided new insights into the development of the Welsh language in its social context. The research was supervised by the former Director, Professor Geraint H. Jenkins, and by an Advisory Panel which contained leading scholars in the field."The project attracted considerable international interest and the eleven published volumes have been a major contribution to the social history of the language."Centre for Advanced Welsh & Celtic Studies websiteThe volumes were published simultaneously in English and in Welsh, in the series Hanes cymdeithasol yr iaith Gymraeg.

"The series 'Cam at y cewri' (A step towards the Classics) has been a bridge between learners and Welsh-language literature for about fifteen years. In this excellent series we are presented with abridged versions of many Welsh-language classics, such as the novels William Jones and Rhys Lewis, and the series also offers extra guidance in the form of notes and a vocabulary at the bottom of each page. It is a series which is especially popular amongst experienced learners and it’s wonderful to see a volume of Welsh-language poems now being published."Gwales.

"David [Garnett]'s last task before the storm blew up had been to edit Keeping Pigs by Connery Chappell, who was sufficiently impressed by David's knowledge of pigs to overcome any doubts about his editorial judgement. The years just after the war were a great time for small-holding - David kept pigs, Jersey cows, geese, hens and bees - and this was to be the first of a series of small manuals, the Countryman Library, which by 1957 ran to fifteen volumes under the general editorship of Wilfred Marlowe. It was, I think, generally handled by Harry Townshend or Ruth Simon. They were modest little books, crown 8vo, with a few functional half-tones, usually between 96 and 128 pages and sold at 7s 6d. to start with, rising to 11s. 6d. for the last two volumes. I doubt if any of them sold more than 2000."Richard Garnett, Rupert Hart-Davis Limited : a brief history with a checklist of publications, 2004, p. 21.

The Portsmouth Record Series began publication in 1971. Primarily it is intended to make the written sources for Portsmouth's history widely available. ... It is proposed to print complete texts of only three types of records: first, a very few documents that are of basic importance to the history of the City; second, any records of Portsmouth that are sufficiently unusual to give their publication more than purely local interest; and, third, records of types found elsewhere but hitherto unpublished. For the rest the Series will consist of calendars, catalogues, indexes and bibliographies. (vol. iii, p. 149).

Ordnance Survey's 1:50,000 scale leisure maps of Great Britain. Sheets 102-204 of the First Series were published in 1974, with sheets 1-101 following in 1976. The First Series maps were compiled from photographically enlarged Seventh Series one inch:one mile material, resulting in imperial contours labelled with metric heights, 305, 381, 457 etc. By June 1979 seventy six maps had been redrawn and were published in the Second Series. At the time the intention was to convert all the sheets to Second Series specification, including proper metric contours, by 1990.

The VCH was established as a private enterprise in 1899, with the first volumes appearing between 1900 and 1908, when the funding ran out. Publications for ten counties resumed in 1910 with local funding, before the First World War brought all work to a halt. Much material prepared before 1908 has never been published. A few volumes were published between 1923 and 1932, when the series was offered to the University of London's Institute of Historical Research. Since then, the emphasis has been on topographical volumes containing extended parish histories, with fewer general volumes. The 1974 local government reorganisation, and the disappearance of several counties as administrative bodies, weakened VCH funding. Much published and unpublished material is available online via the VCH website.
