About meShe is too fond of books, and it has turned her brain.
~ Louisa May Alcott ~

The pleasure of reading is doubled when one lives
with another who shares the same books.
~ Katherine Mansfield ~

Magazines all too frequently lead to books and should be regarded
by the prudent as the heavy petting of literature.
~ Fran Lebowitz ~

I am an artist, singer-songwriter (in partnership with my husband Jerry with whom I share this library), and poet. I work as an administrative assistant for a small landscape architecture firm in Nashville. I have 3 individually charming sons, 2 crazy beautiful cats and 1 crazy beautiful daughter-in-law.

My hobbies (beyond the obvious reading) include walking, sewing, cooking, collecting and cutting out words for my magnetic poetry wall, doll making, cross-stitching, going to antique stores, flea markets, garage sales and thrift stores (where I find the majority of the books I own). I have a weakness for magazines that borders on obsession.

My husband Jerry is a guitar teacher and singer/songwriter (check out his website at www.jerryoliver.com). He writes poetry and also is currently working on a novel, a collection of essays and an experimental stream-of-consciousness writing project. His addiction to magazines and books matches my own and as a result, our home is sorely lacking for shelving space. (One of my favorite thrift store finds recently was a large wooden magazine rack that he immediately claimed for his office/recording studio and filled with guitar magazines).

The main downtown branch of the Nashville public library is a favorite spot. All interested out-of-town visitors get an enthusiastic tour. It is truly beautiful with a large marble staircase and an inner open-air courtyard with a gorgeous fountain.

About my libraryMy library reflects my eclectic tastes in reading from classics to fantasy. "Chic lit" to Beat poetry. Popular culture to historic fiction. Hobbies and interests both old and new.

I want to thank you for remembering my birthday! How sweet is that! I had a pretty special day (working), haha, but no, afterwards, I came home to two cakes- one made and one Publix bakery cake in the shape of a flower. Also got some hershey kisses, a hackey sack, got taken out to dinner twice, and got $10.00- which I bought cigs with. How're you doing by the way? My life's a stress-mess, but I'm getting through each day like peach pie ;) Love to you!

-Abby
Noticed you liked She's Come Undone, and I was wondering if you'd be interested in reviewing my new novel and posting your comments here as well as a few other book-related sites. Thought you might like my book since it's also about a disturbed young girl's downward spiral and a bit dark. I could e-mail you the novel in an e-book format if you'd like (I'm out of physical copies at the moment). Let me know if you're interested. Here's a link to a summary in case you're interested:

Thanks,

Thanks for adding me to Interesting Libraries. Next time I'm in Nashville I'll have to check out the Library.
yeah, if you noticed in my library, there's a comment on "the bus driver who wanted to be god", saying that i read some of the stories, but didn't quite finish reading the entire book- got overdue and had to bring it back to the library... i'm probably just gonna buy it one day anyhow. i usually do well with buying books, cuz then i've got all the time in the world to read at my time and leisure...

hey,

noticed you rated the book "lovely bones" quite high on the star chart, and was wondering, if you could be able to tell from my selection of books whether or not i would find this book equally interesting to read. i have a book by the same author in my library as one i want to read, but don't own, it just interested me- the story-line, so allow me to know whether or not this would be a book to delve into as well. i read the summary on amazon, but didn't look through it. i'll wait to see what you'd recommend :D

-Abby
I haven't been to that place in Minneapolis, but now I'm going to have to go! Thanks for the recommendation. If you haven't read "The Shadow of the Wind" (I didn't see it in your library) you definitely should! Someone recommended it to me last year and I couldn't put it down.
one of the books you've just added, it's weird, it's been awhile but i've read that book! "animal crackers"! pretty crazy stories there.

-Abby
the book: the bus driver who wanted to be god, and other stories- i just recently got that out of the library, and they had to put it on hold for me cuz they were getting it from another library! one of the stories in it: kneller's happy campers was made into the movie: wristcutters: a love story. i saw the movie, and then saw that it was based on the story written by: etgar keret. so i knew i had to read it ;) well, cuz i liked the movie and all :D

-love,
Abby
Hey!
The bench in my picture is in the British Library in London. I love that bench. It's such a great idea, because one of my favorite places to be is in the middle of a great book.
I too tend to buy much faster than I can read and I keep that habit up in the same way you do...garage sales, thift stores and used book stores. Since we have similar taste in books, please send any suggestions my way. I am always looking for new authors and books to enjoy!
Melissa
just received "amnesia moon" in the mail today, and i'm psyched to start reading it. thanks again SO SO MUCH for thinking to send your extra copy my way. :)

-Abby
Friggin AWESOME!!! I can't wait to receive it, and seriously, thanks for thinking of me to send it to :D I'm now on the second part of the book "holy skirts". this far into it, I think I'd give it 4 stars. or possibly 3 1/2. Not quite sure yet, but I am enjoying it, so that's gotta be something right there! ;)

-Much Love,
Abby
4th went okay. joel had a hard time going to sleep, he couldn't understand all the bangs and cracks, and i don't blame him. but, i got to have a couple BL limes- okay, and light up a couple fireworks myself...

:D

-Abby
got "holy skirts" out of the library today, and already i'm flying through it.

-Abby
i added "holy skirts" to my library, because i can already tell i want to buy it, but at the moment, of course, i'm out of cash, so will have to do with the amazing public library around here ;) HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!!!!! like i told caleb, I HOPE IT'S A BLAST- LITERALLY!!!!

-Abby
actually, i'm thinking of visiting nashville in the forseeable (sp?) furture. i'd like to visit with you and caleb, and of course see jerry. i find you quite a fascinating sort as well, simply with your voice- pushing daisies- i love it, and now your library intrests, quite interest me as well. moreso, i can imagine you've got an incredible personality. hopefully i'll be one you'll be able to take to the public library one day when i visit :)

-Abby
WOW. i looked up the book, read a couple excerpts and now i definitely want more of it: Holy Skirts: A Novel of a Flamboyant Woman Who Risked All for Art (P.S.) by Rene Steinke. i knew i found her to be interesting from that picture, now i'll be hooked till i read the book, and then- who knows what feeling will amount after that!
was looking through your library, and this book Amnesia moon
by Jonathan Lethem caught my attention, so i looked it up on amazon.com and looked through it a bit, read it a bit, and am probably going to check that out of the library. never heard of this book before, and the way it's written- like right off, is so weird and almost futuristic/grungy/hopeless vibe. definitely got me interested for more.
who is the picture of you have up on your profile. there's something i admire about her. her stance, what she's wearing, the attitude she's giving off. she looks adventurous.
