About meI am studying education and history at university and I have been an amateur historian for more than 20 years. I love history and sociology. I now live in the desert southwest, but I have lived in 11 countries and 6 states. I love to travel and meet people and I'm always excited when I experience new cultures.

About my libraryMy library in very history and classics based but I have an eclectic mix of many different genres. I love non-fiction but I do have a small amount of non-classic fiction. I am always interested in expanding my collection in new and unexpected ways.

I have uploaded a cover for The Sword of the Republic: The United States Army on the Frontier, 1783–1846 by Francis Paul Prucha. This is from the 1969 Macmillan hardcover edition.
The great teachings unanimously emphasize that all the peace, wisdom, and joy in the universe are already within us; we don't have to gain, develop, or attain them. We're like a child standing in a beautiful park with his eyes shut tight. We don't need to imagine trees, flowers, deer, birds, and sky; we merely need to open our eyes and realize what is already here, who we really are.

Hi Russel,

Thank you for the reply. You asked about my art. Well, for some years now I've worked and made my living as a 3D/2D computer graphic artist. However, I hold a degree in advertising & design, plus a minor in photography. I worked in advertising for a number a years before I got into computer graphic arts though. To further complicate things, my first love and probably still is, is portraiture painting in oils. Unfortunately, I have little time to indulge in that anymore...grrr

Hi Russell.... I see you've added my library to your most interesting - thank you. I thought I'd take a look at your shelf as well. I notice we share a similar interest in reading material. You have some fascinating books that I would love to keep an eye on for the future. Therefore, I'm pleased to add your library to my most interesting too. As usual, I'm always looking for new books and new topics to explore...Aren't we all? =)

Anyway, thank you for the add...
Take care, Cindy
Honestly, I can't think of a good general history of Medieval Spain. O'Callaghan's book, titled (oddly enough) A History of Medieval Spain might be worth looking into, but I've only browsed it years ago and don't own a copy. Islamic and Christian Spain in the Early Middle Ages is ok, but very dry, and not a narrative history per se. There certainly must be better histories of this fascinating period out there.

As for Greene, I don't know your politics, but The Quiet American, set at the earliest beginning of U.S. involvement in Vietnam is a great read - a suspenseful examination of human frailty and betrayal (as is often the case with Greene). I have an LT review of it if you care to know more. The End of the Affair and The Heart of the Matter are also classic, but for me the Catholic subtext would be insufferable in any writer other than Greene. Really, you can hardly go wrong with him.

Sorry it's taken so long for me to respond.
I am honoured to be included in your list of interesting libraries, and proud to be known as one of your friends on Library Thing.

Good to hear from another bibliophile. I can tell from our shared books that you have excellent taste. I also like your scheme of tagging by century, although I imagine I would mess that up pretty quickly (and I don't have the energy to go back and re-tag). Anyway, I look forward to browsing your medieval collection.

Maki
I think our copy of "Chronicle of the Third Crusade: A Translation of the Itinerarium Peregrinorum Et Gesta Regis Ricardi" came from a used book seller via bookfinder.com, but I see that it's available on Amazon now too. I'm personally much fonder of Ambroise's "L'Estoire de la guerre sainte" (the translation we have is "The Crusade of Richard Lion-Heart"), but that's harder to find.
Thanks! I envy your medieval and crusades collection, and have gotten a number of new ideas myself. :)
Hey Russell,

Thanks for adding me to your interesting libraries. What kind of holes are you looking to fill? I might be OK to ask that on Western Europe from about 300-700 CE/AD but beyond that I have tons of holes of my own to fill - Late Antique Persia, Medieval period Islam, Eastern Europe, Ottonian Germany. The list goes on and on and on ...
The bilinguals (Latin/German) I bought in the 80's but I think they're still readily available. The Teubner (Latin only) editions from the 30's I enherited from my father. But you can occasionally still find these as well in used bookstores here in Holland.
