About meI'm an English major and devourer of books. I love to give and receive recommendations, so please feel free to contact me.
About my libraryI like young adult novels, general fiction, anything on Judaism, and the classics. I'm currently trying to expand my library with more POC and/or post-colonial authors. I also have an interest in feminism, biology, crafting, and black holes.
This here is only a portion of the books I've read - this site is so impossibly addictive.
A note:
My reviews are based on the concept of recommendations. So I avoid plot summary, instead analyzing the weakness and strengths of the book, covering topics that the potential reader would want to be aware of. Sometimes this dissolves into a rant or worship; it's all very subjective.
So are my stars. I give them not on the objective quality of the book, but my experience in reading it. I thus might rate something considered canon low, while praising a fun murder mystery.
0 stars - I haven't finished reading it yet.
1/2 star - these are reserved for books I really hate. So far only the Twilight series have won that honor.
1 star - this is a book I did not like, by style AND topic.
2 stars - this is a book I did not like, for style OR topic.
3 stars - this was a book I liked, but would probably not reread.
4 stars - this was a book I loved, and would reread.
5 stars - this was a book I loved, would reread and recommend to all.
Sometimes, though, I give a high rating to a book that is important but not pleasurable to read (like Loomba) or a low rating to a book considered important that I just find terrible on racist/sexist/ect-ist grounds (like Conrad).
Ratings will also vary over a series, because I compare them to one another. The insistence of pleasure over importance (a nebulous rating anyway) means that a YA novel may reach the same score as an adult one, but within its own "YA-ness".
Hmm. By all that I mean this system is incredibly subjective, and reading my review or emailing me will probably give you a better understanding of the book and my views on it.
In a review, I try to always recommend another book to pair the experience with, for similarity in taste or as an important contrast.
