About meThe Fischer-Hanlon House Library is owned by the California Department of Parks and Recreation in association with Benicia State Parks Association, formally Benicia State Parks Volunteer Interpretive Association (BSPVIA).

About my library
• The core collection of the Library was donated to California State Parks in 1995 by Park volunteer and educator, Carolyn Quandt. Over her many years of involvement in the Historic Park, Mrs. Quandt brought in approximately 300 books to be used by volunteers and staff in researching history, furnishings, clothing, cooking and many other areas of historic interest that would add to the accurate interpretation of the House and the time period.

• According to the Deed of Gift for the core collection, Mrs. Quandt stamped Property of BSPVIA in some of the books so that borrowers would know where to return them. In July of 1995 Mrs. Quandt chose to donate all the books to the Fischer-Hanlon House (a unit of Benicia Capitol State Historic Park) as the Catherine Hanlon Memorial Library. The Deed of Gift on file with California State Parks does not list the titles individually. Over the years additional material has been added by Staff and Park Volunteers; these additional items have not been accounted for individually.

• Benicia Capitol State Historic Park opened to the public in 1958. The restored Capitol Building served as California’s third seat of government (1853-1854). The interior rooms are recreated with period and reproduction furnishings. The Fischer Hanlon House next door, home to three generations of an early Benicia family was acquired by California State Parks in 1968. Interpretation and furnishings of the home focus on middle-class family life circa 1880-1900.

• The Benicia State Parks Association is a non-profit organization established in the 1980’s to promote interpretation, preservation, conservation and education activities of the Benicia Capitol State Historic Park and the Benicia State Recreation Area.

• The Benicia State Parks Association supports activities in the State Parks through donations, book sales and fund raising and community events as well as providing volunteer tour guides, garden volunteers and curatorial assistants to assist with the preservation of the museum collections.

• The Library is located in a small room off the Parlor in the historic Fischer-Hanlon House. Access is by advanced appointment only when Park volunteer or Staff person is available to accommodate visitor into House.

• There is limited time and space for extended research but many of the books are available for borrowing through a library sign out system.

• For more information or an appointment for access please contact the Benicia State Park Volunteer Coordinator at 707-745-0367 or info@bspa1853.org
