About meBook Wish Foundation is a nonprofit organization providing financial and material support for reading-related programs targeting people in crisis around the world. Through partnerships with organizations that work on the ground in distressed places, we deliver reading relief that can improve education, mental health, and occupational training.
Reading relief is a concept much broader than providing books. It encompasses all of the aid for community institutions and individuals that makes reading possible. This includes, for example, support for libraries, schools, informal literacy and language programs, and vision care. To provide relief, this aid must match the specific needs that exist, which vary according to the crisis situation, culture, language, demographics, educational history, and aspirations of the people being served. These needs form the basis of the Wish Lists on our website, and provide an opportunity for highly targeted giving.
Our current project focuses on three Darfur refugee camps in eastern Chad and 18 nearby Chadian villages, and includes reading relief in the form of library construction, secondary school textbooks, Headway English language course material, dictionaries, reading glasses, solar CD players, and school supplies.
About my libraryBooks tagged "wish list" appear on a Wish List for one of our projects, meaning that they have been specifically requested by the people who will receive them and/or facilitating NGOs familiar with the recipients' needs. Please check www.bookwish.org to learn more about our specific needs and to donate. In some cases, we have agreements with publishers giving us significant discounts, leveraging your donations. Not all Wish List books are shown here (e.g., we do not list the approximately 5000 books that will comprise each library will build in the Darfur refugee camps).
