OK, you asked, so here is a short potpurri: Virgina Woolf, An Inner Life by Julia Briggs, new to me and I am currently reading; "Europe Central" by Wm T. Vollman, a major epcoch, very high on my list; A Writer At War, Antony Beevor; Dika Newlin's "Bruckner, Mahler, Schoenberg; The Life and Legend of Leadbelly, by Wolfe and Lornell; The Rest is Noise, by Alex Ross; Sarah Waters, "Fingersmith," ( and a couple of others); "Betraying Spinoza," by Rebecca Goldstein;"Chloe Plus Olivia," anthology of lesbian lit 17th c to present, Lillian Federman, ed; Arthur Schnitzler's, "Night Games and other stories. (Don't forget my handy "Websters" which my late daughter suggested that I would not skip over words I didn't know, :-) I must add "Marlene Dietrich" by her daughter, Maria Riva, a great read on many levels. I omit some shelves of erotica and mystery-detective books and more. The above might give you (and others) some taste.

After listening too a couple of versions of Mozart's flute quartet # 3 (Love Mozart!) I went to a potporri I have created from downloading from Rhapsody, "my new best friend," :-)

Never found Britten, but love his conducting of Mozart Pn Con (ECO) with Clifford Curzon, although Uchida-Hart are my number 1 on this group.

Delius is an ugh. He should thank the gods for Beecham. Love Barbirolli.

I too have a copy of The Erotic Professor. It appears to be of the same edition as yours. I have been seeking a larger hardcover ed. which I think was published circa 1932.

Hi. Thanks Clifford. Yes, I enjoy living in South Australia. After I married, 17 years ago, I considered the option of moving to France, and examined the pros and cons, and concluded that here was the better place. My wife is happy here in her new country. I have produced a little booklet since last I wrote to you, and it sold well when my wife had her art exhibition. She sold 8 pictures and the booklets went well, and I have half a dozen copies left over. We made a small profit on the booklet, and the pictures put money in Marie-Claire's purse. Now I am working on another book. It's good to keep busy. Keep in contact. Cheers Glen

Hi Clifford.. I found the "Register of Erotic Books" on the Internet but was unable, at the time of discovery, to download it properly. What I got wasn't formatted properly, and it was a difficult task to put it in proper order. As I have it in hard copy on the shelf there'a no real urgency about it.

Ashbee is in three volumes and is massive. I don't know what a paperback would be like. There are paperback copies of Ashbee under different titles in abebooks. It seems hard to believe that what is being offered is the same as what I have, especially in view of the fact that the booksellers are offering them for very low prices. Copies similar to mine are on the list. One bookseller had a photo of the set he had in stock and I was able to identify it from that and the description as being the same as my set. He wants ove $600
Peter Fryer is good. His book "Private Case, Public scandal certainly exposed the British Museum. There was some correspondence about the BM's "Private Case" in the correspondence columns of the Times Literary Supplement at the time when his book was published.
Talking of banned books and pornography, in Australia we had a secret list which was kept by the Customs Dept. The Ministers for Customs one and all refused to publish the list. The only thing they would consent to was to answer "Yes" or "No" to anybody who wrote about a particular title. The list remained secret until the 1960s when somebody leaked it to "The Bulletin," a current affairs weekly. This list included only titles considered to be of "literary" interest.

I have not posted much of my erotica on Library Thing yet and I can't say when I will be posting the details.

Thanks for your kind comment on "Trousers Down." It was my first attempt at imaginative writing, and was written to post on the Internet to give Yahoo Groups members an idea of how they might write their CP stories. Some very bad stories were being published. My story was posted, and remained for a couple weeks, then it disappeared, with no explanation. I put it on two or three more Yahoo Groups where it was appropriate, and the same thing happened. An American publisher of erotica sent me an email asking for permission to publish it, but he wanted changes made to make it politically acceptable. I turned him down. Since then I have written another story, but I have never published it.

Hi again. I forgot to say in my last that I have another W. H. Allen "Star" book which is entitled "More Eveline." The is sub-titled "or, The Adventures of a Young Lady of Quality Who Was Never Found Out," otherwise entitled "The Modern Eveline" This is not in Rose. The book has a bibliographical Foreword (pp.v-xiv). Sorry I forgot to mention this. Sorry, too, that I did not correct my spelling errors.

Thanks for your reply. I, too, have copies of "Eveline" and "Flossie," though neither is catalogued on LT at this stage. Both titles are in the W. H. Allen "Star" series, and both are listed by Alfred Rose in his "Register of Erotic Books" He lists "Eveline" in three different editions (Nos. 1637, 1638 and 1639) The first of these he describes as..."EVELINE, OR THE AMOURS AND ADVENTURES OF A LADY OF FASHION," Written by herself. 2 vols., 6 colured lithographs, pp.105 + 85 in all, 12 mo. Charles Roberts, Wardour St., London, c.1840. Rose adds that this is listed by Ashbee in "Catena..." at pp.141-144. However, referring to Ashbee I find the reference should be to pp,142-144. Do you have a copy of Ashbee?
The other two editions of "Eveline" listed by Rose he dates at 1843 and 1860
The W. H. Allen "Star" book has a Preface which they say has been taken from a 1904 Paris edition. It has some interesting bibliographical details. Do you have the "Star" edition. I believe it may have also been issued by Grove Press.

The title "Flossie" is, as I have said, also listed by Rose. He has two editions (Nos. 1768 and 1769), both with descriptions of interest. Ashbee, who died in 1900, had no opportunity to list this book, and the "Star" series edition offers no bibliographical information.
My copy of "The Good Ship Venus" has the same ISBN number as yours and therefore must be identical. I bought my copy at Shakespeare and Co. in Paris and it has the "Shakespeare and Company" stamp on the title-page. It certainly has no connection whatsoever with "Eveline" or "Flossie."
As you are a collector of flagellatory erotica you should have in your collection a copy of my story "Trousers Down." It appeared for a short time on the Internet, and maybe you had a chance to get a copy for yourself?

Hi Clifford. I notice that you have a copy of "Venus Bound," by John de St. Jorre. I would like to know if you are willing to give me a few details about this book.
The reason I ask is that I hesitate to buy this book because I already have a copy of"The Good Ship Venus" by John de St. Jorre and I suspect that "Venus Bound" might be the same book with a different title. I would appreciate your help.

I haven't had a great deal of time to have a thorough trawl through yours... what it does tell me is that there are so many more titles out there I wish to add to my shelves!

As I may have said in the past, access to titles is something that restricts my collection.. Let's face it, this is country that had Lady Chatterley's Lover on the banned list for years!

Older "historic" material has so far eluded me... but then I am but a youngster when it comes to collecting books. My library has reflected what I have bought to read... it is yet to expand into reflecting what I have "collected".

Hi Clifford,

The new Collections feature does make organising things a little easier but I have elected not to duplicate my full library here - I use Booxter as my main cataloguing tool.

I know I can import the full list quite easily, but I have chosen to keep them separate as explained in my original post.

I am fascinated by the depth of your collection - I would expect that you have far greater and easier access to a wider range of material, especially the older books, than I would have here in Australia.

As for the blog... well, that's a whole other story and I can't imagine you would find it of all that much interest.

It would be greatif you have a list and I can go through the list. Unfortunatly it is for me very difficult to buy, the new zealand dollar is half the value as the euro. So for me everything is double so expensive. But still... maybe you have nice books and looking forward to your list :)

It's a pitty that you're not into bdsm, you are missing a lot of fun and beautiful, enjoyable erotic.

Collecting since 1960's, ahum I wasn't born at that stage.:) But hopefully get the change more often. But here in New Zealand we have a problem that books are not so popular as over in Europe. You don't have as much second hand shops and maybe 1 or 2 times a year a book fancy. And unfortunatly bdsm and books about erotic is really a bit not done here.

I'm preparing a Wikipedia entry on Colleton, including brief synopses. I have found an excellent summary of his work, in the superb 'Encyclopedia of Erotic Literature' of Brulotte and Phillips, by Joseph Slade III, Colleton being one of the very few modern authors honoured by this inclusion in what is a very scholarly (and expensive) work. Slade hints that the 'triangle of lovers' depicted in the novels is based on Marks' private life, and that the other women he depicted drew heavily on his interviews with Audrey Hepburn, Sophia Loren, Gypsy Rose Lee, Jayne Mansfield, Kim Novak, and Mae West. We can only speculate how much of the 'action' is simply wishful thinking!

Yes, it is sad that there isn't more info on some of these authors. I usually try to impart some kind of biographical info when I review them. But it's extremely hard to find that kind of info, especially on some of the older works.

I have acquired the 'Alice' trilogy, and now I'm interested in the John Colleton books. What is the chronological order of this series? Would you mind listing them in order?

Speaking of Dedeaux, do you have any information on him or his works? I can find nothing on the internet about him, not even the first publication date of his books. There are 5 or 6 listed on Amazon and I've always wondered if there are more out there that are out of print.

Recognition? I had no idea his name was not John Colleton. Even when his books were popular I found no evidence of interest in the author himself. The books, if I recall correctly, got a few reviews but no discussion of the author.

I am sorry I can be of no great help. It has been quite a while since I read any of the books.
